If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Changed the oil today. Had to remove about 10 screws from the front and aft covers under the engine to gain access to filter. Hyundai should design an access panel under filter area. Anyway, used Mobil 1 5w-20 (had great luck with this oil on 2003 Honda Accord v-6, 170,000 miles when traded) and genuine Hyundai filter. Changed oil at 2600 miles. So far so good, no leaks noticed.;)

Regarding covers, I have thought the same thing about my two Mercedes. There must be some reason not to have access panels other than saving money.

Considering where you live and the issues with 5.0 oil consumption, why didn't you choose 5w-30 Mobil 1?

I'll see how it goes with 5w-20 first. I assume the factory fill was 5w-20 and there was no noted loss in the first 2600 miles. Obviously different engine but never had any loss on Honda.

I have the same issue with having to remove the underside cover on my 2012 3.8. I attribute it to the fact that the filter was previously accessible from the top under the hood, and they didn't feel it was necessary to modify the underside cover when they moved the filter to the bottom.

I suspect that because the oil filter housing is plastic, they don't want anyone to leave an access panel open where road debris, rocks, etc could hit it.

4.6 v8 filter was always on bottom and the v6 has used the same cover as v8.

Would a 0w20 oil work well in the 3.8 V6?

Why would you want to change from the manufacturers specifications?
There are no 0W-20 conventional motor oils available, and Hyundai does not specify that a synthetic is required, which is why they don't specify 0W-20. 0W-20 Full Synthetic can be used as the equivalent of a 5W-20 conventional.

But instead, I would recommend 0W-30 or 5W-30 Full Synthetic for longer engine life, at a very slight decrease in MPG. Mobil 1 0W-30 Advanced Fuel Economy would be a good choice if you are specifically concerned about MPG.

The better lubrication to valve seals and rings of a 5w-30 oil (compared to a 5w-20 oil) might also minimize wear at those locations and prevent oil consumption down the road a bit. Especially if the 5w-30 oil is synthetic while the 5w-20 is dino.

It's a Genesis, large engine -> if your looking for MPG go buy a Prius..
I sincerely doubt that any of us will have the vehicle @ 100k let alone 200k
So why all the chat" about use this oil or that oil...

I am not big on a preference of one major brand over another. But I do believe that full synthetic oil is beneficial, and worth the minor increase in cost (at least for those who do their own oil changes).

I would say that at a minimum, some forum members have noticed benefits in reducing engine noise, and reducing oil consumption (5.0 V8 only). My experience with using synthetic in previous cars over the last 20 years is that synthetic oil can reap benefits in engine reliability. But it is up to each person to decide. My guess is that people who lease are less inclined to worry about it.

As a side note, my Hyundai dealer uses synthetic blend for all oil changes, even though Hyundai only requires conventional oil. A few others have reported the same for their dealers.

As for still having the Genesis @100k miles, there are some on this forum that have already surpassed that.

I purchased my 2011 Genesis 4.6 with tech in Sept. 2010. I Now have 98600+miles on it and will pass 100k in two weeks. I keep cars until about 250k miles; therefore, motor oil, transmission fluid, diff. oil is very important to me as it is to others that drive cars for many years and miles. So you are wrong about not having the vehicle @ 100k let alone 200K. The car my Genesis replaced was a 2005 Acura I purchased new and kept it for 239,000 miles. So don't assume that everyone waste their money on a new car every two or three years. Also I did not buy the Genesis for mpg, I bought it for the power of the V8.

I drive very little now that I'm retired, however, I just prefer synthetic oil. I can usually go 9 mos to a year between oil changes.

I didn't necessarily buy the Genesis for the V8, but, I did buy it to get rid of the terrible riding/driving Azera (2008) I traded in on the Genesis. HUGE difference :)

I think some people just have an appreciation for the soul of a machine, and want to keep them in excellent working condition, even for the benefit of subsequent owners. I think it is mostly a guy thing.

I dont understand the statement of not having the car around 100k +. If Toyotas, Hondas and Nissans can make it to 200K+ why cant the G?

I dont think most will have issues with the engine on the G but if anything most other things will crumble around it and mainly the electronics that are stuffed in this car.

I like to do my own oil changes for mine and my immediate family's cars. If I convert my time to money then yes it is costing me more than doing it at a shop by I have the time to do the little things right: draining, flushing, torquing, better oil & filter etc.

Synthetic costs more but the Castrol Titanium Edge and Mobile One Extended are good oils that i'd like to use.

I have used a w20 weight oil in a car that asked for w30 and felt like that the cars engine was always dragging and it felt like it was always under load.

Manufactures will generally recommend items and it does not mean that you cannot use other oils and cause any harm.

PS. Many of the cars that I own are around $150k btw and I have been servicing them for years now and havent had any engine issues (knock on wood).
