  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Drove to Orlando Hyundai this morning and picked up the Winged Emblem and a paint stick. Richard, their parts guy gave me a super price (discount) on these items. He is my main man when it comes to parts.

Just for the heck of it, I asked what the cost would be to have them install the Winged Emblem. (Body shop would do the install). As much as I love most at the dealership, their body shop and Service Department has no idea what is involved with the install. They at first told me that the Winged Emblem would have to be "screwed into the trunk" and that the trunk lid liner would have to be removed. I informed them (very nicely, I may add) that they were wrong, and that it is a simple job to install the emblem. Needless to say, I did not have them do the job, and went home and did it myself.

2 minutes to put materials together. (tape, cloth, polish, GooGone, etc)
5 minutes to remove the Flying H, using WeedEater nylon line.
5 minutes to remove the tape and gunk still sticking to trunk with GooGone.
5 minutes to polish out the "phantom" Flying H from the paint.
2 minutes to clean with Rubbing Alcohol"
1 minute to remove backing tape from emblem, and place on trunk.

20 minutes total.

Right on the nuts man!

I have two questions, a) does the emblem line up correctly with the holes that are below the removed H, if not how do you fit the emblem. 2) The 3M two way tape on the back of the emblem seems to be recessed, how will it make contact with the lid. By the way I have a 3.8 Sedan.

The prongs on the wing emblem fit perfectly into the holes in the trunk used by the H emblem

I just completed my rebadging to the wing emblem. I highly recommend watching the you tube video that takes you through the entire process. The new emblem has a round prong and an oval prong which match perfectly to the holes in the trunk. It's idiot proof. I used dental floss to remove the old emblem. Removing the leftover adhesive is the tedious part.

The new emblem is pretty flush with the trunk so I pressed on the emblem for a good minute to ensure the adhesive was bonding.

If you do buy the emblem, make sure it it the rear emblem, not the front. Although they may look the same, they are different. They have different part numbers.

As said above, nothing to installing the one on the rear, once the trunk lid is cleaned up. Remove tape cover, line up the pegs with the holes, and press in.

For those who want to install the front emblem on the front of car, the emblem also has two pegs, but the car hood does not. Many methods of removing the pegs, but what I did was to cut the pegs off, using a narrow wire cutter, then snapping off what was left. (Many people use a dremmel tool). Look at photos of the emblem on the front of cars, so you can see where to place it. Then, my advice is to remove the cover of the backing tape, and with a water hose, wet both the tape and the hood of the car, and only then, place the emblem in place. The reason I say to wet the hood and tape is because if you do it dry, and you make an error in placement, you will not be able to readjust the emblem. If it is wet, you can still slide it in place. Once in place, wipe the emblem and hood dry, and allow the emblem to dry for a few hours.

Just like "Staples" stores says, "That Was Easy"!

Will this affect the strength of adhesion?

No. Once everything dries, it sticks the same as if you had put it on dry.

I did the same thing with my Lip Spoiler. Made sure everything was correct. Placed Lip Spoiler on trunk without removing the tape backing, just to get the feel of how the spoiler will fit. Then I removed the tape backing, wet the trunk and wet the tape (using a water hose), then placed the spoiler on trunk and I could still move it to get it into the perfect position. Once in position, I added more pressure, then wiped the extra water off the trunk and spoiler. Put more pressure on the spoiler and let it dry overnight.

If you try to install the emblem, (or the spoiler) without getting the tape wet, once the tape touches the car, there is no way you are going to move it for adjustment. (trust me).

I've been through many car washes, and neither the front emblem or the lip spoiler has come loose. That tape is STRONG stuff.

I re-badged today. It looks great.

I have a few tips:

I picked a warm summer day with the car in the sun for a while.
I used dental floss and a few other implements to remove the "H"

I started with the dental floss to loosen the edges.

The little "club cards" that the super market gives you work great to help pry the H off. I found that an oval card worked the best to push trough and under the H. You can cut one of the square cards and make it pointy (taper to a half inch at the widest point). It seems to be better able to slowly penetrate the glue, if you push all the way through the thin parts of the H. I also used a guitar pick to use as a wedge/shim as I worked my way around. Eventually, I was able get my fingers under and slowly pry away the rest of the H (go slow here, it is reported that you can break the H doing this).

Now the glue residue: this was where the real work was. I did not want to use any chemicals here, so I tried a few things:
- Car wash soap (not much help)
- Baking soda pasted (not much help)
- fresh lemon squeezed on to the glue (seemed to loosen it up a bit)
- elbow grease (this worked the best)

With the lemon juice to soften, I kept working the glue with a microfiber towel. Eventually it all came off. Then I neutralized the lemon acid with the baking soda (it came in handy after all). Then I rinsed and washed the area with car wash soap and rinsed again. Next I thoroughly dried the car and waited 20 minutes or so to make sure I was dry.

I removed the backing and pressed the wing on, holding tightly for a count of 100.

I applied some wax around the wing.

I think it looks great. If you take your time, it should come out fine for you too.

Baby shampoo mixed in with water (shake hard) works fantastic.

This is what I use to remove any adhesive left over form sticker on window prior to tinting them.

If I'm removing old film and reinstalling after the film is removed there is always more adhesive left over on the glass. I then fill my tint sprayer up and dump a bunch of baby shampoo in the unit, and then shake it up, and spray this on nearly anything, and it doesn't damage any paint.

Have some fun and remove the GENESIS logo from the rear of the car while you're swapping out the flying H. With nothing but the wing emblem on the back (I changed the wheel and steering wheel emblems to compelte the effect), it's almost comical how many people will wander around your car trying to figure out what it is. I point out this activity to my wife, who now also giggles when the car is getting checked out. Last week we were staying at the Pike's Peak Resort in Colorado and a guy who drove a 2009 Mercedes S-Class spent several minutes wandering around the Genny while we quietly watched the sunrise from our deck. Priceless. :D

Don't put the front badge on the front. Instead, put it inside on the dash.

This is just a suggestion, but it also helps to grab the attention of passers-by. Plus, I happen to like the front hood clean; it looks beautiful as is and the front badge doesn't add to the beauty in my opinion.

But if you have the emblem on the steering wheel isn't the one on the dash a bit of overkill?

I kept the original Hyundai "H"on the steering wheel.
