  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Crushed oil filter

I think this post comes closest to explaining the "crushed filter" mystery.

On the 5.0, there is a filter post in the filter housing affixed to the engine and another post in the end cap which screws onto the fixed housing.

If the filter is not precisely aligned onto both posts - it will be crushed. Probably one should slide the filter onto the end cap post and then screw both components into the filter housing - with a small prayer that the other end of the filter perfectly aligns and slides onto the filter housing post.

On the 2015 5.0, at least, this process is somewhat facilitated by the fact that the filter is almost "square" -- i.e., it is 3" tall, and 3 5/16" in diameter. The taller the filter - obviously - the harder it is to align the filter on both posts.

All in all, it is a sorry design. If you had your car upside down on a bench, it would be one thing. But working on the floor, it's a bear. Maybe that's the reason, on my car, they hide the whole thing with two splash panels and lots of push pins.

*** I'm assuming from the relevant posts in the thread that the filter mounting procedure is about the same for the 4.6 and the 5.0. And, on my car, at least, no matter who makes the filter - that baby is gonna get crushed unless your aim is pretty good before cranking down the filter cap.

Canister oil filter systems are on many cars and some systems are much more complicated than the Hyundai. Use oem filters and there is little chance of a problem.

Never said it was complicated - just a design prone to user error.

Other cars? Well, my Sonata's also use a cartridge type system (cannister, if you prefer). And, they incorporate a spindle inside the filter, and fastened to the filter cap, which runs the length of the oil filter, thereby insuring perfectly proper alignment when the filter cap is re-installed. When you torque the cap down, you know that both ends of the filter are exactly where they should be. It also doesn't hurt that the assembly is on top the engine. Hard to screw it up. Oem filters? You could use filters from TimBuckTwo - no way they would get damaged unless the dimensions were wildly out of spec. I wouldn't expect a TSB on non-OEM oil filters anytime soon.

Getting the filter properly aligned on the Genny 5.0 between two separate support posts (when you're on your back) and then re-installing the filter cap, is without a doubt problematic - even though it might be considered simpler than the Sonata design.

When I changed my first 2 filters, had the crush filter incident, now I take out that 5 or 6 MM plug screw on the bottom of the oil filter housing, I clean out the engine block side, and the removable housing, I push the filter all the way back in the engine block, notice the filter will tip down, not lining up with the tube in the removable part. So I push the filter up (thru the plug screw hole with the allen wrench) and start screwing the exterior housing in, making sure I don't feel any resistance till it's all the way in. Torque to spec. Now when you take this filter out it won't be crushed. 2013 5.0 R-Spec
