In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Hello again everybody. I just wanted to confirm that everybody's Genesis behaves the same way as mine. I have a 2012 Hyundai Genesis 5.0 R-Spec and when the gas light comes on, I manage to put in about 60 liters of gas. I heard this car can hold 75 liters. Is it normal for modern cars to hold about 15 liters of gas as an "emergency fuel" just in case we don't have a gas station nearby? Or is it to prevent us from draining the gas levels so low that we suck up residue into the gas lines?

I tried searching the forum using a few keywords such as "emergency fuel" and "low fuel light" and I came up with some results in 2009 pertaining to the 4.6 V8. I was wondering if there were any newer information.

Thank you, and have a good night!

I have a 2015 Genesis and when my light came on, I had 2.78 gallons (10.52 Liters) left in the tank. The 2015 holds 20.34 gallons (77 liters) per the manual. It does not state what the reserve amount is but my guess is 3 gallons (11.35 liters).

Good morning, Alwaysforward!

Thank you for your reply. How many miles do you have remaining when your light turns on? Mine has about 70 kilometers remaining when the gas light turns on. My guess is I can push it for another 100 kilometers or so, but I'm too scared to try ^^

Get gas when the light comes on..(or before)..
Not sure how the Genesis fuel pump likes sucking air. (can't be good for it)
Same for cranking the starter motor for a long time, when you restart after an empty tank....All the junk that has settled to the bottom of the fuel tank over the years will get sucked into the injectors.
.

not to sure, I usually drive mine until the distance say --- miles remaining on fuel

That is really not good for the fuel pump. It uses the gas in the tank to cool it as it works. I usually recommend never letting the tank get below 1/4...which is why I am at the gas station every 4 days haha

55 miles... (88.5 Kilometers)

yeah I know, but I'm guessing that's why they have the --- (dashes) come when 30 miles remaining so a driver wont destroy the pump

When it does that, I reset my trip odometer, so I know how close to that 30 miles I'm getting.

Another old wives tale. That may have been true in the past, but technology has advanced a lot since that tale first became folklore.

Running out of gas can be a slight problem, due to the complexity of engine injection systems these days.

Thank you everybody for your replies!

I think I'll start filling up the car before my gas light comes on :) Just wanted to make a general comparison and make sure everything is A-Ok!

Have a good afternoon!! And if you have any questions for me, feel free to ask!

I put gas in everytime the gauge shows 1/2 full. Never let it drop below. I don't always fill up, maybe 20-25.00 worth, but that is good enough, especially with todays fuel prices.

And not to forget, in winter, it is a good idea so the fuel line doesn't freeze up. Also, if you are in very slow traffic, or the traffic is not moving, the gasoline in the tank can be very beneficial.

Just my .02 worth

Hi CLASSYRSPEC,

Roger that! Today was definitely a good example as to why we need at least half a tank in the winter! Toronto weather..:(

Are you sure you are filling your tank completely? Or just until the first click at the pumps?
For my car the pump clicks off about 10 litres short of the tank being full, and by full i mean seeing the level of gas in the filler neck. I wouldn't recommend doing this as you risk spilling gas etc if you don't know how to do it properly, I just do it on road trips where I'd rather not risk running out of gas.
I'd say the mileage to go is pretty close to accurate as I have filled over 70 litres before and did not go that far past when it stopped telling me how kms until empty. I think it was about 40 or 30 when I filled up.

I did an experiment the other day.
The fuel light came on, indicated range was 50 mi.
I drove right at 15 mi, then put in as much as I could.
Pump clicks be damned, i filled her til the fuel was level with the opening of the tank.
20.06 gal was every drop i could get in her.

Running any car near the empty point can result is the fuel level falling below the submerged fuel pump level. Probably not much of an issue in the winter up north, but the new fuel pumps rely on the surrounding fuel to act as a cooling agent for fuel pump motor.

In hot weather, it could overheat the pump and cause a pump failure.

Gotcha :) I've been fueling up once I hit 400 kilometers on each tank. I "should" be able to get another 100-150 kilometers out of it, but I don't dare test that!
