  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

My genesis is a door ding magnet

I agree with all the tips, but it's just easier to park farther away from the idiots and take two spaces off-angle. That's what I do 99.99% of the time, both to save the headache and because my Coupe doors are pretty long, themselves, so I don't want to ding someone else. A few extra steps won't hurt us, either.

I know of some pretty nice cars that were parked in two spaces as you describe only to find everything from nasty notes to key marks on the car when they return, especially in a busy lot. There's lot's of dipsticks out there.

Also agree off angle or taking two spaces is a magnet for idiots. As soon as someone KNOWS you are trying to protect your car, there are some who will find that inviting. Distance away is probably best and choosing your adjoining space mates may be good when you pulled in, no telling who pulls in after that nice car leaves before you. Odds are a minivan full of soccer kids....

I agree. Such cars that park at an angle and take up two slots are keying magnets.

It has been my experience that following that list gives you the best chance of survival unscathed, but ... I have made another observation.

The further you park away from potential issues the more likely some random AH will park right next to you while you are away. It is as if they know how much it irritates you. It happens so often that my wife and I know it is a conspiracy and have begun to laugh about it in amazement.

But it is not limited to our Genesis. It is any nice auto.

Damn, somebody else who has this problem!!! Sometimes I laugh, sometimes I want to cry!

I have very little sympathy if someone has damage to their car if they take up two spaces...... that's just asking for trouble. But, it's waaay wrong for someone to intentionally damage someone's property.

IMHO, that is one ugly moulding ....

Yep. They are not an eye pleaser, but they do get the job done.

I simply take them off and put them in the trunk.

I didn't get them for the looks, I got the shox to deter idiotic sons of @#%^@es from dinging the car.

Interesting thing, is ever since I got the shoxs, the neighbors that park next to me are scared of even touching the car. They park more over on their side.

I dispise door dings and more so the people that cause them.

Nevertheless, the fact is that the only ding I've gotten is when I parked normally, and I have not had any dings for two years by being "singular". No one anywhere has given me a hard time, either, other than my own friends who are simply jealous of how clean and shiny my black car is, and whiners on forums like this one. I think most of you are just afraid to be different, put simply.

In my experience, many people just think the car looks cool and they totally understand why I'm taking up two spaces well away from the bulk of the lazy parkers. See, I don't take two spaces near the door, but way off, away from everyone else. If you're offended by that, it's your problem, but it works. Trying to "game the system" is not worth my time.

Chill out, no one was offended except maybe by this last post. You can park and take up 10 spaces if you want. The dialog was that there was some trepidation taking additional spaces by some as it may call attention to the car from unwanted guests. If you have avoided any vandalism so far, good for you.

Nah, nothing bad could happen. I say, keep doing it...............

yup, I always baby my car when it's brand new. and then..... the first ding comes and all I can do is just stare at it and cry. but then after the mourning, I'm done with it and I don't seem to care as much about anything anymore.

it's always that first one that hurts

Decades ago my girlfriend purchased her first new car - a 1964 Chevy Impala as I recall - and when she arrived home in it her dad came out with a hammer in his hand and put a (gentle) ding in her front bumper, and said "The next one won't hurt nearly as much."

Yes, but in 1964 cars had steel, chromed, bumpers. ,-)

Here's a horror story. Last summer I bought a new flagpole. Too long for the trunk, but it just fit, at an angle, in the back seat. Picked up wife at another store. Did some errands. I forgot flagpole pole was in the back. We got back in the car. Wife put a bag in the back seat and slammed rear door. Bingo! Flagpole slides down and punches a hole in left rear door liner, just under armrest. Husband goes ballistic. Wife in doghouse.

It's the self-inflicted wounds that hurt most. Just after I had VentureShield film applied to my Genesis, I was washing the car and the hose slipped out of my hand, with the nozzle bouncing off the front fender and putting a gouge in the film. The paint was protected, but the film was marred - I checked with the installer and the only cure was to remove the film from the fender and put on a new piece. I opted not to because of the price, and now I don't notice that spot so much.
