  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Oil Consumption in '12 R-Spec

A manufacturer is under no legal obligation to provide a crate motor if the can repair the existing one to satisfy a warranty claim. From a post above, someone is speculating that Hyundai actually would prefer to use a crate motor if they had enough to go around, but my have used them all up (and they are not manufactured any more).

When doing it through BBB routes you have more control over what/how your car is fixed. HMA isn't going to just give you a replacement that easy...its a fight and if your going to fight, fight!

I am just explaining what the legal obligations are under US warranty law, and there is legal requirement to provide a completely new engine if they can fix the old one (regardless of what BBB says). If Hyundai has no more crate engines, then they can't give you one and they have to fix the old one.

The week before vacation noticed a slight knocking in my engine usually during acceleration. It is not all the time. Did not have time to take to dealer so took another vehicle. Spoke with mechanic friends and they said "Engine knocking is never ever good", "Check your oil" and "Immediately get your car to dealer".
Note: No check engine or oil lights have come on and I have oil changed at the dealer every 5k miles.
So I check the oil before I go to the dealer so they don't BS me and what do I find? A bone dry dipstick. Yep bone dry. No oil on my garage floor, no burning smell, nothing.
Dealer checks the car and I tell them about the knocking (not about the dipstick) and I get an oil change which they say I am down 1 quart. How is this possible when the stick was dry as a bone and this car takes 8 quarts. So they blow over the knocking and now want me to bring in car every 1000 miles to see where the oil level is to see if there is a problem.
My mechanic friends say I need to play their game because of the warranty and I should also bump it up to Hyundai America Corp. to have it on record just in case things don't go well.
Any thoughts?

Yes you need to make sure Hyundai has it documented. Get a copy of anything you can from them.

Hello. I took the Genny in for her first oil change and requested to start the oil consumption test since I was down approximately 2 quarts (a little below the first whole on the dip stick). Keep in mind the car has only 4900 miles and thanks to this forum, I would have never thought about checking my oil periodically mostly due to the way I drive. As a result of the consumption test, the dealer has instructed me to bring back every 500 miles and if oil is needed bring back so they can add/document accordingly. I was also surprised that the Genny did not have a maintenance indicator like most vehicles and the recommended oil change is at 3750 (really). However, I was told that all 2015 models and forward will have that feature.

What year is your R-Spec? 2012?

Hello Palloverspec, correct, my RSpec is 2012.

Thanks.

I also have a 2012 R-Spec and I am going through and oil consumption test. I also opened up a case with Hyundai.

From the information I have gathered on this forum, it appears to be a design flaw with the piston rings.

Is BBB, better business bureau? Is there a particular dept. you have to talk to?

Yes, these forum acts as a barometer for gathering valuable information that will help end users resolve most problems. You mentioned a design flaw with the piston rings; I was told by the dealer’s mechanic that I can expect consumption during the “break-in” stage due to oil getting into the piston rings or something close to that.

Pose a question. Since Hyundai is not using Crate motors anymore and replacing the short block and rebuilding. Do you think the oil consumption is worse than having the dealer rebuild the motor? My dealer provides me with free oil changes for the life of the car. I just wonder if i change the oil every 3000 miles would be better than a mechanic tearing down my motor and rebuilding it on a new short block? Do you think there will be any long term problems with the motor by not fixing the oil consumption problem, but keeping the oil levels full? I just do not like the idea of the dealer mechanics rebuilding the motor. It can fix one problem, but cause others.
Options are welcome.

Thanks

Yes that is correct. You will have oil consumption during the break-in period. But I would not expect to see loosing a quart of oil every 1000 miles during the break-in.

Well I really like my dealership. I start my consumption test and was 2500 miles in with a 1000 to go when they called me yesterday and said they ordered me a new engine. No fighting or nothing. My rep said this should not be happening and Hyundai should get you a new one, period. So we will see if it is a short block and have to be built or a crate. From what I have read, probably not a crate, but who knows. Just happy with the service.

Please update us if you get crate engine or local rebuild.

Starting mine today. Did my own test first and was about 3 quarts down around 1400 miles. Dealer seems friendly and not putting up a fight so far. I hope its a new motor.

Just dropped of the R-Spec. It is a new crate motor. Went back and looked at sitting in the stand. They told me it should only take 2 days, so I should be able to pick up on Sat.

I talked to my dealership and they told me they don't do rebuilds and just order crates. Also, I got my engine replaced around 10k miles ago and Saturday the transmission went out. It started with hard 2-3 & 4-5 shifts, then slipping, then random downshifts and boom! I'm thinking the trans didn't like the new/fresh motor. Just something to watch out for.

So I fixed my oil consumption problem. I traded it in for a new 2015 Ford Fusion Titanium 2.0L Turbo. Getting 29 MPG city and I'm not looking back. So long R-Spec.
