  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Oil Consumption in '12 R-Spec

I'm currently @ 34k miles and burning 2ish qts per thousand miles. My engine was rebuilt at 5k due to oil consumption, and this will be the 3rd time I've had the engine apart (also had a broken valve spring).

Why a rebuild instead of a new engine? Yours is the first I've heard of rebuilding for this issue.

Just completed my test, last one i was down 3.51 at about 1100 miles now they are pulling covers today to take pics and send to warranty. Not sure why the are taking pics under the valve covers but hopefully I can get a new motor soon, when I get on it nothing but black smoke screen lol.

No offense.... I would do anything in my power to make sure monkeys at the local dealer do not touch this engine. Period. Looks like too late based on this comments and more below.

FORCE them to give you NEW engine. Complete, NO local monkeys doing anything but attaching a complete new engine to the transmissions and all electrical plugs and hoses. And they may not be good enough to do that.

+1. I bet they no longer have that generation engines as new in box. Nothing but the 2015 version. This is a mess. Early birds got the worm (new engines while Hyundai had them).

What part of VA are you in?

I'm sure Hyundai has a stockpile of crate engines. Otherwise they grab from the re-manufactured block market.

After changing from 5w-20 to 5w-30 it is consuming less oil.

However I can't get an accurate reading of how much the car is actually consuming.

On long freeway trips (more than 400 miles) there is less consumption of oil (running 5w-30) compared to short distance.
I took a trip back and forth from San Francisco <-> Los Angeles, I didn't see any oil drop w/ 5w-30 on the dipstick.
Currently I only drive 10 miles one way to work and its definitely noticeable, its dropping about half of the dipstick for 1300 miles.

Do you guys know how much quart of oil it is on the orange dipstick from E to F? I measured .8qt.

I just did another oil change running 5w-30 and going to watch more carefully on the consumption.

Can we all get together and sue Hyundai for a new motor instead of each of us going there to the dealer and trying our luck?

I am not sure if it is normal or not for a car like this to consume oil. I know two BMW M3 owners, they told me engines like this its normal.....
They both have to add oil during their oil change intervals or it goes below E on their dipstick.

^^ you seem to confirm others with this issue. In town driving cause more burning. Other posts say it was the rings. And their new motors fixed it.

it is normal to a degree, (i work at bmw) but not 2-3 quarts per 1000 like i was. It was a smokescreen when I got on it real hard. But yes the higher performance engines do burn more than others thats why we top off for free if you come in.

finally got the car back! New long block and got my drivers seat warrantied too. Happy camper so far!

Do any of the 2014's have this issue? Maybe I am lazy, but I have not checked oil in any car I have owned in the past 10 years. Just drive it and change the oil. I never check it and I have never had any burn oil because they are always full (or damn near) when changing the oil. Should I be paying more attention on the 5.0 from Hyundai??

Congrats. Wish you got the entire crate engine. What did they do to the seats to make the stretching not come back, ever?

There was a short time in 2012, when the "German Engineering" piston rings from Germany were defective. They ended up in the Tau 5.0. Similar issue for German brands. They were designed for GDI and hyper low friction for mileage. All 4.6 in 2012 not affected. Most of the 5.0 in 2012 not affected. None of the 2013 and moving forward have any issue. Hyundai seems to be standing by those customers who are squeaky wheels. We have heard many stories of VW, Audi, BMW, and others not supporting their customers. Forcing them to keep their oil burners.

OK. Thank you.

hey guys so i'm at 4k miles now and I've consumed a total of about 1.5 - 2 quarts of oil.

i know its well below hyundai's limit but what do you guys think?

i also confirmed that my last oil change from the dealer they used 5-30.
