  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Rear-View Camera Quality

Just picked up my 2016 3.8L yesterday, I noticed that the rearview cam in my Veloster Turbo was better than this. At night it's so dark too..
Anyway to make it better?

There's no way to improve the resolution or functionality that I know of...

I cannot believe this thread has 8 pages.

Talk about 1st world problems...

Staring down at a little fuzzy screen when you're backing out of your driveway is one surefire way to disaster.

But, some people just love lawsuits, it would seem.

It's not at all that fuzzy. And have you forgotten about what you did before backup cameras came along?

Turn head & repeat :D

Here is an image from my camera, taken with my phone in the car. The image is more than adequate for the purpose it serves. I had to reduce the image size, and I hope the picture doesn't lose quality in the upload process here.

Bottom line, there is zero reason to whine about the quality of the camera - it does it's job well.

Cadillac said that same thing about the V6 in the Cadillac CTS before they had a twin turbo option. "It's fine"... Not everybody wanted a 600hp V-Series race car for their mid-sizer - but a competitively powered V8 would have been nice.

I fail to see how this relates to the quality of the image of the rear view camera. Care to enlighten me?

A luxury company with aspirations to compete with the best should never say anything about their product is "good enough". Yes, the resolution of the rear view camera in the Genesis sedan is good enough. It's fine. But it's not competitive. That might be okay for the Hyundai Genesis but not so much for the Genesis G80. They need to be on top of their game the way Lexus was with their LS in 1989 if they want to run with the big dogs. Otherwise they're going to have a weak reputation like Cadillac does today - even with being in business for over 100 years and at one time being considered "the standard of the world". Because they let the bean counters make the decisions and "cheaped out" on too many little - but important - things...

Hello Genesis Motors,

I agree with you on the "good enough" comment, I disagree that the rear-view camera is on the top 20 list of things that need to be addressed on the Genesis though.

My camera is used less 1% of my time in the car, as an auxiliary system to my visual checks (over shoulder, out the side and rear windows), my rear parking assist and my rear cross traffic alert system. The camera clearly shows things down to the size of a mouse. Yeah, it's not Full HD or 4k, but it plays it serves its purpose more than adequately. The camera resolution is certainly not "important" from any logical standpoint.

If we are talking about things on the Genesis that are barely "good enough" I would put these things way higher on the list, because they affect safety and convenience much more often than the alleged lack of quality of the rear view camera:

  • Lack of "adaptive" function of the HIDs - which can be had on a $25,000 VW Golf but not a $50,000 Genesis Ultimate
  • Lack of Android Auto/Apple Car play on the Ultimate spec cars
  • Headlights are pointed way to low from the factory
  • Lack of ability to display/read SMS messages using the multimedia system (so people pick up their phone instead, even if they shouldn't)
  • Lack or rear seat USB or power ports
  • Excessive vibration from the wheels while driving and the A/C compressor while idling (my passengers have asked if I have the seat massage function set on due to this)
  • Lack of memory for the drive mode, ACC on/off setting and Auto Hold function and seat fan/heater
  • Grouping of the controls to the left of the steering wheel (trunk and fuel release next to safety features and the rear sunscreen control? Really?)
  • Dumb sound system design - Bluetooth sound doesn't automatically reconnect and sound levels vary dramatically between inputs; sound system buttons and A/C controls are same size and within 2 inches of each other
  • I could go on ...

Each one of these issues show a lack of detail and a striving for just "good enough" much more than the camera, and affect the safety/convenience of driving the car in much more dramatic and persistent manner. If Hyundai added a 1080p camera, the next person would complain that it's not 4k.

Hello Genesis Motors,

I agree with you on the "good enough" comment

Guys... you both know full well that this is actually a significant portion of their marketing strategy with these cars. It has always been a "90% as good as the other guys" approach... from the G1 through the G90 - and going forward. This has never been a secret and consequently you will never get everything out of it that you could from another... but you will get most of the stuff that matters, and save ~30%.

Lack of "adaptive" function of the HIDs - which can be had on a $25,000 VW Golf but not a $50,000 Genesis Ultimate

There are a lot of cars that cost more than the Genesis that don't have this. It is also available on other models from Genesis. It's a $5000 option on the 5 series. Or maybe you should have bought a Golf.

