  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Wow, Genesis gets a lot of eyes!

I come out of a store to find a guy looking over my 2012 4.6 with badges. He asks, "Is this an Aston Martin?". I replied, "No, it's a Hyundai." "What's it cost?" "About $45,000 but you can get it for less." He looks at me with shock in his eyes and says very loudly, "YOU PAID $45,000 FOR A HYUNDAI? YOU COULD'VE GOTTEN A BMW FOR CRYIN' OUT LOUD".

Perceptions are hard to change. Sometimes they never change.
Hyundai appears to have chosen the long slow road, but at least they've been moving in the right direction for a number of years.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
yes, if you say you paid 45k, there are a lot of people who will give you that response.
but if you pay about 36k like many of us on this forum, then it's not so bad because at that price, some people buy loaded minivans or pick up trucks. with the genesis, you get a very nice luxury car.

Well, he didn't ask what I paid did he? He asked what it cost. It's meant to be a light-hearted anecdote...not cause for a lecture or an intimation that I paid to much. Fact is I paid less and I alluded to that in my reply to him. Certainly could've paid 36K for a 2011 but didn't want that.

I calmly pointed out that just a moment ago he thought it was an Aston Martin and that $45,000 would certainly get him a BMW but probably nowhere near as well appointed with a 10 year warranty.

He turned and walked away without another word. That's LA for you.

Back in my L.A. days, I was pleasantly surprised when someone complimented me on my new Saab 9000, which had just been introduced. Living in a city where even high-end BMWs and Mercedes were commonplace, it was an unusual occurrence. But nobody ever asked what I paid...

But nobody ever asked what I paid...

Good point. It is interesting to me that people would point blank ask a stranger something that I consider a gauche question. Especially considering the information is freely available. Like Glashub I would respond to this question with the MSRP range.

These type of people are badge-wh*res and idiots when it comes to cars.

They're the same type of people who are more impressed (pricewise) from someone driving an E39 5 Series - even if that person bought it for under $15k than someone driving a new loaded Honda Odyssey which goes for over $40K.

I get mostly "Is that a Bentley" comments because of the emblems. It sure is fun to watch guys stare and discuss the car.

The way I respond to price inquiries is to say that the car cost about $20K less than a comparably equipped BMW or Mercedes. I usually say something along the lines of "I do in fact like the BMW more, but not $20K more."

It puts the conversation onto an appropriate footing; instead of focusing on a price point that would've been unthinkable for a Hyundai a few years ago, it focuses on the fact that I got a screaming great deal on a car compared to the European alternatives.

lol! ya many people just don't get it.
what the guy failed to realize, is that a comparable bmw ( the 5 series 550, loaded w/ options) would run approx 30k more, w/ less than half the warranty. a no brainer to me

but ya, i had a neighbor react in a similar fasion when i told her it was a hyundai that runs 39-44k.

i told her that she needs to understand that hyundai has come along ways w/ respect to making reliable good looking quality cars that now compete w/ the big boys (honda, toyota, gmc, etc). and whereas toyota, honda, gmc and other car makers changed their name for their luxory lines- ie toyota to lexus, honda to accura, gmc to cadillac, nissan to infinity etc- hyundai did the same by offing a luxory line, but decided to retain it's name.

either way, hyundais' luxury lines compete w/ most of all the other luxory cars out there and imo beat the competition w/ the incredible value pricing.

There's a simple reason why Hyundai didn't go the Toyota-Lexus, Nissan-Infiniti route. They want the quality imagery of Genesis to rub off on their lower priced vehicles which account for the bulk of Hyundai sales. In advertising, we call this the "halo effect."

What's not fun is when you pull up next to a real bentley and feel like crap!!!! Any other car I feel good pulling up to cuz i know my car is a good car for less, but when a bentley pulls up next to me (it's happened twice) i feel like hiding cuz i know the owner is looking at me like that's not a bentley, this is a bentley, lol

I'm starting to agree that not all attention is good, especially when walking to your car at night or some sort, I always think someone is going to try and high jack me (especially since I am tiny lol) and not only that, I live where I haven't seen any other 2012 genesis yet, and better yet not even many 2009-2011. So it can get kind of scary at times lol. I upgraded from a 2006 Lancer ES to this so it's a huge upgrade.

I just feel that someone jealous will throw something at the windows or something since it seems more "unseen" so it gets a lot more attention.

