  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Steering Wheel Vibration

So what do all the "who said s" have to say on the subject now?

One interesting implication from that link is to not get your tires rebalanced on a very cold day, especially if your car sits in the parking lot for awhile waiting your turn to get serviced. The reason is that the tire balancing process will not be done correctly if there is even a temporary flat spot on the tire.

I saw that and its the reason that Years ago when I worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. We told our store managers and service managers to drive cars a mile or two on cooler days before doing a re-balance.

Well, the dealer is going to get me a new set of Michelin Primacy MXV4 tires. Tire manufacturer is paying for 2 and Hyundai 2. General Mgr spoke to the Hyundai Regional Rep and they were willing to do this for me, which is pretty awesome. Tires are on order so hopefully I can get an update later this week.

I do not think it is the tires, flatspots are a thing of the past.

As someone who used to work in a tire shop, you're wrong. In fact, the only brands that were made to high enough standards to not have balancing problems or be out of round on a notable basis were Michelin and Bridgestone. Nitto, Goodyear, and Sumitomo were the worst in my experience.

Small irregularities tended to work themselves out in a few dozen/hundred miles. Buf if it was something you really noticed, the tires was defective to the point of needing replacement.

Steering wheel shaking is usually tire balancing issues. Did you have the dealer rebalance. Hyundai also has a Tom for what specific type of balancing machine the dealers should be using. Even though they are replacing the tires, ask the dealer what type of balancing machine they have.

Funny the rep actually mentioned their balancing machine. They upgraded recently per Hyundai so that they were in line with their expectations. Didn't specify what type of machine, but he mentioned that it was brand new.

Yes, I am sure that the new dealer balancing machine is in mint condition (and the Hyundai dealer tech employees have very little experience using it). Sounds like the dealer was forced to purchase the machine by Hyundai Motor America, and would not have done so on their own.

I would rather have my tires balanced at a tire shop where the techs balance tires all day long, and where they work for a shop with outstanding customer service so they will balance the tires over again until it is done right.

Well, got the car back today with the Michelins installed and the issue is 100% better. No visible movement in the steering wheel at all now up hill or while letting off the gas. So, yes the symptoms appear to have originated from the sh*tty Dunlops that flatspotted after sitting on the lot for approximately 2.5 months. Will keep you in the loop as far as the tire's performance.
