I'll write NHTSA a letter as soon as I get some free-time. Hopefully, they replace for free without me having to write them a certified letter,etc.

That is not what I suggested. Go to the NHTSA website and file an online complaint with the US government. It takes just a few minutes. There would have been no recall without others filling complaints there, so now it is your turn (or your father's turn).

The other suggestion is to contact HMA directly by phone or mail about your recall claim and get a case number. HMA is the ultimate party in determining whether it is covered under the recall, but your dealer is incented to have it not covered, so if they come back and say no, the go directly to HMA.

Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit, made by Continental Automotive, which controls the Genesis braking system (including anti-lock brake control, etc).

My HECU went out and the dealer couldn't replicate the problem. After my persistent efforts to get them to fix it they finally agreed that it was the problem. Thank god I had a aftermarket warranty. The HECU was $2800! My deducible was only $250.

I have a 09 v8, and having the same issue. I just submitted a form on NHTSA. My pedal is pretty low and requires a lot of thrust to get it to stop. I'm a bit disturbed by Hyundai's response to this. Being a new first time parent, this makes me extremely paranoid. i really hope this issue gets fixed sooner, than later.

Did you contact a dealer? You need to get it fixed as soon as possible.

I did, and they would not do anything for me. I gave them the campaign number too, and they told me it's not an open order on my car. And they can't do anything if their computer does not show it.

So - I found the letter that I told them I had (I just didn't have it on me.) And I called to speak to service manager. I left a voicemail for him to call me back. If not, I'll be making a trip up there. I'm really angry knowing that if they at least tried they could see this issue, or even cared to drive the car I wouldn't have to go up there a second time.

Dealer training for service writers are Terrible. Certainly the typical service writer blow off. Now the moron service manager is putting your family safety at risk by not following up. Hyundai needs to slaughter these type of dealer onto the ash heap of Hyundai dealer history. Of course that will not happen.. BMW, and all other brands are susceptible to the service writer blow off. These $15 an hour wonks treat you like they work for Sonny on the Godfather. They hire ******* personality types with a life grudge. Then train them to be half hearted smiling and supportive as long as you do not deviate from their routine of support.

They are also taught in training, just like cops in their military type training, that you the civilian are always going to lie. And to treat you ultimately when in a conflict outside their narrow job role as the enemy.

I have a just opened set of out of standard situation that put the service writer at the purchasing dealer (Evansville Hyundai), into a tizzy. Over the phone he got edgy when I pressed him out of his box over the 2015 Hankook tire issue. My cars has the affected tires, and when he said it was not in Hyundai system for new tires (like others), and I asked him to become a advocate with Hyundai to get on the list (I a likely am, or will be because I have the exact problems and tires under the replacement recall), he did his typical service writer blow off routine.

I was going to have them put on the mud flaps ordered from them, and first oil change.. Plus the TSB on the taillight. Well, may just pick up the flaps and go someplace else. Plus will not recommend them to others on here. All because of a attitude, assuming customers always lie, and not connecting with the customer in a professional and enrolling way.

I realize that Hyundai may claim that it is not covered if your warranty has expired, but you still need to get it fixed if you are driving the car.

I would contact HMA and open a case with them.

That's what I'm doing now Mark, thank you. I canceled my appointment for tomorrow. They wanted me to pay for a diag fee which is unacceptable.

What do you mean by "taken care of"?

The recall was to replace the DOT-3 brake fluid with DOT-4 for certain Genesis production dates, but that does not completely solve the problem of valve corrosion in the HECU (made by Continental) of any existing vehicles that were affected. There have been many instances of brake failure even after the change to DOT-4 if the original HECU units are one of those affected.

At some point in the Genesis assembly process, Hyundai starting using new HECU units that had valves not subject to corrosion. Those with the newer units should never have a problem.

In either case, you can give your VIN to any Hyundai dealer to see if there are any mandatory campaigns or recalls still to be performed on a vehicle, and they can check the status in their computers.

If you want to know what production dates have the older HECU units that are prone to valve corrosion problems, I believe that information is in this thread somewhere, or in another thread at least.

Thanks! Since it has 50k km and it's a 2012 that I just bought, I'm not 100% sure if it's been using the wrong oil this entire time and if I could run into issues. One dealer said that when there's a recall they like it cause Hyundai pays them to do all the work so they wouldn't say no to it, that being said, that's not a confirmation that the job was done so I'll check with the manufacturer, I'm not even 100% sure my car is part of the recall.

Hopefully, they put in brake fluid, not oil.

I don't think the 2012+ models are included in the recall (not 100% sure), because at some point they improved the valves so they don't corrode. I think the dates recalled are included in this thread somewhere.

Any dealer can find out if there are any mandatory items that need to be fixed on your VIN using Hyundai computers. Not all mandatory "campaigns" are recalls. If there is a recall, then Hyundai must contact the owner. But there are some mandatory campaigns that only get applied if the car is brought to the dealer for some other reason (or in inventory).

My 2012 5.0 started having brake problem in September 2016. First time on off-ramp down slope. Pressed pedal & it went to the floor. Instinctively I pumped it a couple times & was able to stop safely. Thinking it was a fluke, I gave it no more thought until it happened 3 more unpredictable incidents. Made an appointment with my CarMax store for a Thursday 9 days later. The next day as I was leaving work the pedal went to the floor as I went to engage reverse! No more tempting fate. After a couple weeks at Hyundai dealer; speculated the power-booster was the problem. 5 weeks later Booster in but no fix. Called in a factory specialist. WTH

I now have 83,000 miles on the car and I started experiencing the "long brake travel" two times in the last two months. Each time the issue went away when I stopped and then restarted the car. Very scary feeling when it occurs. This past weekend the failure occurred again but it took me several restarts to get the brakes to go back to normal. The car is at Dennis Hyundai of Easton in Columbus, OH. Of course, they have not been able to recreate the issue so I know I'm in for a fight. I have filled a complaint with Hyundai USA and they have been in contact with the dealer and I have also filed a complaint with NHTSA and have also written them about the issue asking for help. We will see what happens but I'm not going down without a fight...

Why are you fighting? Have they refused to do anything? Have they tried to find the problem?

Most times you get the best help by being a gentleman that a guy ready to fight. If they are ignoring you, the complaint is legit. If they are trying to help, try to help them help you.

Yes, I know the feeling of having brakes go out, I understand your concern. Scary to push the pedal an nothing happen.

Be persistent. Don't fight if they are trying to help you.
