Oil Consumption in '12 R-Spec

Hi All!

I am new to the forum. I have a deposit on a 2012 RSpec and am scheduled to pick it up in Miami in 2 weeks. Is there a way to tell if my engine is an affected engine with oil consumption problems (This question may have been asked and answered in this thread but I don't have a ton of time to read through the 600+ posts)? Thanks

It is based on the build dates.. I now forget which date range was affected.. It is in the 600 posts. Maybe search for "date range". Do not hold me to it, but think it was from Aug or Sept of 2011 through May or 2012. By late in build year and by first of 2013s the ring defects or issue was gone. And only a portion of those built in the effected times have issues.

Thanks for the quick responses! Carfax shows that the "Vehicle was manufactured and shipped to Florida" on 1/17/2012. (2) Owner car. Vin KMHGC4DH8CU186456

Good price on that. I would just throw in an extended warranty in case you do need to deal with oil burning in the future.

Thanks for the response. My concern is that if the car has an oil burn issue I will spend an inordinate amount of time (based on what I have been reading) chasing Hyundai for a new engine.

ALso looking at the service history it seems that there are a high number of oil changes and "Maintenance Inspection completed" and "Vehicle Serviced" notes with no background information. January 2012 manufacture date is concerning as well

I agree. I would look into another or maybe a 2013 model so you don't have to deal with the oil burning issue.

Run Forrest, run!!!!

All those oil changes and inspections are alarming.

Thanks for all of the responses. I bought a 2015 Genesis on Friday with 12,868 miles on it. Should solve the oil burn concerns!

Hi all,
I also posted here before about my issue.
I have the 2012 Genesis 5.0 (non R spec).

I used 5w-20 Mobil 1 synthetic (crap oil) and yes since 7000 miles I've been noticing oil consumption like others here.

I also changed it to 5w-30 Castrol Syntec. Better consumption.
Went 1500 miles and went from F to L on the dipstick (orange one).

I have 20000~ miles, so I am fed up w/ it.
Went to the dealership where I purchased the car.

If they say its normal since it says to check your oil level in your manual, tell them to write it in paper if they are saying its normal, b/c they are saying they aren't going to fix it.
You can go for Class Action lawsuit w/ it. But since I don't see one yet I think most of dealership is willing to fix the issue willingly, depends on how you talk to them.

Take a print out of this forum. Show them, thats what I did. He didn't even argue, he said we haven't had this problem on Genesis b/c there aren't that many 5.0's.
However, the dealership had 2 Equus owners swap out the engine, by now Hyundai HQ knows of it.
The 4.6 don't have the issue. I don't think 2014 are even that much better. I think 2014 still has issues.

The service advisor told me, they have to change oil, contact Hyundai HQ about the issue (opening a case w/ a number), and monitor it every 1000 or 1500 miles.
Hyundai HQ rep will come out when they actually check the consumption, if it fails they will swap the engine. (Not rebuild, if they are willing to do a rebuild something isn't right.)

Basically he also told me dealership service makes money off this, b/c they have to do the labor and the cost of replacing the engine is on Hyundai Corporation.

This is a dealership in LA.

Only 2012s with build dates prior to ~Feb 2012 have the oil consumption issue. I'm sure there are rare cases with some 13s and 14s but this was a design issue its the early design 2012 5.0 engine.

I hope your right... I have a 2013 rspec with 3800 miles. Checked oil last week seen it was down some. Didn't check it after I bought it new so don't know if it was like that. Also the car is a left over bought it with 30 miles on it. Just yesterday changed to full synthetic 5 W 20.. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Well, either way you have an issue w/ this, take it in. Take a print out of this forum, some dealerships never had to deal w/ it.
So they don't know the process.

If its happening to you show that you aren't alone. You can even google "Equus oil consumption" and you can also see it.

I let you know once its done. This Friday they do the oil change, and my consumption test starts.

There are people even w/ 2013, 2014 that has the issue. So I don't think its a design issue, its something else.
Some cars will have it some don't.

Ive put about 4500 miles since purchasing mine. I noticed it was a littler over a quart low. But I dont know when the dealer changed the oil last. the sticker says its due to be changed in 500 miles.. Im hoping I dont have issues when I go get the oil changed this weekend..

2014 a case of oil consumption.

Well 2014 still new. We will know in time if the 2014 don't have this issue or not.

Here is the Equus.

I didn't have to try hard to get them to start doing the consumption test.

I gave them print out of this forum. Explained I tried different oils brand, grade, even different oil filters.
Same result. Oil vanishing. I don't have blue smoke. Or any signs of leak.

Thanks and good luck with your OC test.

Reminds me of my 96 Seville STS back in the day. Had to keep an eye on the oil and yes the head gaskets were still good

Chosonnomo why do you say Mobil 1 is crap oil? All oil reviews I have seen in the past 5 years actually rate it as one of the best. Has something changed? Honest question. Since this happened with RP a few years back. They had really good oil. Then one day the product seemed to change and it now burns fast and turns to foam in your crank case.
I personally only Mobil 1 or Castro Edge Syntec.

Edit: just did some digging. And Mobil 1 is still the brand most other brands use as their benchmark. With many brands actually using the term "as good as Mobil 1 synthetic". I think I will stick with my Mobil 1.

Also here is an older test. Actually done in 1996 I believe. But Mobil 1 and Pennzoil Perfomax were the two that seemed to keep getting the nod for performance in the taxi test.

Relative to Mobil 1, I've used it for over 30 years in a variety of engines (single cylinder to V10's) with long engine lives (never needed to overhaul any engine and the vehicles were usually driven to well over 150,000 miles.

I've also had the drain oil (5w-30) on the Genesis analysed after the last two 7500 mile oil changes. The reports came back fine with good TBN left.

Hi there,
Regarding Mobil-1.

I have lot of car maniacs around me. If it works for you w/o issues then keep using it.

I have 2 friends w/ M3, and that car is notorious also for oil consumption.
They have worst consumption w/ Mobil 1, I think I have put the link somewhere on one of my previous posts of the forum.

The heck those guys use Shell Rotella designed for Diesel engine and they run it in their cars without issues.
Due to oil consumption.

My opinion is my opinion but after this whole oil consumption issue and looking around information why this is happening, people near me has the most consumption w/ Mobil 1.
It might not be the case for you. But brand does make a difference.

Like I said that's my opinion. It works for you and your car, then don't bother what I said about it being crap. It is subjective.

To elaborate look at the below, for some people Mobil 1 actually stopped their oil consumption.
