So... Been a while since I posted. I took my car in to the dealership about 2 weeks ago, suspecting an oil leak. There was also a faint burning smell coming from the engine compartment that got a bit worse if I engaged in any spirited driving.
I dropped the car off on Friday morning and received a call back on the following Tuesday. The service guys inspected the car and found oil leaking from the bell housing area. They suspected that the leak was originating from one of the rear seals. In order to gain access to this seal, they had to take out the transmission.
Turns out the seal was fine. They used a bore scope to inspect the back of the lower intake and found a puddle of oil in the valley of the engine. They also noticed a cover plate on the back of the engine was covered in oil. After removing this plate, they discovered a leaking gasket. They replaced the gasket and reinstalled the transmission.
This took about 12 days to complete. I went in to pickup the car and the leak was fixed and the burning smell is gone. I did notice that two of the wheels on the right side of the car had small chips on them. I brought this to their attention and they held on to the car for one more day to take a look.
The dealership ended up replacing both wheels, no questions asked, and I picked up my car the following day. More on that in a second.
I had both recalls done while the car was with the dealer - for the rear tail lights and also the new Continental tires. I must say, the tire is definitely an upgrade. Not only did this remedy the flat spotting, but the ride is noticeably smoother - at any speed, and especially right after starting.
The dealer put me in a Sonata to start with - and I was happy with that. 7 days into the repair I called for an update and also to let my dealer know I was attending a wedding that weekend. I asked them for a Genesis to take to the wedding and they agreed. They even gave me a 5.0 Ultimate, which I drove until I picked up my car a week later. I have to give a shout out to Michael Ball and McCarthy Olathe Hyundai. If you are in the Kansas City area and want to be taken care of, pay him a visit if you are thinking about buying a Hyundai. Mike and his staff are all top notch.
So, in conclusion - I have to admit I was a little surprised at the level of service I received, especially when they replaced two wheels without even blinking. I was used to the "average" service experience that you would expect from Hyundai and this was definitely not that. I really think Hyundai wants to complete with the likes of Mercedes, BMW and Audi. Will they have to separate the brands to do so? Remains to be seen but the experience was very positive overall, considering the circumstances.
If my car wasn't new and under warranty I'm pretty sure this repair would have cost about $10K.
Anybody else have any issues with an oil leak on the 5.0?