Lack of Android Auto/Apple Car play on the Ultimate spec cars

Also not available on other cars costing far more. Is available on the G90 and will certainly be available on future redesigns of the G80. It was also NEVER even promised for the G2 at all - yet Hyundai went above and beyond by offering it as a retrofit option on some models. A move that is completely unheard of in the auto industry. Yeah - sucks they couldn't make it happen on the Ultimates like mine - but good luck finding another manufacturer that would even attempt to offer future tech retroactively - especially for free.

Headlights are pointed way to low from the factory

A problem shared pretty much across the entire Hyundai line - and easily correctable in about 20 seconds with a phillips screwdriver.

Lack of ability to display/read SMS messages using the multimedia system (so people pick up their phone instead, even if they shouldn't)

Honestly - I don't think this should be a feature available for any car, period. If it is that damned important - either call me when I am driving, or I will pull over and read. This is a social issue - not a car issue. There are already too many distractions while driving. Having the car read to you is one that we don't need. Again - if it's important... call me. My car has bluetooth. Otherwise - you can wait until I can call or message you back later. This "on demand" lifestyle that we have adopted is simply too much.

Lack or rear seat USB or power ports

G90 has both. Future G80s will. It's also easy to add to existing G2/80s. Took me about 20 minutes to wire it in properly so the cord wasn't visible and cost me a whole $7.

Excessive vibration from the wheels while driving and the A/C compressor while idling (my passengers have asked if I have the seat massage function set on due to this)

There is something wrong with your car. Mine doesn't do this - even with the AC pinned. Smooth as glass, even when idling, and you can barely tell it is running. Your rims have been curbed or your wheels are out of alignment. Either way - you need to bring it in to address both issues.

Lack of memory for the drive mode, ACC on/off setting and Auto Hold function and seat fan/heater

Drive mode fixed in future incarnations & models (other Hyundais hold it, as does the G90). ACC and Auto Hold being disabled are DOT/NHTSA points wherein they must be reset. Is the pushing of a seat button really inconveniencing you that much? When I drive home in the evening - I have the vented seat on cause it is warm outside. When I get into the car in the morning it is cold outside and I want the heat on. What's it supposed to do - read my mind? Cause I sure don't want to go out and have a bunch of cold air blowing up my arse. :)

Grouping of the controls to the left of the steering wheel (trunk and fuel release next to safety features and the rear sunscreen control? Really?)

This I can agree with to a point. Where else would you like them to be put? Not like there is a whole lot of room elsewhere on an Ultimate to put such switchgear.

Dumb sound system design - Bluetooth sound doesn't automatically reconnect

Something wrong with your car - or more likely your phone. Mine reconnects every single time. It always did with the Note2 and still does with my Note5 and the wife's iFoney6. No issues.

and sound levels vary dramatically between inputs

You will always find this on almost every system - including home and computer systems - that try to jump from BT to file-based to line-level inputs. I have installed 100,000$ home theatres that can't match properly... but that is due to the source... not the head-end.

sound system buttons and A/C controls are same size and within 2 inches of each other

Yet are properly organized... temp control being closest to the vent and the first knob you touch when moving hand to the right of the wheel, being easiest to reach. Volume is under your left thumb anyhow... it was put there for a reason.

I'm going to let you re-read your last line here... then scroll back up and look at some of the things you have itemized & see what you think.

Yah....but how about the cheap plastic air valve caps used on the Genesis.... If I knew it had those I would not have bought this car :=)

You guys make great points and I can find a way to agree with all of these statements. There are more important things for Genesis to worry about than the resolution quality of the rear view camera. However, I do feel they should address it - in whichever order they best see fit...

No Offense but this is the STUPIDEST thread I have ever seen. I just bought a G80 after coming out of a 2016 Avalon and 2016 Maxima both with rearview cameras. The rearview camera quality in the G80 is TRASH. Anyone who says otherwise should be ridiculed, ignored and perhaps even banned for spreading lies to the contrary of reality.

I love the car, but for anyone to sit here and make as if the review camera quality is not utter and complete garbage, is very dishonest.

I could care less about the rearview camera, but it's nice to see a critical comment on something considered so trendy - hard to come by, rarely seen.

I agree, for a "luxury sedan" camera quality is very poor on the US versions. Especially knowing that KDM models comes with 360 camera…

I am glad we have such a wise, experienced and clearly superior-to-everyone-else new member of this forum, who decides who needs to get ridiculed, ignored and perhaps even banned from this forum.

I bet I can also guess with 100% accuracy who you voted for.

Maybe your lens needs cleaning, mine looks fine. More important to me is that it really works well in low light. Not cinematic, but good enough to see any critters, kids, bicycles, etc. That's the point, right?
