Windshields do crack/break from rocks thrown by cars and especially construction trucks.

Insurance companies (mine is USAA) are loath to replace glass with the very expensive OEM official Hyundai glass. Aftermarket windshield glass is of very good quality and much cheaper. USAA uses Safelite, a national company to do the replacements.

Safelite tech examined my windshield and determined that the windshields offered by Safelite do not have the sensors of my OEM windshield; and, further nothing in Safelite's vast inventory will fit. So.....Safelite will order an OEM windshield directly from Hyundai, at insurance company's expense. This will cause some delay, so this is just a warning that you too will experience such a complication.

Finally, there is a plastic cover surrounding the inside rear view mirror. It is very difficult to remove without breaking a special mounting tab located on right side of cover. This tab is weird in that it appears to have no means for dismount. Safelite will obtain a new cover.

I just had my windshield replaced, It took a week for the dealer to do it. And that was after my Equus had been there 7 weeks for an engine knock on startup

Has anyone tried to get Hyundai to replace the windshield under warranty? My windshield looks terrible just from normal daily driving. Have heard that their windshields are softer than others.

Its not softness of glass. Pits in windshields are caused by weather, road materials and the amount of debris thrown into the air from wind and other vehicles and also speed of your vehicle.

If they are softer, that is a feature, not a manufacturing defect, so unlikely to be covered by a warranty. But I have no information on how hard they are compared to other windshields.

Update on windshield. Safelite did replace mine with an OEM windshield. Hyundai logo info on lower left of new windshield is slightly different. Everything fit. Safelite part # is "MISCFCW". Total invoice cost was $248.14, which is very reasonable compared to dealers' pricing.

Compared to older vehicles driving on the same roads in the same condiitions for significantly more miles, the amount of pits/wear/damage is way worse on the Genesis. I feel the glass quality is not as good as other brands but do I have proof, no. Can only go on what my eyes are telling me.

Do you have automatic wipers on your Genesis?

Asked if I have "automatic wipers" on my '14 Signature. I guess the answer is "yes" in that I have "rain sensors". A provision for rain sensor was not included in the first non-oem windshield that Safelite provided.

I opted for "home installation" with Safelite because I wanted to be able to engage the installer and ask questions. If you have the windshield installed at Safelite's shops you will never see the installer.

I did ask the installer if he thought Hyundai windshields were "soft". He replied no knowledge that Hyundai's glass is any different. I suspect he is correct. It may well be that the aerodynamics of Hyundai direct more road debris to windshields. Whatever, I think that windshields "wear out" over time. Cars driven only in cities will not experience such wear, but highway driving does expose one to increased wear.

I once lived in a cold climate where they didn't use salt on the streets in the winter when it snowed, only sand. This was to keep cars from rusting out.

Often the sand had some pebbles or small rocks mixed in it. This played havoc on windshields, and most had to be replaced about every 3-4 years on average. Sometimes a big rock would cause a crack that had to replaced even sooner.

Yes I had a windshield replaced under warranty when I had a Genesis. Not because of pitting due to pebbles etc. hitting the windshield but because the rain sensor did not work with the existing windshield.

Pitting etc. is not a reason for a warranty replacement it generalyl must be a mechanical issue.

At 47K miles, couldn't stand the pitting of the windshield, especially when driving towards the sunrise/set.
Safelite replaced with a non OEM, laminated solar glass for $345 total, no insurance help.
Everything functions fine on the car, no front camera recalibration needed.

Do your automatic wipers work (turn on when it starts raining?).

yes they do, first thing I tested.

Glass says Pilkington Solar in the corner.

My 2013 Gen 1 windshield needs replacement (stone bruise). It has lane departure and rain sensing wipers, both sensors are located in the windshield. Cash deal, Safelite quoted $585.95.
Hyundai's auto glass is no different than any other auto and if they are not chipped/cracked from rock debris are subject to sandblasting from road conditions and debris over time.

Bought this car used and owned now for just a few months . Took clear glass for granted, never had a vehicle as pitted as this one. Did the deal in the evening of course so I didn't really notice at sale time.

I've had full size work trucks with 200K miles of mostly highway and better glass than this Equus! New glass is amazing :)

To Doug, I thought the sensors were window related too only to discover from the Safelite tech that they're roof mounted and of course hidden by the big plastic cover above the rear view mirror. He said he never had to contact any of that while replacing the glass. All auto controls work including the LDWS.

For what it's worth, German cars are notorious for soft glass. The three German cars I've owned (1 of each make) each had to have its windshield replaced at low miles due to pitting or chipping. By contrast, I've never had to have a windshield in an American or Japanese car replaced for anything but an identifiable road hazard.

I can't argue with that but part of it may be related to local conditions. My Mercedes SL and Passat both have 175K on them and still have original windshields, a little sandblasted but still serviceable while my Ford F250 has 100K and the original windshield needs replacement from sandblasting. I'm in California and the Ford 4x4 gets all the winter mountain driving with slush, sand etc while the other 2 are fair weather cars.

That's good info, thanks. I have LDW and Rain sensing wipers and really need to find a reasonable replacement cost for a windshield.
I'm guessing that the reason that they are expensive is no after market makes them because of low demand as comparatively there are hardly any Genesii out there.

first thing I did was replace glass - when I got it at 30,000 miles- the person who owned it b4 me used terrible windshield wipers and etched glass with them- and the glass was full of tiny sand hole pock marks I couldnt stand it- went through insurance- got OEM Hyundai glass replacement on 2014 Equus - they (glass place) said the lane departure sensors etc made it propriotery and no after market glass was a match - it was expensive and took about 4 days since the glass guys had to send it to dealer to align sensors ? I dont know. It was intense and not simple. Anyway, now with 73K miles on it I see more pock marks from sand- and it is starting to be bothersome. I may replace again at 100K. Love the car. Was thinking glass seemed softer as well than my S430 or my Audi A6 or my BMW 3 Series i owned b4.... who knows. Maybe...
