If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Some people on this forum have mentioned changing their oil at about 1000 miles. The manufacturer recommends 7500, and even my dealer recommended not doing an early first one (although they recommend 5000 interval).

So what is the justification for doing or not doing this early oil change?

The theory is that there might be some metal shavings in the oil on a new engine, so good to do the first oil change at 1000 miles. However, the oil filter should catch those IMO. But it is a hotly debated topic, that unfortunately goes back a long time to when engines were a lot different and manufacturing quality was different.

To me, the most important thing would be to use a full synthetic motor oil, and to use 5W-30 (if using synthetic) regardless of what Hyundai recommends (because they are only interested in EPA mileage ratings, and not engine longevity).

Mobil 1 5w30 is a popular choice, and is what I'll be using.

That's what I use. Mobil 1 5w-30 extended performance whatchamacallit. I still change oil at the 5500 interval though. Should I go more?

With Mobil 1 Extended Performance you could go up to 7500 miles or 1 year, whichever comes first. You could even go a little more, but you don't want to exceed the 7500 mile interval required to maintain the warranty.

I was hoping that I could but psychologically 7500 miles seems so long. My wife's Lexus GS 350 calls for oil changes every 10k! I grew up back when 3500 was the interval. These long intervals seem crazy to me but I know they are factory backed so (hopefully) they are ok, right?

Personally, I would stick to 3750 for conventional oil (half of 7500). But a synthetic like Mobil 1 EP is so much superior to conventional oil that you can go longer. But it doesn't hurt to change ever 5000 or so if you want to.

Remember - new engines are a whole new ball game also - all of the cars I've purchased in the last 25 years have had near zero oil consumption, obviously better built.

And the name of the game is to use synthetics - I've used Mobil 1 since it's inception in 1975 and might even try it on my pancakes. The price differential, to me, is negligible, given the advantages.

I like doing an early change and I switched to Mobil 1 at about 2,500 on my Genesis. I find it interesting that all other new engines--boats, motorcycles, generators and tractors I have owned or maintained always dictate an early oil change yet cars don't. Honda motorcycles for example require the first change at 600 miles, but their cars say don't change the oil early. Most likely this is a marketing decision, people would say "what, my brand new car already has to go to the shop" if auto manufacturers required a quick change right after purchase.

At the end of the day it probably does not matter, I've seen engines last a long time either way but I like the early change for peace of mind. I do the changes myself so the cost is minimal.

and that's really the bottom line. I prefer Redline, but I will defer to Mobil1 any day of the week, why? it works. When you can tear down a motor with 200k on it and still quite clearly read the casting stamps on the rods? No brainer. As pointed out however, nothing wrong with sticking with the factory plan.

Dealer - "Your car does not require synthetic oil. We use Quaker State which is a good quality oil, and we add oil additives to improve the life of the oil."

Do you really want us to explain why the dealer said that?

If you purchase Mobil 1 synthetic at Walmart, a 5-quart jug is about $23. A 5-quart jug of QS conventional oil is about $14.

I was just responding to the poster asking about the dealer's business.

I thought he asked about the price of a synthetic oil change, versus a conventional oil change, if done at a dealer.

In the past, the few times I let the dealer change my oil, I got the oil at Walmart and brought it the dealer to use instead of their oil. But you need some way to make sure they use your oil in your car.

Exactly!

Me: "How much do you charge for synthetic oil change?"
Them: "Hyundai does not require synthetic....We use Quaker State....Oil additive...etc"

The vast majority of Hyundai owners buy their cars because they are less expensive than a comparably equipped Honda or Toyota. So cost of maintenance is very important to them. Obviously that does not apply to Genesis owners. So some Hyundai dealers may not even offer a synthetic oil change.

Honda and Toyota now specify synthetic oil for most (or all) of their new cars. They disguise it by saying 0W-20, which is only available as a synthetic.

Your dealer (saying they put in additives) is a liar or a moron.

"My" dealer has a whole brochure outlining the oil additive procedure. They advertise up to $4k reimbursement on any engine issues post warranty if you have them do oil changes with their additives.

So I doubt they are lying, however they may very well be morons.

I think they are lying. I know several dealers who provide a 20 year engine warranty if you do all the maintenance at their dealership. It is an original owner only warranty.

It is basically just a game of numbers, because they will end up charging you way more than it should cost for all the maintenance (not just oil changes) and would pay for the extra warranty. Plus, few people who buy a new car keep it past 10 years (the warranty provided by Hyundai).

BTW, $4K will not pay for a new engine. That will cost you at least $12K with labor. Unlike the "old days" most dealers cannot do a compete engine rebuild.

Hyundai does not authorize that any additives be added to the crankcase. They do recommend that fuel injector cleaner be used in the gas, and they sell Hyundai branded fuel injector cleaner at the parts department. It is the same thing as Chevron Fuel Injector Cleaner with Techron.

I have 2600 on a new 2016 Genesis Coupe and just scheduled an oil & filter change for this coming week; and I ask if I could bring my own oil (I was planning on Mobil 1 EP) and they said that I could ... but, that they would wait until at least 5,000 to change to Full synthetic; they recommend using Semi-Synthetic. I would be very interested in the thoughts from this forum. Thank you
