  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Window tinting question

I just had my windows tinted yesterday. I had a custom shop that was recommended by the dealer salesman do the work. He did a great job although it had to be NC compliant so it isn't too dark. I had the ceramic coating done. As I understand it, the coating needs to cure for 3 days. I was told not too lower and raise the windows for 3 days.

My question is; after picking up the car, the am radio reception is not sharp. The FM works fine and the phone is fine, but the couple of talk radio stations I listen to on am are getting a lot of static. Has anyone had a problem with tinting messing up the radio reception?

Ceramic tint is specifically designed to not interfere with radio signals. Make sure you actually got ceramic tint and not metallic tint. Coincidently I had mine done yesterday as well. My guy used ceramic LLumar CTX35 film. I don't notice any difference in radio signal strength.

It looks darker in the back because the window shades are up.

Did you use the AM radio before the tint job? The AM reception on the Genesis is not all that great to begin with. However, as noted by Boston, a true ceramic tint should not interfere with radio signals, but a metallic tint will. Try and find out the exact tint film manufacturer and tint film model used (each company makes several types of tint film, and each in various VLT%).

As a mild tangent to this, I was told by a salesperson that the Genesis has a UV coating on the glass and offers 90 percent UV protection. Not sure how valid it is because he was a salesperson, but it was after the sale so it's not like he had anything to gain at that point (and seemed to know what he was talking about about some other things). It was new info to me so I thought I'd point it out, and it is somewhat related to the tint discussion.

I would not be surprised about that. Most eyeglasses (the clear plastic kind) have 99% UV protection. But that does not give much solar energy rejection or solar heat rejection.

Point taken and I agree. Besides, I feel like I'm in a fishbowl driving around with no tint.

I contacted the shop that did the coating. He said that it takes a few days for the film to "cure" and that in this weather there could be some moisture while it cures. He said once it has cured that the reception would be the same as before. I have no idea if this is correct. I guess I will know in a couple of days. It is true that am reception wasn't great before but the stations I listen to (mostly sports talk) had good reception. I did verify that it is a ceramic tint but forgot which brand and film. I will check into that.

Moisture degrading the signal? Think about it, does your radio work in the rain? That's total BS.

There is no verification that tint you received is a ceramic unless you get a brand and film name. All you can say at this point is that you verified that the installer said it was a ceramic.

If possible, once you get the film brand and name the installer claims to have used, I would find another installer who can give you a small sample piece of film to make sure it is the same.

Excellent advice. I would go so far as to ask to see the roll of tint. Ceramic tint is expensive, my installer took out the roll and showed it to me to make sure it was what I wanted. I also got warranty documentation with the exact film name and what % it is. Did you?

Tell them you need the manufacturer, model description and roll number of the film used, along with a warranty card so you can submit it to the manufacturer for warranty registration. If they say "your warranty is through us", just tell them if you move out of your current location, you would prefer to have the warranty registered with the manufacturer.

Thanks for the input. I will contact them to get specific warranty information. I appreciate the good advice!

Let us know how it works out.
