  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Oil Consumption in '12 R-Spec

After running Mobil 1 (5w 30) for 1200 miles, I brought it to the dealer and it's down 1.5 quarts
They are now conducting an oil consumption test. They did contact Hyundai and they said it was in the "normal" range, which we all know is a crock. If it's normal, then why aren't all of the engines doing it??? Even my service manager didn't buy into it.

I just took a 1100 mile road trip this weekend and will check the level shortly. They put in conventional oil this time.

I just checked the level after my 1100 mile trip and it's still full. I guess the engine likes the highway.

Let's see what happens now that I'm back to my normal driving routine.

They should use synthetic. When a dealer switches to conventional, they have been told something. And they should use 5-20 like all other auto companies. And was stated as the oil to use anyway...

A Hyundai service manager once told me:- that once you use Full synthetic
you should NOT go back to using regular oil..!!!!

Another urban myth.

And so it begins, I have 4495 mi (900mi from last oil change) on 2012 5.0 nonRspec. Took it to dealer for overnite storage and they will check it tomorrow morning. My dipstick is measuring exactly 1/2 way from top to bottom marks.

(That's roughly 1 quart every 1800mi at his rate of burn. Or 2 quarts every 3600mi) Anyways, I'll have them do the brake fluid recall while I'm at it. [Don't get me started with surround sound checkbox issue or miles-remaining-in-gas-tank guage]

*But on top of this oil shortage problem, do any other 5.0 owners have a car starting up issue too? Car is not starting on first try, turns briefly for 1 sec and then quits* I'm thinking this is a symptom of low oil.

If it is not coding out (electrical), then have the fuel filter and fuel pump checked.

I have read the entire thread, and believe this problem is occurring in 5.0 Genesis engines, whether R-Spec or not. Is that correct? Is it also happening in the Equus 5.0 engines?

Was looking at a 2014 Equus today and the sales manager said that Hyundai had to replace the engine of an Equus there for excessive oil consumption.

So at what mileage did you first start noticing oil loss?
I'm at ~2200 miles and it's still at the full mark with the original oil.

I've noticed that the engines are doing it seemingly right from production. Just advise you to keep watching it. 5W-30 seems to help out a lot.

I am soon to purchase a 2013 Genesis R-Spec. Has anyone had these oil consumption issues with the 2013 Genesis R-Spec.

The same type of reports so far, others have said. Not too many 2013 folks reporting their experiences as I have seen.

Mine is a 2013 and it sounds like maybe it's not as big an issue in that model year

Check the production date in the drivers door jamb. I don't think anyone on this forum knows if and when a production line change was made to address this issue, but probably the later the production date the better. Of course, engines are built separately (and prior to) date of car production as listed in the door jamb.

2013 Here and I have no consumption problems. I do use full synthetic though

I dumped the OEM oil at 1800 miles and put in Mobil 1 5w-30. Dipstick still at full at 5700 miles.

If Hyundai made any changes to the internals of the engine (i.e., piston ring design), it will be difficult to notice unless you compare part numbers between the years.

I drive a 2013 R-spec and use Mobil1 5w-20; I have never noticed any oil consumption. I do all of my own oil changes and change it every 5,000 miles.

Yeah some engines are hit and miss with this problem.

Does anyone have a solution to the supposed oil ring burned in issue. I have the same issue with my Rspec 2012. I bought the car with 5800 miles on it and it burns about 1/2 quart every 1000 miles or so. I bought it through CarMax and have extended warranty. Can I direct them to perform the oil consumption test and rely on them for this type of issue?
