  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Read this review of the S550. A car with an as tested price of $99,000. It's a very nice car but what caught my eye was the "Why you wouldn't" buy this car section. The answer? "You are checking out that new Hyundai Genesis that your neighbor, Phil, just parked in his driveway down the block." Not bad for a car that is about $50,000 less. Now that is a compliment to the Genesis if I ever seen one.

I agree. The Gen does not compete with the E class Lexus or Mercedes it competes with the L and S classes.

Tufast: Thanks for posting the article. This just confirms my decision to turn in my 2006 BMW 530I for the Genesis w/Tech.Pckg and have never looked back!

Welcome to the club. Here's another former BMW owner who defected to the lowly Hyundai brand.

The BMW (2004 325i, in my case) gave me bragging rights and superb cornering. Now, the Genesis gives me almost-as-good cornering, plus superior ride, superior ergonomics, lower fuel costs, and better electronics. And I am hoping for better reliability too, and if the BMW electric woes and the good reliability ratings of the current Hyundais are of any indication, my hopes will most likely be reality.

Great article. Thank you for posting it up! And yes, the Genesis only competes with the Lexus GS and Mercedes E-Class in price - otherwise, it's the Lexus LS and Mercedes S-Class...

I replaced my 2007 Mercedes S550 with a Genesis V-6. It was on lease and I bought the Genesis. The Mercedes is a much better ride and much faster but I took photos of both next to each other and they look very much a like.
Of course the sticker on the Mercedes was $108,000 and $42,000 on the Genesis. You do the math !!!! Much better value for the money on the Genesis !! Plus I still get more looks at my Genesis than I ever got in my Mercedes !!

It's tough to say what cars the Genesis really competes with. It competes w/ some cars in terms of price and others in terms of size. FWIW, the S Class and LS460L/600hL are significantly bigger than the Genesis. In fact, the S Class is ever so slightly bigger than the upcoming Equus, which itself is a huge car. The Genesis is about the size of the short wheelbase 7 and LS. With the exception of width, the new E Class is actually quite close in size to the Genesis, and is one of the bigger midsize luxury sedans on the market, along with the M35/45 & A6.

Have you tried replacing the tires yet? I'm incredibly anxious to replace the OEM Dunlops. All I know is that my ride improved when I switched to snow tires in the winter (something I did not expect because snow tires don't tend to be very good for handling/ride quality). Who knows how much the ride might be improved by switching to something like higher-rated, such as these Bridgestones: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Bridgestone&tireModel=Turanza+Serenity

I'm sure even w/ the best tires the ride won't be as quiet and polished as the S Class, but at $40k, it doesn't need to be. As you said, incredible amount of car for the money. :)

Well I can officially say that I know of someone who traded in a Mercedes S550 for a Genesis! Too cool. :)

Actually, comparably equipped, the Genesis competes more with the C Class MB on price. The Genesis is a very nice vehicle and I think it has a "visual presence" that is "S Class." But when you really start looking at the details and materials in the S Class it is a very easy to determine which one is the more costly vehicle. Lets face it, $50,000 additional dollars does buy something. Now, to me, it is just not worth the extra cost.

My parent's friends did the exact same thing. They went from a leased S550 to a leased 4.6. That's how I saw the car for the first time, I didn't know it existed. I was set on a M35 or GS350. After I drove the 4.6, I was hooked. 15 grand less you say? SOLD!
