  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have a 09 tech package and would like to get the most out of the audio in the car.
My current home library is mostly .flac files that I have ripped from my cd's
I know that the Lexicon system won't play .flac but will it play some other type of lossless media ?

I'm trying to figure that out myself. I put a WAV file on a thumb drive and it was not recognized. I'm going to keep at it though...

No can do. DVD-A, CD and MP3's only. Pretty sure.

Yeah, I may end up spending time figuring out what DTS formats it will play off a DVD. I do believe it plays DTS-CDs.

Thought the OP meant Audio sources... yes, music DVD's (non DVD-A) also play... though I haven't tried any yet. I'd be curious to hear some feedback on those ;)

Yeah, my comments were definitely starting to stay from the topic, sorry about that. I'm personally interested in how to play high-quality (if not lossless) 5.1 audio from sources other than an original DVD-Audio disc.

It also plays WMAs, but I'm not sure if that buys us anything in terms of quality.

From page 20 of the Genesis DIS (Tech) User Manual:

The Driver Information System is a high-end multimedia system supporting the following:
FM, AM and HD Radio and XM Satellite radio reception.

DVD changer supporting up to six discs of the type audio CD, DVD audio, DVD video, VCD, MP3 files on CD or DVD, and WMA files on CD or DVD External connection supporting USB with MP3 or WMA files, iPod® mobile digital device and audio or video AUX connection via a mini jack.

I have played home made audio DVD's in the DVD player but do not own any DVD-A discs so haven't tried that. Also have not tried playing WAV files on the flash drive (USB stick).

It apparently has two antenna systems as well: "Roof antenna (GPS and XM® Radio reception) and an integrated glass antenna (FM/AM reception) offers superb reception quality.

I was hoping that someone might have had success with apple lossless files or something of that nature for audio only media :(

Nope sorry:o The only real option to play Apple lossless type files would be to use your iPod/Phone's analog headphone output to the aux. mini-jack input. Obviously that's an extra step of DAC which pretty much negates the benefits of the lossless format.

All my songs are 320kbps MP3 encoded with LAME. It ain't lossless but, honestly I can't tell the difference.

This. v0 LAME is pretty dang close to lossless in MP3 format, would need dog ears to tell the difference:D

LAME is just an MP3 encoder. I hadn't messed with V0 before but so far it sounds great. Apparently most can't tell the difference between V0 and 320kbps MP3s, but V0 files are smaller as they vary bitrate according to the complexity of the audio; 320kbps MP3s are a constant bitrate.

At any rate, FLAC is lossless but MP3 is lossy. So convert FLAC files to V0 MP3 (or 320kbps MP3) but don't change an existing MP3 to V0; the information lost when going from CD/FLAC to MP3 cannot be recovered by changing to a higher-bitrate MP3. Make sense?

FWIW I use dBPowerAmp CD Ripper/Music Converter; I haven't used winlame. I just ripped a bunch of CDs to FLAC for archive purposes, and then made V0 MP3s from the FLAC files to take with me in the Genesis.

I'm also going to be experimenting (one of these days) with creating DVDs containing DTS 96/24 audio. It's lossy but should sound better than, say, Dolby Digital.

This also.

Was it a licensing issue with Apple (to play iTune files) or is just a feature 'not activated' in the firmware in the sound system?

This is interesting information here..... don't know how I've missed this thread. I've got a lot of learning to do about ripping music, in particular how to get the best sound quality out of my iTunes music to play on my thumb drive.

Not sure how to go about it.... but, I'm all ears if anyone cares to break it down so a layman can understand conversion of files to get the best sound quality.

I know how to copy files to a flash drive.... very elementary even for this old geezer! LOL @ me.

Is there software that will convert .flac or mp3 to lame ?

Lame IS mp3. WINAMP Pro has a format converter that will convert FLAC, MP3, MPEG-4 AAC, Ogg, WMA, WAV formats to one another. I use it frequently to convert my FLAC files to MP3 for the 64GB USB drive that I use in my 2013 R-Spec.

It really depends on the quality of your playback system.

On my reference system at home I can easily tell the difference between the MP3 of any bit rate and the original lossless version. The better the initial recording the easier it is to tell.

That does not mean that MP3 is inherently bad. It serves a purpose (although less so now then 10 years ago).

Cheers