And that actually happened to me the second day I got the vehicle but I didn't feel like crap :P

At my age I don't give a hoot what anybody else drives. Bentley, Yugo, it just doesn't matter. Neither makes me feel one way or the other...

Yes, this car definitely can attract some positive attention!

I have been asked the Bently question many times as well, and one more knowledgeable gentleman actually new it was a "Korean" car when he question me about it at a gas station. He said it looked way better in person and that Hyundai is doing a great job.

I can also tell you, this car is capable of garnering negative attention as well (generally from jealous doucebags). One day whilst filling up at my neighborhood 7/11 two older teens (maybe early twenties) were mumbling to me that they should kick in my f***king windshield as they walked past me. I didn't even make eye contact with these gents, but they didn't like the Genesis very much I guess.

Also, today I obviously either p*ssed somebody off (I would be oblivious to this) or was a victim of jealousy again, because when I returned to my car from my breakfast out this morning, my friend pointed out that a liquid (hopefully not bodily) was "spilled" all down the passenger side. Later, when I was washing it off, I noticed it had been keyed as well on the rear quarter panel.

Needless to say, I am furious and don't believe anybody deserves this for simply driving a particular type of car.

So I've had my 2012 Black Genesis w/ Premium for almost a month and I've never seen a car get as much attention on the road and gas stations then the Genesis.

I was pumping gas the other day and a guy came to me admiring the car and taking a video of the whole outside of the car. On the highway I get so many looks when passing by. It's crazy how much attention it gets similar to Lamborghini and etc. BMW doesn't get this much attention that's for sure.
Same with driving through out the streets.

I love it though, makes me feel "VIP" especially since I'm only 21 driving a car like this lol.

PS: I have the badges installed in the front and back as well which gives it even more of a luxury look in my opinion.

Ditto Even in a military town here (Ft. Huachuca is adjacent to Sierra Vista, AZ) that is literally overflowing with Beemers and Mercedes and Infiniti and Lexus cars...and with as many government employees as there are here (a LOT), my month-old 2012 Pearl White, prem/tech (and rebadged) Genesis gets lots of looks (having moved up from a Black 2006 Sonata, I can say with assurance I will never, ever, EVER have another BLACK car - just not worth the time and effort to keep clean, especially here in AZ, as well as being HOT ). At night, the LED 'eyebrows' definitely make it look very different than the other lux-class cars on the road. ON at least two occasions at night when I park and get out, I've people ask me if I did the headlight 'mods' myself (to get that glowing "evil eyebrow" look)..they were amazed when I told them it just "came with the car"... :)

I just took a trip from the Seattle area to Rochester, NY and back in my 2010 Genesis Sedan 4.6 Tech. This car is MADE for trips like that! On the Interstate cars would pass me with passengers giving my car a long staring look see. In Iowa I had a guy walk up to me asking if it was a Maserati! In upstate NY I had just parked my car at a grocery store and before I got out a young couple walked in front of my car and I could hear her say "what kind of car is that?!". The guy said "I don't know but I want one of those one of these days!". I felt pretty good about that. I had taken the trunk badge off and I can't tell you how many times at gas stations, parking lots, etc people would ask what kind of car I had.
On the other hand is the performance - this car without a doubt has all the power you need. There are times on the freeways when you need that extra power to put real estate between you and other drivers that are not paying attention or are allegedly drunk, or for whatever reason. During my 7,000 mile journey I got to know my Genesis very well. I feel it is a part of me when I am behind the wheel. On top of that I got 26-28 MPG doing 80 MPH! It only has 8,500 miles on it right now but I am looking forward to putting MANY more on it!

Where in Seattle are you? You can PM if you want to. Im in the south end. Would like to get together with other Genesis owners in the area. Maybe start a car club.

I went out to dinner last night and for some crazy reason I hit every red light. I got soooooo many looks that I almost felt uncomfortable. One guy kept looking and pointing and finally gave me a thumbs up as we drove off. Another guy in a pickup truck which was a few cars back on my right was yelling and screaming at me to lower my window so he could talk. I'm thinking that dude was drunk. Any way it's been like a movie star ride for me. Ahhhhh that damn paparazzi. Lol.

I was just in Seattle on business. I must say that the RSpec must really stand out among all those Subaru's and Volvo's!
