air filter change info 3.8 in pics

Thnx ntx_v8 for instructions with pics. Have you changed the cabin air filter? Any tricky Hyundai engineering in the use of clips or fasteners to be aware of?

Instruction is on page 7-36 and 7-37 of the 2016 manual. Looks like it is quite easy with no tool involved and no need to pull any panel. Watch for the airflow direction to place the filter.

I ordered teh cabin filter from Amazon for 20 buck, maybe a little less, I do not recall. I had my dealer change the engine air filter. They were very reasonable, at $30 for filter and install (compared to Volvo wanting to change my wifes cabin a/c filter for $85 buck and $60 for the engine). Could I have saved a few bucks, yes, maybe next time I will do it myself.

Cabin filters and air filters are the easiest DIY items, although the Genesis seems to involve a little more for air filters.

Amen to that. The engine air filter looks to be a pain in the a$$.
 
I got K&N filters for my 5.0 V8 and I was about to install them last night. Literally thought it was just remove the cover, throw in the filter, put back cover and be on my way. Nope, as soon as I saw that I had to remove the one bolt I just said another day. Won't be until like a few weeks until I get tools from the girlfriend's dad.
 
It's very easy. Loosen the two bolts, the bar comes out. I think they are 12mm if memory serves. So easy I let my neighbor's kid do it. :)
 
Sheesh' whatever happened to spin the wing nut and lift off the cover!! LOL

I have found that if I take out the top bolt and just loosen the bottom one, I can swing the bar to the right to get it out of the way. Makes replacement much simpler as there is no problem aligning the bar with the 2 bolt holes.

Rock Auto has several filters for both engine and cabin. I got two of each to have them on hand and save on shipping. The engine air filter was exactly like the original and marked "made in Korea. I certainly will change the cabin filter more often now that I know how cheap they are and easy to change. My engine filter had 14,000 miles on it and had almost no contaminants.

My one experience with a K&N air filter was on an Olds Aurora many years ago and resulted in a sticky throttle and a light oil coating on the inside of the throttle body. Never again! You may also find the air filter test done by "Bob is the oil guy" to be interesting.

Amazon has it marked as incompatible and I sent a correction to them. They probably wont fix it.

Bumping an old thread. Just picked up a CPO 2015 3.8 coming from a 09 4.6. Was looking under the hood yesterday and noticed the stupid brace over the air intake. Came here to see if that in fact must be removed to change it, what a dumb design. And it's not like the V6 engine compartment doesn't have plenty of space to spare up front. Could've just moved the thing over 5" and ducted the inlet a bit farther.

Maybe some design engineer just wanted to piss you off!

I wonder about things like that. Is there a reason we don't see that causes certain parts to be in awkward places?

To add to this rant about the poor design decision about the airbox and chassis support location, you will have to remove both of those parts just to change out the headlight bulbs since the air boxes block the headlight bulb opening.

Not my most favorite design, but I do like that my engine has twin air boxes.:)
 
Hah, yeah...the 5.0 has to do it on both sides! It's not unusual in most cars nowadays to have to remove the airbox to get at the headlights, but it is an extra pain that 5.0 has 2 blocking it;)
 
The EPA is making life expensive for automakers. They are using expensive technology to make their cars fuel economy the best it can be. Examples are: Direct injection engines, the ability to cutoff some cylinders when power is not required, aluminum, magnesium and high strength steel for body parts, entirely closing the bottom of the vehicle for improved aerodynamics, turbochargers, taking out spare tires to reduce weight, electric steering, low rolling resistance tires, etc. If a better air filter exists they would be insane not to use a cheap fuel economy enhancer like that.
If you think you know better than everyone, go ahead and waste your money if it makes you feel better.

I assume that you are referring to performance air filters as being a waste of money.

Performance air filters like K&N work well to increase fuel economy by about 1-2 mpg(varies by engine), however I feel they also allow more fine dust into the engine compared to a paper filter which mean more oil changes due to the oil becoming more contaminated sooner in addition to the filters costing about 2-3 times more than a average paper filter. So performance filters are not a cheap option to gain 1-2 mpg in my opinion. Automakers have to find solutions that increase gas mileage, but at the same time reduce the environmental impact of the engines as well. Performance air filters only solve one of those problems, better fuel economy.
However, the additional costs of producing them(use more company resources) and adjusting engine maintenance( frequency of oil changes) to account for the extra dust that would enter the engine could be the deal breaker to why automotive companies do not add performance filters on every engine they sell.

Many automotive companies do upsell performance filter as upgrades(better power and fuel economy) for their popular/ performance car lines, but do not add them as a basic item option.

It actually does help with the environmental impact. You can clean and reuse them for the life of the car (10 years or so). In the past 8 years, I have replaced 12 filters on cars. I'm not very friendly to the environment but I see myself moving in that direction. I care more about animals than the environment. I'm not going to hold back in life to preserve something that is irreversible, we'll colonize Mars soon enough LOL
