  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

What's the V6's top speed?

Now I must preface, by saying I am not looking for any demonstrated speed here :D

My question comes from some of the reviews I have seen in the press. They talk about being a tire rating limited 130mph for the V6. Which is true the Dunlop Sport 5000Ms are H rated (130mph)

http://www.wheelstudio.com/tire_speed_ratings.php

I have seen the V8 quoted in reviews as having a top speed of 156mph. However I have noted the V8 is fitted with the same 5000Ms as the V6 (from some of the photo albums on this forum).

Why would the press quote a tire limited speed for one and not the other?

If the tire is not the limiting factor what is the V6's top speed?

I would like to wager a guess based on horsepower, weight of the car, and drag co-efficient. I would say around 142 mph.
my guess.
would love to hear actual.

Im pretty sure the v6 will hit near to 160 as the V8...just not as quick :)

I dont think either one of them are actually limited except by drag (wind). If I had a good stretch of road and cruising with the jet stream...Im pretty sure the needle would go past 160 in my v8...

260Km/h = 161Mph

My 5000Ms have a V, not an H. I believe that puts the top speed for the tire at 149.

Thanks to everyone so far for the feedback and great comments. Sounds like the consensus estimates are between 142 and 161mph.

BacktoHyundaibychoice, You are right ! I just checked my tires and the Dunlop SP Sport 5000M (235/50 R18) are indeed V rated.

I guess the press must be refering to the tires on the 17inch rims when talking about an H rating (anyone know if they are different?)

Great YouTube clip too. Did you notice it was taken in a tunnel? Definitely optimal for minimizing cross wind effects. It still did not say if it was V6 or V8 though.

the clip was filmed in s.korea and V8 is not available over there. v8 will only come with VI(the replacement of eqqus).

161 mph sounds a bit optimistic. I wonder if the emission controls, exhaust, ecu, etc. are the same as on the north american version as the Korean domestic version.
We need someone near sea level to double check tire pressure and find a long flat road!

Superidler,
Thanks for the clarification on the tunnel in South Korea. I was worried that was my wife being late on her way to work again in the 4.6.::eek:

On a long flat road with little wind, my guess is you can get the V6 up to 135-140mph tops. I'm skeptical of any claim much higher.

Now, the V8, I think 155mph seems reasonably possible.

Someone needs to take their Genesis on an episode of PINKS. :p ;) :D

Do we have an actual top speed on the V8 model yet? Some say 155, 159, 161, but what can it really do in MPH?

The tires are V rated which are 149mph and funny thing is I read the March issue of Car and Driver just today and there is a one page write up on the V6 Genesis and it lists top speed @155mph and it says it is limited by a governer(sp?)

As noted, most cars are governor limited.

On my V6 I can go about 70 mph at about 2100 rpm in top gear, so I am assuming that at 6300 rpm that would be 210 mph (if not governor limited)? Does that sound correct?

Power to speed ratio is not a linear equation as wind resistance goes up exponentially as your speed goes up, requiring more power for every mph you add.

Similarly rpm to power ratio is also not linear.

Just to clarify, the speed rating on the tire has nothing to do with how fast the car will actually go. It just indicates the maximum speed that could be maintained for a sustained period before the tire becomes unsafe due to overheating, rubber compound breakdown, etc (as per testing by the manufacturer) That said, when driving 250km/Hr, the tire's rating should be the least of your concerns unless you're on a closed test track. I.e.: Police, deer, other drivers, an old hubcap lying on the road

ah, the Korean's are playing the old Germanic 155mph limited export game!
Damn!
still impressive.

Except that on most cars the speed governor will be set at or very close to the speed rating of the OEM tires for liability reasons.
