  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

GPS Update

Wow! What a sad story Retry. I was prepared to shell out the money for the update but I think I'll just buy a Garmin instead. Save a few bucks and have a better GPS.

I test drove the Chrysler 300 before I bought the Genny and they use the Garmin system. It had the same screens that I'm familiar with on my portable Garmin. I wish I had asked how the updates worked and what was the cost. The Garmin appears to be much more advanced. Don't get me wrong, I'm very happy with my Genny but the Navagation system is a sore spot.

Retry - As to finding the TSB related to the GPS update: I logged on to the service site, filtered the search based on Genesis sedan 2012, clicked on TSB and clicked on Body Electrical System. A got a list that included the TSBs for the update; 12-BE-016 and 017. FYI, I tried to upload the TSBs in PDF form to the forum, but the file size was too large.

Thank you...

My October 2012 v5 navi update continues to be a sore spot. So far I've discovered the "North Up" map orientation no longer exists as well as the option to choose either the shortest or quickest route. Today I called Map-n-Soft to ask why these features were deleted and the guy never even understood what I was talking about and said he had no way to check out these types of issues. In other words, they have NO technical support. He referred me to Hyundai Customer Assistance. I called them and the lady promptly called Map-n-Soft back and got the same run-around. While I had her on the line, I asked her to log me down as another complaint as to the cost of the update. Even though the dealer covered it, I saw the $265 bill. I told her I would never pay that and couldn't understand why anyone else would, especially to end up with fewer features. She said they already had lots of the same complaint. BTW, does anyone out there with v5 have the two features I'm missing?

UPDATE: I still have no UPDATE, nor have I received my promised $75 gift card from the Genesis Customer Care center - guess I'll have to call them AGAIN.

This whole substandard GPS/GPS Update issue is such a sore point with me. I talked with my service writer earlier today (after having my brake fluid replaced) and he was reticent about updating the GPS...he remarked that of the DIS equipped cars where he applied the updated GPS for warranty issues ( since apparently no one comes and pays to have this done) that most have crashed during the procedure and what was thought to be a four hour procedure turned into at least a day and required calls to Mapnsoft to complete. His attitude was that the update was more trouble than it's value and should I want to have this update applied I should call Mapnsoft to acquire the required software before returning to the service center.

Do you folks think Hyundai monitors this forum? They have to be very aware of this issue...but the official response is far, far from good. Quantum you have been more than patient. Great advertisement for Hyundai...Genesis cruising the highways with a Garmin hanging from the window.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!

Not corporate, no. We always asked the same thing over on NissanClub. Same answer.

Individual dealers will sometimes, but rarely ever corporate.

Interesting, this is quite a bit different from my days a Mustang Cobra owner. SVT definitely monitored the larger Mustang forum sites back then (www.corral.net in particular). Even in the early days of the 3rd Gen Acura TL, I remember someone identifying themselves an a Acura engineer responsible for the interior plastics, and he/she was requesting feedback on how we felt about the design (I looked for the thread but couldn't find it).

I finally found the missing features I thought were deleted from my v.5 update. The North Up and whatever you call that other map orientation are only accessible as soon as you choose a new destination then can't be toggled between the two without choosing another destination. I don't remember it being that way in the previous version. The other missing feature was the choosing of either the shortest route or the shortest time. These options appear to only be accessible through voice commands now. Anyone else out there with the v.5 update experiencing this? One last note about the update; I read in the TSB where the phone book, phone pairing and maybe some other stuff would be wiped out by the update. This did not happen. In fact, the volume of the ringer in the car works properly now. It was so loud it would strike panic in my passengers and even though I could turn it down while it was ringing, the next call would revert back to full throttle again. Glad that's fixed.

Yesterday, I take my Gennie to the dealer to fix my latest problem with the NAV. Of course, it works fine when I show it to him. But he takes it anyway. They keep the car all day just to tell me that an intermittent problem like this requires a new head unit. Note this is a replacement unit.

I tell him to go ahead. But if the new one comes with the original software, I do not want the upgrade applied. It's not reliable, and I have lost the ability to mute the turn by turn voice.

Wait till he hears that I want my $ back for the upgrade.
The latest. Malfunctions with the upgrade on the new head unit have not reappeared. Dealer says that Hyundai will not provide yet another new head unit, but will pay to reinstall the update on this one.

Since it ain't broken any more, I tell him not to fix it. Leave well enough alone.

How does one get a manual for the update? I got nothing more than new software.

I wish I knew. Hyundai is totally bungling the entire NAV update process and I'm STILL waiting for my 'coupon'. Originally it was for $75. I was told I'd get more cause I've been waiting. That was the beginning of March. I assume when i call again I'll get another bump in compensation.

I am looking at buying a Genesis or Equus. First, though, I need to find someone who knows how to customize the factory GPS navi and Bluelink. Is there anyone out there that can do this?

What do u mean by customize? Can you give some examples?

I wrote to Hyundai to complain about both the cost of and long periods between updates of the Navigation maps. The response from Hyundai: "the digital NAV map upgrades are elective and are the sole responsibility of the owner". Well jeez I new that but what about the high cost and the absence of updates for almost 2 years AND the reticence about updating the maps from my service writer? The service writer said that the few vehicles updated (for warranty issues) crashed during the process and that if my Navi was working I should probably leave good enough alone. Hyundai's reply: "we regret that you are dissatisfied with your vehicle and we will log your complaint". Isn't Mapnsoft owned by Hyundai? Hyundai distances itself from the mapping company (a couple of guys in a store front office?) and pretty much says that it's up to the map provider and they (Hyundai) have little, if any, hand in producing the maps. Oh yeah, I was asked by my service writer to please call Mapnsoft if I really wanted to go through with the update to make sure they (the Hyundai service center) had the correct software before I returned!

So much like the official silence on the "mute at start up" audio issue we will get no satisfaction from Hyundai when it comes to our Nav units.

I think (and this is simply a guess) that with the ready availability of cheap, good and frequently updated (and for free) portable GPS units (let alone the ubiquitous smart phones) Hyundai sees no profit in this area and has simply decided to pay us owners no attention. OK just something else to remember next time I car shop or when someone asks me about the vehicle.

Truth is if our maps were updated sooner and just a third cheaper (a neat $200) I would update yearly without issue...I just like the idea of this 8 inch built in screen equipped with the latest maps and not having to hang an appliance from the dash.

I'm trying Hyundai! I'm really trying!

they will pay no mention UNTIL somebody gets their attention with a lawsuit. Hell, if they'd just let Garmin or somebody take it over.....

I have a 2013 Genesis 5.0 with Premium package and after I got the car I bought a tomtom the next week. The GPS in the car is nice in terms of position accuracy but a POS in its database. New roads (10 years or younger) are not there. Try to search for a subway or McDonalds near you, it will find one few 100 miles away.

Now I use Waze app on the Iphone and looking for a mounting option on the screen, there is a good after market for holders on that can be placed on the screen to hold hand held GPS...

the defective iphone map is way better than the one that comes with this vehicle.

I just called the Genesis Customer Support center again, and was told that they are still having problems from the vendor they use for their coupons.

I would STRONGLY urge those of you who are unsettled about this entire mismanaged navigation update process and product to CALL and make your concerns known. I told them again a few min ago that I should not have to use a $150 to get better GPS results than what's in my $45,000 car. LET THEM KNOW your displeasure. Please!

I've registered my complaint.
