Hi all,
Prospective Genesis owner here -- couldn't find a better forum to post, so posted it here.
I'm currently driving a G37 and my lease is expiring soon. I really like the car in terms of overall experience, had zero problems, but feature-wise it is very dated so I decided it's time to move on (the fact that the lease buyout price is higher than the market value helped with this decision), and naturally I came to the conclusion that no car would provide a better value than the Genesis sedan. I test drove the 3.8 coupe as well, loved it in general, but it wouldn't be such a good fit for my needs - the suspension was a little bit too stiff to my taste, and engine and road noise was more pronounced than in my current car.
What I'm looking for: comfortable daily driver (mostly freeway miles with roads of varying quality) with extra "oomph", that will put a smile on my face every time I step on the gas while merging on a freeway, and that I can take for extended road trips and not feel like I've been shoveling coal all night afterwards. I've driven a few cars before that constantly needed steering correction just to keep them going straight and it was very exhausting.
Originally I was set on the 2014 R-Spec, which are a fantastic deal now, as they can be had for almost $10k below MSRP, and I almost bought it.
I stopped by a dealer for a test drive and I was blown away by how much you get for the price of a 3-series with waaay less options, but the way transmission shifted never felt "right", and that was pretty much the only thing that made me pause and not say "SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!" immediately. Admittedly, there's not much you can experience during a 15-minute test drive (especially the ride quality on a washboard-like concrete that I was not able to test), but I didn't expect downshifting to be that slow, and it, frankly, reminded me of Lexuses from early 2000s. Let me put it this way, it was acceptable, but with everything else being so impressive, the transmission stood out.
When I came home after the test drive, I started researching, and found out that a lot of things, apparently, were addressed in a Gen2 - pretty much better everything: better handling, more cohesive interior with better-quality materials, and better overall experience. Frankly, I haven't test-driven a Gen2 because I'm afraid that if I find the 2015 to be light years ahead, I might regret settling for a 2014 model. I know there's always going to be a better car, but we are talking about Hyundai here who are catching up and surpassing competition in GIANT leaps.
I really like the Gen1 design - I think it's classy enough and timeless, and I believe that this design will age very gracefully. I am neutral to the way Gen2 looks, I guess it will still take some time to get used to.
What would you do if you were in my shoes today?
Should I get a 2014 R-spec now, and then trade it in for a 20XX Gen2 R-spec when they are a bargain with the Gen3 model change; or get a 2015 base model now? I would like to stay under $40k, and plan on keeping the car for 5 years or more.
I know that with the new model there are probably some kinks to be worked out (all my friends who bought different cars but the first model year were at the dealership way more often than they would have liked), and, obviously, I will be missing a lot of the technology; while a 2014 is a very mature and stable platform.
Any advice/encouragement is appreciated! Hope to become a regular here soon
