  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

For those 5.0 owners who got the free tires that went with the Conti Pros, have you noticed that these tires (tread width) are an 1" narrower? Fronts are 8.2" vs 9.1" and the rears are 9.2" vs 10.2" on the Hankook's.

How can that be. The sizing is the same as before. Our rear tires are 275/35 19. The 275 designates it is 275mm wide. If it were 1 inch narrower it would be designated as a 250/35 19 since 25mm is close to 1 inch.

Not making sense what you are saying.

Tires with the same section width can have a different tread width. If you compare several tires with the same section width on TireRack, tread widths can vary by almost an inch.

I misread, I thought overall width not tread width. No issues with me regarding a narrower tread width which I did not notice by the way.

i know tires can different in shape slightly even with the same size but that is a big difference IMO... contact surface area is now reduced

Not sure where you got your info from but I checked to see. I came up with 0.2 inch narrower tread width on the new Contis. Did some more searching on the popular brands in the same size and they vary by no more than 0.2" in tread width.

Continental ProContact TX: 8.2"/9.2"
Continental ExtremeContact DWS06: 8.3"/9/6"
BFGoodrich G-Force Comp-2 A/S: 9"/9/7"
Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric All-Season: 9.4"/10.6"

This is just a sample of some of the tires available for this car (5.0 Ultimate RWD US version) on TireRack. The ProContact TX is the only Grand Touring All-Season tire listed for this car; the rest are all Ultra High Performance All-Season. The Goodyear Eagle F1 is a huge difference (> 1" front and rear). I pulled up the Grand Touring Summer tires, and while I'm not going to list them all here the differences are similar.

Michelin Pilot Sport A/S: 8.5", 10"

I am very happy with these.

Here is a snap shot from Tire Rack comparing the Contis to the nearest Hankook to what we had on our cars. Where my car is parked at work I can cleary see a big difference in the width of the tire compared to what was on the car. These tires are at least an 1" narrower than the Hankooks that were on the car. I am also noticing that the flat spotting is much worse (more pronounced than the Hankook's were. It still goes away after a short period of time but in 70-80 degree weather, the Hankooks were smoother.

Here is a comparison to the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3's:

You are not comparing the correct tires as the new Ventus is totally redesigned and yes the tread is much wider than the norm on those.

Check out the spec on this tire which Hankook Ventus S1 Noble 2 as originally found on our car. Still a 275 however this is a 40 and not 35 like the discontinued model. As you can see, the tread width is 9.4 which is almost the same as the Continentals. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...ewall=Blackwall&partnum=74WR9H452XL&tab=Specs

My head is about to explode. On top of that I'm a slow learner. Could someone refresh my memory about the exchange protocol established by HMA?
Are we limited to the Continental?
Must the tires be installed by a Hyundai dealer of can I have this done at Discount Tire and submit the receipt to HMA for reimbursement?
If tires can be installed by a dealer other than a Hyundai dealer, I assume there is a maximum per tire that HMA will reimburse. Anyone know what this max. is?

Please forgive me for asking these surely redundant questions. I'm having severe vision issues and can't bear to dig through all of the threads on the subject.

Thanks!

Officially, the dealer will swap for the specific Conti's listed. It's well documented in dealer bulletins posted here. There have been those who have posted here that have been able to go to Discount Tire and get another tire model for a premium. Your mileage may vary. I am still waiting for my swap and will likely just take the default Conti's - it's a lease and does not seem worth it to pay anything extra, especially if I elect to turn the car back.

Better yet Midnightsun, is there anyone on here that still has the original Hankooks on their 5.0, that can run a tape measure across the width of the tire and let us know what they measure? These tires looks visually much narrower to me.

Timing could not be better as I am putting on my summer wheels/tires today. I have both sets in front of me and just snapped a photo. You are absolutely right. The Hankooks are in fact 1.25" wider then the Conti Pro Contact TX. The difference is huge. Now we must consider the Hankooks are not on wheels or inflated but these low profile tires do not stretch/deform very much at all. FYI, these are both the 275/35 19 rear tires. Hankook obviously on the left.

Thank You Midnightsun for the side by side pictures. I knew I wasn't going nuts. :D Let me know how your flat spotting is. I think the Contis are much worse than the Hankooks which I thought was why we got the new tires in the first place according to the letter we received from Hyundai.

Still, I can't get my head around the numbers. According to the Tire Rack spec sheets, the Hankook Ventus 1 Noble 2 at the respective sizes for our cars show a TREAD WIDTH of 8.4" and 9.4" while the Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06 shows a TREAD WIDTH of 8.3" and 9.6".
Ths make the rear tires a tiny bit larger (!) than the Hankooks. Yet the photo appears to show just the opposite.
Ideas anyone?????

I put a tape measure on both and the Hankook is definitely 1 1/4" wider. I am very surprised by the outcome just as you as I also went by "spec". Stranger yet is if you put a Conti front and rear tire side by side the difference is almost not discernible. As they say "a picture is worth a thousand words".

Just did some more comparisons

Conti front is 9 1/2" wide Cont rear is 10" wide

Hankook front is 10" wide Hankook rear is 11 1/4" wide

Bottom line is the rear 275 series Continentals are the same width as the front 245 series Hankooks. Talk about size difference! Good news is the actual diameter of the Contis is perfect for the speedometer calibration as the readout on the dash is pretty much spot on compared to GPS.
