Synthetic Oil

I recently purchased a 2015 Genesis Sedan 3.6 AWD (Canadian Vehicle) and am due for my first oil change. What oil is everyone using? If going the synthetic route, I understand the dealership recommends/stocks Castrol Semi Synthetic. Historically, I have used Mobil 1 full synthetic on my vehicles and am not familiar with Castrol Semi Synthetic. Is there a significant difference between these oils? What oil change interval is recommended when going the synthetic route? Many thanks and happy holidays!

Direct injected motors are very hard on oil learn to change it yourself it is scary the first time but after that you will be a pro and you will know what was put in it . save your receipts and document the miles and only use Hyundai oil filters which is really a filter media you remove and the housing stays on the car. I always used mobil 1 now I run Pennzoil ultra full synthetic. but read up on it. MAC

I have used Valvoline synpower for years. My Genny has 144,000 miles on it now and never has used a drop of oil. She still runs and sounds like new. Go with Synthetic if you are going to keep you car to 100k or more. I use Mobil 1 0-40 in my Mercedes, but for the Genesis I use Valvoline synpower, however, Penzzoil , Mobil 1 and Castrol all make very good synthetic oils.

if you read up on that link http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/motor-oil-101/ you will find that not all synthetic oil is synthetic . And the new Pennzoil is made out of natural Gas real cool. The sticker under the hood see photo recommends shell helix (not available in North America) and Quaker state. I have always used Mobil 1 in all of my cars and have been pleased with the results. The Hyundai dealer I'm planning to use for maintenance recommends a semi-syn oil. I'm not all on board with the idea. Thoughts anyone?
For the 5.0 the Manual recommends (for Texas temperatures) either 10W-30 or 5W-20 or 5W-30. Any of you other hot weather folks have any recommendations?

I think the key point here is that changing the oil frequently is the best policy for these new Direct Injection engines. Any good quality Dino oil changed every 4000 miles is probably more than fine. If you live in climates that experience High Heat or Low Temperatures, then using a Semi-Synthetic or Full Synthetic will give you an added degree of protection.

I am a huge believer in Mobil-1 as it is reasonably priced (for a Full Synthetic) and the additive package in their oil has a number of features that are beneficial - keeping engine clean, keeping seals supple, suspending contaminants and fighting acid build-up among them - and is therefore to me worth the extra cost. That is not to say that other Full Synthetics aren't equally good I just happen to have had very good experience with Mobil-1.

If you monitor your oil quality (I don't) then you can extend oil changes far longer with a Full Synthetic, which helps justify the added cost. As noted previously, the 'Bobistheoilguy' website and forum can provide more information on this subject than anybody can fully absorb!

Oil is as good as it's weakest component. What good is it if the dino part of your oil beaks down and forms sludge? I view it like dating a "semi-virgin". (apologies for the misogynistic comment, but it was to make a point) It's a marketing term used to charge you a premium for a non-premium product.

If it were my car, I'd be using 100% synthetic. Who's your dealer?

Dealer = Oakville Hyundai...Got my oil changed today and they did have full synthetic as an option (Castrol Edge) which I went with...Cost was $94 + taxes...they also updated the navigation software apparently to address an issue with Sirius/XM radio.

I bought the car from Freeman but will be using Eckert for service as they are a lot closer to me. I met with the service manager and inquired about Genesis certified techs. He said they have 3.
Your ideas and logic seem rock solid to me. Unless I learn of some real compelling reason to use semi-syn I believe I'll stay with Mobil 1. Now to address the viscosity issue!

Unless you plan on visiting us here in the 'North Country' over the next few months, I would go with 10W-30. A full Synthetic like Mobil-1 will still provide protection above & below the normal temperature range for that viscosity.

Just a heads up Kids I had different oil in my FJ cruiser then recommended by owners manual . I took my truck in for a funny noise I could hear in between parked cars, anyway the dealer told me you have the wrong oil in your vehicle and noted it on my invoice. They can test it on the spot, just saying put what it says on your oil cap until you are out of warranty. Mac

Mac raises a very interesting point. The oil cap reads 5W-20 with the note See Owner's Manual.
The OM recommends (for Texas temperatures) either 10W-30 or 5W-20 or 5W-30.
All very confusing for a non-tech type like me.

If you are concerned about keeping to the OM guidelines, use the 5W-30. I think 5W-20 is a little light for your climate.

Has anybody noticed that now the V6 now uses 7.3 quarts of oil versus 5 and a half like on my 2011? I guess some of the engine changes for the 2015 required the need for more oil. My 2011 wasn’t a GDI so maybe the increase was made in 2012. Anybody know?

I have always used Mobil 1 Extended Performance and changed the oil around 7-8k miles(mainly because of the filter). My 2 previous vehicles had over 140k miles with no oil consumption. During the winter here in Ohio I use 0-30w and during the summer I use 5-30w. Just keep an eye on the dipstick during the first couple of oil changes to make sure it is not getting dark. The engine only works as good as the oil lubricates.

P.s. Yes buy your oil at Walmart like another member mentioned. $40 on oil and $10 on a filter will save you lots of money down the road.

I'm also gathering that people generally don't wait the recommended 7,500 miles for their next oil change? I used full synthetic on my old car, and even changing it yourself that stuff can get expensive! That was when oil prices were through the roof though.

Oil is cheap compared to 8,000 to 15,000 for a new v6 or v8 engine in a late model car. Also using OEM filters is the best way to go unless you do the research and find what after market filters are made by the exact same manufacturer as the OEM filters and are the same filter but boxed for an after market brand.
