If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Should I get a 2014 or 2015?

Hi all,

Prospective Genesis owner here -- couldn't find a better forum to post, so posted it here.

I'm currently driving a G37 and my lease is expiring soon. I really like the car in terms of overall experience, had zero problems, but feature-wise it is very dated so I decided it's time to move on (the fact that the lease buyout price is higher than the market value helped with this decision), and naturally I came to the conclusion that no car would provide a better value than the Genesis sedan. I test drove the 3.8 coupe as well, loved it in general, but it wouldn't be such a good fit for my needs - the suspension was a little bit too stiff to my taste, and engine and road noise was more pronounced than in my current car.

What I'm looking for: comfortable daily driver (mostly freeway miles with roads of varying quality) with extra "oomph", that will put a smile on my face every time I step on the gas while merging on a freeway, and that I can take for extended road trips and not feel like I've been shoveling coal all night afterwards. I've driven a few cars before that constantly needed steering correction just to keep them going straight and it was very exhausting.

Originally I was set on the 2014 R-Spec, which are a fantastic deal now, as they can be had for almost $10k below MSRP, and I almost bought it.
I stopped by a dealer for a test drive and I was blown away by how much you get for the price of a 3-series with waaay less options, but the way transmission shifted never felt "right", and that was pretty much the only thing that made me pause and not say "SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!" immediately. Admittedly, there's not much you can experience during a 15-minute test drive (especially the ride quality on a washboard-like concrete that I was not able to test), but I didn't expect downshifting to be that slow, and it, frankly, reminded me of Lexuses from early 2000s. Let me put it this way, it was acceptable, but with everything else being so impressive, the transmission stood out.

When I came home after the test drive, I started researching, and found out that a lot of things, apparently, were addressed in a Gen2 - pretty much better everything: better handling, more cohesive interior with better-quality materials, and better overall experience. Frankly, I haven't test-driven a Gen2 because I'm afraid that if I find the 2015 to be light years ahead, I might regret settling for a 2014 model. I know there's always going to be a better car, but we are talking about Hyundai here who are catching up and surpassing competition in GIANT leaps.

I really like the Gen1 design - I think it's classy enough and timeless, and I believe that this design will age very gracefully. I am neutral to the way Gen2 looks, I guess it will still take some time to get used to.

What would you do if you were in my shoes today?
Should I get a 2014 R-spec now, and then trade it in for a 20XX Gen2 R-spec when they are a bargain with the Gen3 model change; or get a 2015 base model now? I would like to stay under $40k, and plan on keeping the car for 5 years or more.

I know that with the new model there are probably some kinks to be worked out (all my friends who bought different cars but the first model year were at the dealership way more often than they would have liked), and, obviously, I will be missing a lot of the technology; while a 2014 is a very mature and stable platform.

Any advice/encouragement is appreciated! Hope to become a regular here soon :)

2015

If you have to purchase soon, the 2015's are going for MSRP (and sometimes above), so the only 2015 you can get under $40K (not including tax) is the base trim model. I personally would not pay MSRP for a Genesis because I know they will sell for a lot less in 6 months.

In California 2015s go for about $1000 below MSRP - demand is not as strong, people are clinging to their MB's and BMW's. But you're right, even with just the Signature package and nothing else the market price would already be $41.5K.

I don't have to buy now, as I can wait (have a beater that I could drive for a few months) - I just thought about the 2014 model, since it looks like an amazing deal.
I wonder if the resale value for Gen1 will go down dramatically as well with people upgrading to Gen2 and getting rid of their Gen1's - that's probably something to consider as well, it's easy to tell by looking at how much 2011 Sonatas go for vs 2010 and before.
Decisions, decisions :-)

If you buy a 2014, you should be able to get close to $10K off MSRP. So resale price is not likely to go down as much as a 2015 that is selling near list, and will be selling for $4K off a year from now.

I think you have to look at the features that you can get for the money you want to spend, and decide that way. A lot of smart people are getting 2014's right now at incredible discounts.

