Navigation system software update

M&Soft says a new map update is coming out in late January. Details to come out later. So they do infact resell Genesis map updates.

Just an update to the problem I've been having. I turned on my car and the audio was not working, so I drove directly to the dealership. Service Rep acknowledged (finally!) the problem and got the tech to come out and also acknowledge the problem. I also showed them the TSB and the version of the software my car had. It seems that their computers incorrectly had it stated that the update had already been applied. Regardless, they ran the update this morning, so we'll see if it actually fixes my problem. According to the tech, Hyundai stated that my problem (audio issues) should be fixed by the update, but we'll see.

On the way to the dealership, I also had a second issue - halfway there (about a 30 minute drive), the DIS restarted (rebooted), showing the accept screen again. It happened a second time in front of the tech. I don't know if this is all centered around the same issue, but since it's the DIS "computer", and an update has just been applied, maybe it will go away.

While I haven't had much time to notice improvements, I did find out that it fixed another issue with the voice recognition. My brother's name is Jesse (pronounced Jess-E, not just Jess) and I had two numbers in the phone book - Jesse Work and Jesse Cell. If I said "Call Jesse Work", it would call Jesse Cell. If I said "Call Jess Work", it would call the correct number. When the DIS voice confirms the command, it pronounces Jesse as Jess and still does but now it correctly understands "Call Jesse Work". Perhaps the algorithms have been tweaked?

Regardless, outside of all the data entry, I'm happy at least that the voice recognition works a little better. Whether or not my other issues are fixed is unknown until it happens again - or never happens again.

BTW - By the time the tech drove the car around to run the update, the sound started working again. Luckily it stayed broken until he came out, otherwise they would have still thought me crazy!

Personally, I'm still very frustrated that the entire Hyundai organization has been unwilling to divulge the change list for TSB-63 (compounded by the fact that all owner-loaded data is trashed as a byproduct of the firmware update). My most recent attempt to ferret out this information was a note to the HMA Think Tank moderators, which garnered this reply:

We sent your request to get more information around the TSB-63 update to our engineers and hopefully this will help clear things up.

The TSB-63 update will contain new operating software for UTA (Universal Tuner and Amplifier) and new map data. Unfortunately with this update the owner-loaded data will be erased. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you and other owners.

Let us know if you have any other questions.

Thanks,
Janet

Hyundai Think Tank Moderator

I'll pass on whatever info I can get from HMA on this (although apparently I'm the only owner on this site who finds the situation untenable...that is, agreeing to an undefined update/fix that also requires me to reload my phonebook, nav addresses, etc.).

PS to BayWayRic et. al.: taking HMA's response at face value, there IS some sort of map update embedded in TSB-63 (as well as the new audio/UTA software). Has anyone that had TSB-63 perfomed on their car noticed any changes/updates to the nav system maps?

Hmmm...not sure if that is the update I got this past friday but if it was, my phone book and stored information did NOT go anywhere. Took about an hour and I hung out in the bay and became friends with all the mechanics...:)

yep, the THINK TANK thing stinks. I wont waste any more of my time on that.

HA!! At least you recieved a reply to your messages...I have not had one yet.

As noted elsewhere, Campaign 63 takes over an hour of "run" time to install, not counting taking the car to the bay, setup, etc. And it definitely wipes your saved data if done correctly. :(

I had the update done and I have a V8 so it is definately a range of VINS. Also I had two issues one was that Bluetooth was not working at all, and another was that I was having a hissing noise that lasted for a second every once in a while coming from the audio. No matter what the source. They replaced the Audio unit due to the malfunctioning Bluetooth. Then they also installed the update on the new Audio unit after they put it in. This fixed both the bluetooth and hissing noise I was hearing. So, it appears that some of the audio units might have some issues. The replacement cost for the unit would have been around 3900 dollars looking at the bill they had for the unit itself. So I am glad that it happened from the beginning.

Also the one item I did notice, and maybe it was there before and I did not see it. After the update the external temp was shown in the map navigation display in the lower left corner of the screen. And unless I did not notice it before the switch and update I do not believe that was there.

It's there:cool:

Also, your point on the audio is the best reason to focus on the 3yr/36,000 warranty for this stuff. If you're keeping the car, get an extended!

I received this e-mail from the Think Tank moderators over the weekend, describing what's embedded in TSB-63. It's still not as explicit as I'd like, but it's more detail than I've seen so far.

Note their expectation that a software update of this type -- one that deletes all owner-loaded data, that is -- is not expected in the future, and that routine nav/map updates won't have this effect. While the latter may be true, I seriously doubt the veracity of the former. In fact, Hyundai SHOULD plan on making additional firmware upgrades down the road...why not avail themselves of opportunties to improve the functionality of the car via low-cost code updates?

Unfortunately, I'm still in a quandary regarding TSB-63, as I'm not having any troubles with the issues they're addressing, and I'm still cranky about having to manually reload my phonebook, so for now, I'm gonna continue to ignore the little red postcards that my dealer keeps sending me about this TSB. Perhaps HMA will have a few more revelations about code-based fixes such that I can bundle at least two updates into one reload session at a future date.

We apologize for any confusion. We spoke with our engineers and got a
little more information around the release. The S/W update has been
released to address (1) critical functional issue (complete system reset)
with the head unit, improve XM tuner performance, and increase map data
density and correlation to the head unit S/W. The most relevant of these
updates for most customers is the map data correlation to head unit S/W.
There are some unique usage scenarios where the map data can be handled
incorrectly by the head unit, resulting in the system re-booting.

