  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Wireless CarPlay?!?!?!

Already placed my order. Thanks again for the recommendation and taking the time to snap some photos! Still interested in your experience with it thus far. In the meantime, I'll continue dreaming of the day I can just leave my phone in my pocket.

Shut up and take my money.

Seriously though -- that sort of quality mount with lightening cable already integrated is exactly what I'm looking for. Alright, so from what I can tell this is what you've got in your photo:
  1. Holder: Adjustable iPhone X Holder for Lightning to USB Cable (iPhone X in my case)
  2. Mount: ProClip Console Mount
Is that about right? Pricey, but I'm picky so that would work perfectly for me. Questions: Does the mount leave any evidence of its existence at all if you were to uninstall it? e.g. is there any visible wear/damage on the leather/plastic anywhere? Also -- does it intrude on the passengers space at all? It doesn't seem to but just wanted to confirm what your experience has been.

that's the same setup I use, same part numbers. you use your own lighting cable, it clips into the mount.

yes pricey, but FWIW, the phone holder works for multiple iPhone models, I've actually had this one since I had an iphone6, it's adjustable with or without case, and with thin and thick cases, mine has seen a 6/7/7plus/8plus and thin cases through otter boxes, and shorty will have an XS max as I am due for an upgrade this month (company pays for it so yay, freebie for me). since it is a 2 part system it can be moved from car to car, mine has gone through a Camaro, Lexus RCF, and now the G80, of course you have to replace the car mount. but that's half the price going forward.

does it intrude: no intrusion for the passenger, it does block the upper cup holder a bit, normal sized cups fit, supersized or larger coffee tumblers will bump against the phone, while they still fit, the cup will likely be touching the phone if not pushing the mount outward and if you rotate the phone horizontal, then it rests across that cup holder so no cup will fit. That is my only complaint about this setup for this car, I've never had that issue in other cars.

visible damage: no it clips onto the console. I will say this however, with the larger phone (currently a 8plus) I noticed it did start to vibrate while driving, I remedied this by using some 3m double sided tape on the top lip and the bottom of the car mount where it connects to the console, this keeps it from moving and vibrating, and while I don't believe the 3m will leave any residue, but keep that in mind if you opt to secure it the way I did.

having used pro-clips in many cars since the early 2000s, they have never left any marks or damage, they are deigned to clip between the dash parts with minimal intrusion and no removal of parts, they literally take 30 seconds to install on most cars.

Great, thanks for the advice and the extra info! I’m looking forward to getting mine and setting it up this week. No more fumbling around to get into CarPlay.

p.s. For what it’s worth, I found a very interesting article that outlines the initial handshake: How Does Wireless Apple CarPlay Work? - Connected Car Life

  1. To initialize the connection the phone uses Bluetooth to send a signal to the head unit requesting to connect.
  2. Once the Bluetooth connection is made the phone will request wireless credentials to the Wi-Fi access point.
  3. Upon confirmation the head unit will send the wireless credentials to the iPhone, which will cause the phone to search and join the Wi-Fi access point.
  4. After the Wi-Fi connection has been established, the Bluetooth signal will disconnect and all audio and video will be transferred over Wi-Fi.
  5. And now you’re set, you now can use CarPlay wirelessly.

Also, I’ve been reading around that folks have had some trouble getting it to work well (see comment section too)

I have that same mount setup. There is nothing better!

Please help me understand this. In my 2018 G80 Sport, a wireless charger is located directly next to a USB hub and audio jack. This USB hub is the only port that connects your iPhone for CarPlay.

Why isn’t wireless CarPlay an option? What good is a wireless charger if your phone is plugged in for CarPlay and charges simultaneously? You can’t close the sliding compartment if the USB cable is outside the dedicated area, you must leave it inside we’re it lays against the wireless charger with 3 feet of wire stuffed next to it. WTF
You can by short cords ....but agreed there is no reason not to have wireless android auto. They say there is too much info over the air for bluetooth to carry it all fast enough.

Perhaps the wireless charger is to be used when not using android auto/carplay....or when you just need a quick charge and dont have a cord.