I guess it depends on what you want and your budget, right? They are very different cars, so much so you would never know you were in the same model if all identification was removed and you had no previous knowledge of either.

Arguments about great pricing on Gen 1 cars are rather lame as I you could also pick up a like new used 2012 for 1/2 the price of a new heavily discounted 2013/14. With the new model release they will have quite a few almost new cars available in the near future at most dealers.

If budget is not too much of a concern, hands down the 2015.

If budget is not much of a concern, why only consider a Genesis? No one but the OP knows what kind financial situation he is in, so these kinds of threads have questionable value. Obviously, the 2015 Genesis is a better car than the 2014, but right now it is about $20K more expensive (2014 R-Spec $10K off list, 2015 V8 Ultimate at MSRP). For someone like the OP (based on his requirements of a sporty car), if he had $55K to spend, I would recommend he look at a vette or something like that.

BTW, I understand the point about a used 2012, but that is bad example since that particular model year was known to have excessive oil consumption on the 5.0 engine (since fixed in 2013+).

Then he should come get mine when it becomes available as I know for a fact it does not take a drop of oil. ;) Last oil change I went a little more than one should, 11,000 km to be exact. Even at this milage, no indication of any lower oil level on the stick and I was actually looking out for this after reading some complaints on the forum. Obviously some were affected and others not. ;)

Just curious, you say they corrected the issue. Is there something they actually say they did or is it just being reported here on site that 2013 seems to be rectified?

More than likely, they fixed it sometime during the 2012 model year, and even then not every early 20012 engine seems to have been affected.

Some people who got HMA to replace their 2012 5.0 engine due to excessive oil usage, reported on this forum that the HMA rep told them the new engine will definitely not have the same problem, which tells me they did something to fix the newer ones. I don't have a link, but it is somewhere on this forum.

Good point! Right now all the used 2012/2013 R-Specs with 20-30k miles are listed for almost the price of a discounted 2014 new, which is ridiculous - I guess it will take a little bit for the market to correct itself.

The sad part is that my budget is actually a little bigger than that, but I need to replace two cars -- one coming off lease, and the second car suddenly started developing problems that are too expensive to fix...
I looked at good ol' American muscle too - Camaro SS and Mustang GT, but couldn't get past cheap plastic in the interior (especially door handles that I'm going to touch every day), no matter if it's a $21k base model or a $55k fully loaded, and the cars felt a lot heavier than I thought they would.
Of all the cars I test drove, Genesis felt like a better compromise between power and comfort without an insane price sticker.

Thank you guys for your input!!!

I made the same decision last month. I went with the known Commodity of a 2014 R spec.

I liked the styling better on the 1st Generation Genesis. The $15 Grand Cheaper price tag. And when a car is completely redesigned there may be some problems. Maybe, Maybe not, we'll see.

My 2013 premium has dropped $1,000 per month since I bought it 12/20/12. As stated on another post, I sold it and bought a BMW 328...the Genesis was amazing and gorgeous, but the drop was too much...I believe there is going to be a huge surplus of 2014, so really haggle...call dealers in other states and take a short flight in necessary...I bet you can find a better deal than you have now...just my humble opinion...besides the resale drop, the car is amazing!

Selling a great car because you think it is depreciating too much AND THEN buying another new car and getting whacked immediately with that "drive off the lot depreciation" makes little sense to me. Hello Dolly?!

Yes, very true but I got a great deal on the new BMW and they gave me much more than the Hyundai dealer who shared that the Genesis "were a dime a dozen and can be bought for 17K" thus, my payment is not much more...I'm comfortable with it and while I did love the Genesis, the Hyundai experience is crap...as far as "whacking goes" it was at Hyundai, not BMW, so Hello Dolly!

+1
I had the same dilemma. I chose the deep discount and got the RSpec leftover. I could not pass on the V8 and the HP, for the price of a 2015 3.8 base. Im very happy with my decision and it has exceeded my expectations so far. :)
