  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

A rock hit my windshield and the resulting cracks were easily 36" from left to right. No repair possible on this one! The insurance company dispatched the glass repair company today and the job was completed in about an hour.
I was first told that my wait time was 2 to 4 weeks as the glass wasn't available locally (had to be shipped in from Korea) and aftermarket glass is simply not available (good!). Someone must have located a genuine Hyundai windshield locally as they called me back in just a couple of days with the news that they they had the new glass.
Here's the astounding part. The cost of the windshield is listed on the invoice as $1867.31. Labor was another $164. with another $47.07 in misc stuff.
Total after tax was $2,.236.32. Happily for me I'm out only my $50 deductible. I say all of this to say, beware the cost of this beast of a piece of glass.

Yes. My business partner has a 2014 Equus Ultimate. He had to change windshield due to rock crack. The replacement cost was over $3,000 and only Hyundai factory part was available. Was told it has to do with all of the sensors and cameras and head up display.

My 2014 S550 windshield was "only" $1800 total to replace.

Everything is just much more technical and much more expensive nowadays.

The cost is not that unusual. In 1986 I had a Mercury Sable LS with a heated windshield and the replacement cost was just over $1300.00 in 1986. BTW when the installers where installing it in they cracked it and had to get another.

I too had to replace my 2015 Genesis windshield and the cost was $1850. My contribution was the $300 deductible and it is a Hyundai OEM part.

Would be insurance. Warranty would only apply if the crack was a result of a defective windshield, not something foreign cracking it.

Reading about some of the prices others of you all have paid makes me realize that the cost of mine certainly wasn't as bad as it could have been. Guess I need to get out more!

That's the problem with embedding all that electronic stuff into the windshield. First it was just the rain sensing wipers, but now it apparently includes "sensors, cameras, and heads up display."

The HUD is not in the windshield, it simply reflects off it.

Do they make some mod the windshield that reflects the HUD better than a regular windshield?

I doubt it - as stated, the HUD just refects onto the windshield. There are aftermarket add-on HUD's, so I doubt the glass is anything "special"... But the HUD Is awesome and once you have it, you hate driving cars without it.

I was thinking that some windshields reflect better than others, but I don't really know. I could see that they have to make sure there is not a double-image for reflections on laminated glass.

Also, I saw someone post that some car-makers have HUD that is not affected by polarized sun glasses (most are adversely affected by it). Not sure if that is because of the windshield.

But the HUD Is awesome and once you have it, you hate [being] without it.
That's what they also say about heroin.

Regarding the HUD and the windshield, both the insurance company rep and the glass installer asked me to confirm that I had HUD. Presumably the insurance company person to make certain the correct glass was paid for and the installer to make certain that he was installing the correct glass.
This is well beyond my area of expertise, just reporting my conversations with the professionals who were involved with the replacement.

HUD vehicles absolutely have unique windshields. They use a layer inside the glass to improve the reflection of the image as well as to avoid glare and distortion. All vehicles with HUD use this special layer inside the glass.
