  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Ok, so I REALLY REALLY want to love this car... bought new in Jan 2013, I have put 56,000 Miles on it, and I have SHAMED many a mustang, camaro, etc. etc.

First Warranty claim - the service bill came to over $14,000 thank god it was under warranty. Nav issues, cruise control, broken gears in the sun roof. etc.etc.

Second Warranty Claim - BLOWN MOTOR - motor spun a rod bearing and locked up SOLID, as in burn up a starter locked up. Stranded on the side of the road with two kids. Replaced with a new short block. That wasn't too bad... only took 3 WEEKS and they gave me a sonata rent a car. Service manager said the short block alone was $8,000 + labor, I'm guessing $10,000 all in?

Latest Warranty Claim - Shot Alternator, leaving me stranded in a really crappy part of town as I waited an hour for roadside to show up. Here's the kicker for all you Eqqus, R-Spec, Tech Package, and other owners that use the same alternator.

IT TOOK THEM A MONTH TO GET AN ALTERNATOR!!!!!!!!!!! How in the World is this even possible in this day and age???

Then I get the car back, and they didn't even TOUCH the other laundry list of stuff, you know, the windows buttons that wont roll up, the sticky console buttons, the gear shift that the service guys scratched up the last time that they had it....

What a Joke... Its an awesome car, they just didn't get SO MANY things right, and it just keeps going and going.

I will tell you, based upon my experiences, I will NEVER buy another Hyundai as long as I live.

Oh almost forgot, when they replaced the short block, they had to replace the sunroof AGAIN, and then all the interior lights went out...

I believe for the lemon law to work, it has to be out "for the same thing" at least three items, plus there are other stipulations.

I've been in contact with the dealership, to see what there response is going to be.

Until then, I'll just do my best to advertise to entire world through social media what I think about the vehicle, the service and the responses.

I figure between forums, facebook, google +, twitter, etc. I ought to be able to tell between 20 and 40 THOUSAND people what I think... should be good cheap advertising for Hyundai.

Lemon laws vary by state, but it is "usually" based on the total number of days in the shop.

The early 2012 GDI V8 engines are known to have problems, and since you "have SHAMED many a mustang, camaro, etc," I am not surprised it blew up.

I am sorry you are dealing with all of this - it would definitely be worth looking into the Lemon Laws to see if you have a case.

Shaming cars on occasion should not mean that his engine is more likely to blow up....
Come on, an engine should be able to take punishment from time to time. Doing a 30-60 pull or launch occasionally is not a big deal. Driving the car hard daily and tracking it or taking it to the drag strip could result in premature mechanical issues, but not the occasional roll race.

An engine "should not" burn oil either, but many of the early 2012 5.0 GDI engines did, and no telling what other problems they had related to that.

Your right Mark;

I should have never done such a thing. You should never, never, never, never push the throttle to the floor while moving, and certainly not while driving at 45-60 mph on a clear highway.

That advertised 426 hp is only there for advertisement. Look in the owners manual, it says, never exceed 65 mph and never never push the throttle to the stop.

Give me a break...I've never had the car on the track, I've never drag raced it, I changed the oil using full synthetic, and always filled up with 93 octane. I did my part... the car constantly has something wrong with it, and the service sucks.

Where's that in the advertisement?

to me this was you implying that the engine trouble is directly related to his 'shaming" of other cars. The known issues were an ancillary cause or a contributing factor but his driving of the car in these situations is what caused the engine to blow up.

I seriously doubt a spirited pull or two was a contributing factor to the engine issues. Had a 70 year grandmother purchased the same car the same issues were just as likely to occur - his driving and "shaming" of other cars, as long as it was not how the car was normally driven, are of little relevance.

Agree. The occasional highway pull or launch is not relevant in what happened to your car. I hope it gets resolved - check out a 2015 5.0.

Well. At least if you want to buy another Genesis in the future - it won't have to be a "Hyundai". And perhaps it won't be at a Hyundai dealership either...

The thing that kills me the most out off all of it....

WHY DOES IT TAKE A MONTH TO GET AN ALTERNATOR???

These things are the simplest fix in the world, and I could have done it in less than 30 minutes myself.

Why does it take a month???

I'm not sure, until I checked here, I had no idea this was an issue. I'll check this evening when I leave the office.

Sorry guys, I was wrong.. purchased 11/2012

Build date Sept/1/2011

Why does it take a month???
On a 2004 Acura I purchased new it took about two months to get an AC compressor. I just enjoyed the new loner Volvo which I put about 3000 miles on.

They have to get them from Hyundai Motor America, who in turn gets them from Korea. Maybe they only ship spare parts once a month, and didn't want to do a separate shipment for the alternator. Maybe Korea ran out of them and had to order them from its own part manufacturing division, or an outside vendor.

I don't recall ever seeing a post on this forum since 2009 about a bad alternator on a Genesis.

It is not my job to tell people what they should or should not do. You may be right that the engine should not have failed, but it did. Given that the early 2012 engines had known problems, driving the car hard may have exacerbated the problems and caused a complete engine failure.

I did not imply which is the direct cause or which is ancillary cause. I think you are being overly sensitive and paranoid.

Some indication from the OP's original and subsequent posts that the service department might have not been among the best. But it would be interesting to know whether this R-spec had the bad ring problem and the OP just ran the engine low on oil. That would certainly lead to spun bearings. I am assuming the service techs would have been looking for causes and that one would be hard to overlook. Combined with street racing that would certainly stress the engine enough to cause trouble.

We also don't know the cause of the long delivery time on the alternator. Was it ordered on time, or late, or at all? Was everyone out of stock? Reordered? Don't have enough to go on here.

Skipping his "laundry list" of issues seems to blow back on the service manager. I might try another dealer or shop next time.