Our official position is that this new S/W greatly improves the stability of
the system and should be applied as soon as possible. Further, we do not
expect to release any further operating S/W updates, only map updates which
will not delete previously entered/stored information.

We fully agree with your comment regarding a provision to preserve existing
data while updating system software. We are working on a strategy for
future models, but at this time, the H/W and S/W infrastructure of the
current system will not support this option.

Please let us know if you have any further questions. Thanks.

Had my initial 3500 mile oil change and check up today [all OK] and decided to let them do the T-63 DIS upgrade. UGH! It was our dealer's first one and it took them 3hrs+. Based on Musher's comments, I think this will at least fix the random erasure of the NAVI address book. The bad news is not only does it wipe out the phone book and address book, it wipes all the presets for AM / FM / HD & XM.

My 3500 is coming up in January. I'm saving up things like the fuel door release... the T-63... So... you're telling me instead of a general physical, I'll be getting a prostate exam. Hummmmmm.

I'm not encouraged about their comment that no S/W updates will be coming, only map updates. Hyundai... if you're watching this forum.... I'm willing to PAY for S/W enhancements!!! Open a developer's API. License a developer's SDK! Let us that do sofware enhance the DIS. Hey- they do it with cell phones!

I didn't say that! I said, bend over and grab yo' ankles.:D

Ya right! Like a programmer saying, "trust me boss, this is a flawless piece of code." I find marketing in CA is way behind this car, especially relative to the folks on this board. As others have noted, this is a very easy system to add functionality to. Like viewing .jpg files. I think we will see some goodies down the road, because it is cheap and it will build lots of good will. Having the embedded system will allow it to be pretty stable and thus hopefully preclude anymore T-63 type updates which I think are more OS related than APP related. Easy for them to tweak iPod support, add .jpg support, a backup/restore function, etc. I bet you couldn't find 2 people at HQ who could articulate the value of backup/restore to their customers. They're car people, not computer people. They need our help!

Bozzaj,
I'm having the same intermittent speaker problem as well. Does the update still appear to fix the problem?

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
Had mine done today when it took it in for the first Oil Change and inspection. Update took 3+hours, thank gawd I work right across the street, I just left it with them all day.

I can confrim that it wipes all Radio/XM/etc presets and NAV points. Doesnt wipe the Phone Pairing oddly enough. All and all I can't really tell any difference, the NAV seems a little more peppy maybe???
Still can't shuffle IPOD playlists and my Bluetooth connection dropped about every 90 sec before, now about every 10 minutes. Not prefect but MUCH better.

I am still Totally in Love with this car. 4000+ miles now and it STILL has the new car smell. Love it.
The only thing that I have to say is that it absoultley is the WORST car I have ever had for Winter Driving. If there is any ICE/SNOW/Heavy Frost you will absolutley slip with stock tires. Its the worst winter driving car EVER! Lucky I have another car and 4X4 truck, otherwise I would be serioulsy pissed at having to buy winter tires (which btw Pirelli Winter Carving tires are AWESOME studable too for those states that still allow them).

Bozzaj,

Andy

Well, yes and no. Since having the update applied early December, I've lost sound 3 times. This is a big difference from losing it every other day. Also, previously, if I lost sound in the middle of the day, I'd be lucky to get it back until the next day. Now, each time I've lost sound, turning the car off and leaving it alone for 5 minutes fixed the problem. With only 3 times I don't have all that much data, but I'm working with the dealer to try and track down the problem.

So, it may fix your problem completely or mostly, or perhaps not at all! How's that for a definitive answer? :)

What exactly does this fix? My vehicle has about 1,000 miles on it now... XM Radio was static and cutting in and out yesterday... It would fix itself for a little while if I shut it off and on again... I have the V8, what gives? Just bad reception?

See post #48 above for a description of TSB-63 from the HMA Think Tank crowd.

3587;

I just made this post on another thread, sounds like maybe XM is having an issue, maybe?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Not exactly the same problem but this morning when I pulled out of the garage my XM came on to a station I have never listened to. When I tried to change it back it only cycled through 3 stations all 600 series. I turned it to FM. Later in the day I tried XM again and it came on to my old station! Maybe poor sat coverage but strange that it would jump to 600+ stations. Not sure what happened (Gremlins?) but its OK now. Picked up the car mid December.

I had my first oil change and "recall" done today. I only have 2100 miles, but the dealer insisted on it being done within the first three months. Sure, they want my money, but since it only cost $20, what's the big deal, right? But it turned out to be a big deal with the "recall". After 2 hours, no free coffee, the service rep came out to tell me I "Failed" the recall!!! WHAT!? Says, they have to replace my radio! I have never had any problems with it, the nav, bluetooth, nothing! I don't understand. The rep said that if the "Update" would not go thru, then that means they have to replace my radio. So they are ordering me a radio and will call me when it gets in, about 3 days.
So I leave, confused. I feel, if its not broke, don't fix it. Rep said according to Hyundai criteria, it is broke! Maybe something electrical, but he was not sure. He also said the update would not wipe out anything! The failed update wiped out EVERYTHING. And now I am having problems with the radio like I have never had before. Phone seems to be delayed, radio and cd just cut off! Has anyone else "Failed" the update or recall? (whatever they are calling it!)

Nope not yet. Maybe Mapnsoft will sell it. Mapnsoft.com sounds like an ultra small start up company. They use Navteq for the map database.
