  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have a 2011 4.6 and am wondering when should I get an oil change. I've had the car for a little over two months, bought it at 21,200 miles and I'm now at 24,061. What I'm asking is, do these cars require oil changes every 5k miles? My old honda was every 3k.

Also, would you recommend getting it done by the dealer or by my trusted mechanic whom I've always gone to?

I have 156,000 miles on my 2011 Genesis 4.6 with tech which I purchased new. Absolutely the best car I have ever owned, and I have owned Acrua, BMW, Chevy, Mercedes, Toyota, Mazda, Oldsmobile, and Ford. I change my oil and filter every 5,000. I always use OEM filters which is important with this engine and I use Valvoline Synpower synthetic oil 5w30. Its the synthetic oil I prefer but Mobil 1, Pennzoil Platinum, Castrol Edge are all very good synthetic oils. BTW, my Genesis still does not use any oil between changes. Some aftermarket oil filters have caused problems in the Hyundai 4.6 V8. Also I recommend changing the transmission fluid at about 60,000 miles. and every 60,000 after that. I have had my transmission serviced this way and it is still shifting like new.

The normal service interval for engine oil is 7500 miles, and for severe service conditions (described in owners manual) it is 3750 miles.

So long as your mechanic uses the OEM filter, and you keep all the documentation, it is fine if your mechanic does it. I would highly recommend using a synthetic oil such as Mobil 1, which is very reasonably priced at Walmart in 5-quart jugs. Personally, I would recommend 5W-30 even if Hyundai recommends 5W-20.

Thanks gentlemen. 156,000 miles bro? You must have a long commute to work. But hey if she's (Genny) still running like new what's 156k miles? Lol

Does 2011 4.6 alert you when oil change is needed? As in does maintenance light come on?

When was the oil last changed in your car and what oil was used. If you don't know, the time to change oil is now.

I'm using Mobil 1 5w-30 and changing at 7500 miles. The oil analysis from each change has been fine and the oil could have been run longer. However, warranty................

Why? Both will protect the engine more than enough at operating temps and the lighter oil will actually be (slightly) better at cold/warm up temps during first starts where almost all of the engine wear actually occurs.

Because based on my experience reading this forum for more than 6 years, members seem to have better luck with 5W-30 on the Genesis, including but not limited to, less engine noise.

After spending a lot of time researching the issue, I have come to the conclusion that auto manufacturers specify 5W-20 to increase their CAFE MPG ratings, not to prolong engine life. If mileage is a major concern, there is always Mobil 1 0W-30.

One interesting fact is that starting in 2015 Hyundai now recommends 5W-30 for the 3.8 V6, while still recommending 5W-20 for the 5.0 V8. Previous to the 2015 model year, Hyundai recommended 5W-20 for both Genesis engines. The 3.8 V6 GDI engine is pretty much the same as previous years as far as I can tell, so it is interesting that they changed the viscosity recommendation.