I don’t have wireless CarPlay (just wired in my Civic) but from some reviews I’ve seen of wireless CarPlay in recent BMWs there’s an annoying lag between audio and video if someone’s trying to watch a video while listening to the audio through CarPlay. If just for music then not a problem obviously.

I also prefer the quality and increased stability of a wired connection for audio.

Does the ProClip really only work with the original Apple Lightening Cable, or can it be used with any lightening cable?
Thanks.

Based on how tight the fit is between the cable and the base of the ProClip, you're better off getting an original lightening cable as they instruct. The reason is because it's intended to be as secure as possible so that you can just slide the phone in and not have to worry about the cable moving around. That way they can predict the exact size of the cable tip, so they based it on the original cable.

However, if you're looking to save a buck, you can try an alternative, but unfortunately you risk potentially losing or damaging not only the original cable but also the ProClip itself.

EDIT: p.s. It looks like you can get some original/OEM Apple cables on eBay for roughly $9, so hopefully it's not a big deal :)

Most aftermarket cables are too fat to fit in the pro clip, using them will break the locking tab

I've been doing my research on the G80 as a potential purchase, and actually called Genesis support for this. The rep seemed a bit out of his depth and cautious, but did say that there will be no firmware/software updates to the 2018 models, just updates to the maps and nav only.

I'd be disappointed as hell if I pick up a G80 and would need to upgrade the entire car for wireless carplay.
The 2018 G80 will do Apple Car Play now. Just use a ~6" USB cord to the Wireless Pad area to your phone and select Apple Car Play on the Home Screen. I gave it a try to verify it works but find Bluetooth more usable.

P.S. Your pix reminds me of grade school - WOW 80 years ago is a long time!

I had the same question. First of all I was told that CarPlay is not capable of wireless communication. It takes too much band width to be done wirelessly. Is that true? I assume the person who told me was right.

Secondly, I assume engineers felt it a good idea to have the option to wirelessly charge if you didn't want to "plug in" to CarPlay.

In my opinion the G80 would be "perfect" if it had wireless CarPlay and a way to lower all windows by holding the unlock button on the key fob like all Toyota products can do. BTW....I bought a 1 ft cable to help with being able to close the door as the phone is connected to CarPlay.

The person that told you this was wrong. BMW offers wireless CarPlay, for example, and has done so for a few years now.

Anyone heard if this was coming to the Genesis lineup?

Kinda of a crappy picture because it’s night. But you get the idea. click thumbnail to enlarge image

phone slides in and you go less than 2 seconds to deal with plugging it in. once it is attached even if the car is off, it connects to carplay, so once you start the car, the nag times out after 30ish seconds, and it flips to carplay.

if you put the car in reverse the camera will activate during the bootup and you won't ever notice the lag from the boot cycle.

Does this mount cut into the passenger space at all. It doesn't appear to. Thanks,

not unless the passenger seat is all the way forward, and in that case you likely have other issues..

no it doesn't interfere.

as has been stated, unless Hyundai/Genesis offers 4G hotspot service for the cars, you won't get wireless carplay, and if they do expect wireless carplay to be a pay for use service like it is with BMW and MBZ.

in order for wireless carplay to work the radio and the phone have to be on the same wireless network, not on a cellular or bluetooth network.

4G hotspots in vehicles have never taken off, the data plans are very expensive, 30-40 times a phone data plan with limited data allowances.

I think it would be great if these car manufacturers allow us to use our own hotspot for wireless carplay, I have unlimited data with mine, the car is capable of connecting to a wi-fi network for Hyundai specific apps, but it doesn't have the programming to allow carplay to access that part of the system, and it wouldn't take much to open that up.

then you put the car and the phone onto your hotspot and you have wireless carplay.. or course then you have to keep the hotspot plugged in and charged.

Is a 6 inch cable long enough?

I did buy this and installed it in my G80. It is pretty handy but it does get in the way if you have a large size cup in the larger cup holder. You do have to use the original Apple lighting cable. An off brand won’t fit. They are all too big to snap into the slot made for it.
