If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Check Engine Light for Low Battery Voltage

I went to a local dealer yesterday to buy a Certified 2012 Genesis 5.0 with 38,000 miles on it. On the test drive, I noticed the check engine light. They said it was nothing and were going to bring it to the service department to have it checked out. I left. They called me and told me just as they suspected it was nothing. They said they code indicated low battery voltage and they simply charged the battery and the car is good to go. They said that that happens on car lots due to cars sitting. (I test drove the car two days in a row). I have never owned a foreign car so I really don't know if what they are saying makes sense. I really like the car but am afraid to make the plunge because of what happened. Anyone know anything about the CEL coming on just for a low battery?

Could have been. The OBD II code P0562 indicates a low voltage situation. And, a bad battery or discharged battery could cause this. Given the car is a CPO and may still be under its factory warranty, I would not worry about it.

It's possible it was a low voltage indicator, but I would be concerned that they are not telling you the truth. Even if it was low voltage, that is not a good sign.

One thing you should know is that the 2012 Genesis 5.0 V8 engines had a fairly common problem with excess oil consumption. I would not recommend that model as used car purchase.

Does this car have a battery warning indicator? If so, wouldn't that light have illuminated as well?

Does the 2012 4.6 liter v8 have the oil burning issues too?

I would think that if what dealer said was correct, the battery would be recharged by the alternator shortly after driving.

Some Genesis models have had battery discharge problems, but they were persistent problems that occurred because the battery was being drained even when the engine was off (not a fault of the battery).

But I don't recall anyone complaining on this forum of a low battery indicator on the instrument cluster. However, you can search the forum to be sure (use forum search or use Google).

No. Part way through the 2012 model year they introduced a brand new 5.0 version of the V8 that had that problem. No problems with the 4.6 engine in 2011-2012. No widespread problem in 2013+ 5.0 engines.

However, there were some other problems with the 2009 and maybe early 2010 4.6 V8 engines.

It just seems to me that if the battery voltage was low...a battery warning light would come on ...not the check engine light. Is there a battery warning light on this car?

The separate battery light is for a charging system failure. That would come on when the alternator stops charging the battery. So, I could see an OBD error without a charging system light.

The battery warning light (and all warning lights) come on when the ignition is turned on just before the car starts. You can test this by pressing the ignition switch once quickly without starting the engine. The purpose of that is to allow one to make sure the warning lights are working. Once the car starts, there should be no warning lights if everything is OK.

Usually, a battery warning light will go out once the car starts if the battery is being charged OK by the alternator, even if the battery still has slightly low voltage, but not 100% sure about this on the Genesis.

Regarding oil consumption, you may want to do your own research there. This forum is not of a unified opinion regarding the prevalence and significance of oil issues in the 2012 5.0L engine.

Since Hyundai doesn't get embarrassed when a lot of people suffered complete brake failure, or when the 2012 5.0 engine used a quart of oil every 1000 miles, why should they worry about a little bit of seat stretching?
You made the right choice, unless you have an unlimited supply of motor oil at your disposal.

Mark, there you go again. Not every 5.0 burns oil, and the way I know that is I own one that uses 1/2 quart every 7,500 miles.

When I think of you now, here's what goes through my mind: "if this guy has said it once, he's said it 300 times, but hasn't ever owned a 5.0 himself. But every single time he writes a post, Google finds it, and the value of my perfectly good 5.0 (no oil burning issue) drops more quickly than if Mark had simply let people who actually have the problem with their 5.0s burning oil talk about it and not parrot, parrot, parrot the problem over and over again.

I never said that every 2012 5.0 burns oil. I don't even know if it burns it, or what, but it seems to disappear at an alarming rate according to many members of this forum who had an early 2012 5.0 engine. If someone wants to read all the posts in this forum on this subject instead of taking my word for it, I would welcome that. I will say, to Hyundai's credit, that they recently have been replacing engines that had this problem, but it took them a long time to do that on a regular basis. But my recollection is that they will not replace or repair the engine if it loses less than a quart every 7500 miles.

BTW, in all my Japanese cars I have owned since 1979, not one has ever used 1/2 quart of oil between oil changes. Likewise, my Genesis 3.8 V6 does not use any oil that I can detect between oil changes in the 52,000 miles I have driven it. I change my own oil, so I know how exactly much comes out of the crankcase when I change it.

Even if it was only low battery voltage, I would worry about the battery. Batteries that sit with a low charge, often don't last very long. Genesis batteries aren't cheap.
I would insist on a new battery.
You say Certified, but is the car really a CPO? Even so, make sure that they will cover any check engine problems .......In writing.

AFAIK, it was the early 2012's that had the oil consumption issue. I have owned a 2012 5.0 since December of '12 and it has never leaked or used a drop of oil in 10K miles.

It was only the early 5.0 GDI engines that had the oil consumption problem. The 5.0 GDI engine was introduced part way through the 2012 model year. I never saw any complaints in this forum about excess oil consumption for any Genesis 4.6 FI engine, regardless of model year.

As already noted here, the 5.0 oil usage issue is on earlier motors in 2012. I believe a 3-4 month span of the production run. There is good info on this here in forum posts. Includes production dates to worry about. Looks like a German piston ring issue that hit this and other brands of cars that year for a time.
