  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Rear-View Camera Quality

Maybe your lens needs cleaning, mine looks fine. More important to me is that it really works well in low light. Not cinematic, but good enough to see any critters, kids, bicycles, etc. That's the point, right?

This is what is so frustrating. Not everything in life can have an opinion. It causes unnecessary division and distrust among people. The only explanation of your view that I can think of is that maybe other cars besides the Genesis have poor cameras and that these are the only ones you have ever seen. But as I said before, I drove late model Toyota's and Nissan's prior to my getting a G80 and both of those cars have far superior cameras. This is not an opinion either.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
Fact: The resolution of the rear view camera is probably lower than other cameras in other cars.

Opinion: This does not matter much to me, the camera performs its function as it is. Would I be happier if it was higher rez? Yes, by a small amount, for 5-10 seconds a day.

Stop using common sense :=)

I think we've finally reached common ground...

On my UK version, the quality is fine, and even gives a great view at night with the reversing lights on. My white reversing lights are fitted into the US amber turn indicator, the part on the trunk lid. Do you have reversing lights?

Yes I have the reversing lights. I can't tell you what to consider fine or not, but if you want to see why this thread is 19 pages long, go to your local Honda/Toyota dealership and ask the sales person to show you the review camera on a new car. You will see why we are so disappointed with the camera on the Genesis/G80

It's definitely a "minor detail" - and one that we don't spend much time dealing with while driving. But there are lots of things that many of us will never understand. For example, me, I don't find anything useful about having high powered LED lighting inside a car. But there are people who seem to LIVE for it. Many people are SO into music and sound quality that they hear things differently than I do. I used to be BIG into loud music - especially "bass" (I needed to FEEL the music) - but that's not me anymore.

When Lexus came out with their high-end Nakamichi and Mark Levinson sound systems - I couldn't tell the difference between those and other brands. I STILL can't tell the difference between the picture on a high-end television screen over that of something you might buy in Walmart. And when it comes to smartphones - I never pay attention to what TYPE of screen it has or it's resolution. Whatever it may be, it's plenty good enough for me and I probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference between how black one screen is over another. But to other people, this makes or breaks their purchase decision.

For what it's worth, I DID NOTICE that the resolution of the backup camera in my Genesis wasn't as high as some that come in cheaper cars. I don't think I've mentioned it in any formal complaints about the vehicle - and had I noticed this before I purchased the car it wouldn't have changed my mind. But it IS something I noticed.

I hope this discussion can remain civil as these "minor details" are often more important (sometimes much more important) to some than others. If you're familiar with the saying, "One man's garbage is another man's treasure" or "Different strokes for different folks" --- or "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" - then you can surely continue to be civil.

Thank you...

And now page 10. Unreal. This thread should have died at page 3. GM - can you please put a fork in this one already? :)

I had a 09 and now a 16. In daylight the 16 is better as it turns with the car and is clear. The problem I have is at night. The lighting and clarity is very poor compared to 09.

I can see why some people are upset about the quality, but since it's my first car with a backup camera I'm okay with it. What may be a problem just with MY car is that the camera seems to lie to me.. If I trust it I don't end up parked straight, but I will test to make sure i'm not crazy.

Without reading back through all 188 posts.......
Has anyone determined if the output of the camera is the same as other cameras on the market? IE: power (+&-) plus composite video out. (2015 3.8 Ultimate)

Here's what I'm thinking.... I Love the BIRDS EYE VIEW (BEV) camera setups that are on the market. I'm wondering of I got one of the 4 camera BEV setups, that comes with a little consolidator box, break into the existing camera composite video line, and basically replace the single backup camera feed to the head unit with the output from the BEV consolidator box. Many of the after market BEV units come with builtin DVR and the software to stitch 4 cameras into a really neat view.

I'm bringing this thread back to life. I just purchased a pre-owned G2 with the ultimate package and the rear-view image is horrible. However, I read through all of the posts desperately hoping for a fix. None, nada, zilch...

Only one poor image was uploaded and nobody confirmed nor denied if that was good or bad. I would like to see what a good image is from people posting how good the camera is. Also, two people questioned if the camera can be changed out or upgraded. No one has responded as well. I'll continue my search for a solution and update shortly.

I'll give you my 2 cents. The quality on this backup camera is not quite up to the one I had on my 2013 Hyundai Azera. Having said that, it's good enough. It may be a bit lower res, and I think the refresh rate is a bit slower. (Perhaps 15 fps vs. 30 or 60) Bottom line, it's more than good enough for the 30 seconds I spend 2x each day backing up. I can see clearly enough to tell if I am inside the lines on a parking space, and I can clearly see objects in my path even if a can't make out every spot of dirt on the car behind me.

To compare your car to others to see if you actually have a problem, you can go to your dealer and try another car, or another option, go to cars.com and search for listings with multiple pictures. Most listings with 10+ pics show a view of the screen with the backup camera activated. At least you can get a decent idea of the quality of the image.

On another note.... this one is way better than the last couple of rentals I had, especially the Toyota Corolla.

I agree that the quality of the backup camera IS indeed good enough. And at this point in time, good enough is fine because Hyundai/Genesis needs to cut a few corners here and there to bring in customers. I don't mind playing Devil's advocate and seeing things from the other side of the fence either, however... On that note, yes - the quality should be higher because:

1. The quality is higher in the Azera. What happened?
2. Hyundai/Genesis is trying to impress people - and in the luxury auto world - the little things count.

Did they make a mistake by not having a higher resolution back up camera? To some yes. To some no. That's just the way it is - and the way it's going to be. Different strokes for different folks. I think we can all agree that the resolution of the backup camera is not a make it or break it situation. It won't cause people to walk away from a purchase...

Is 15 Genesis backup camera just low quality?

I have two other 2014 cars from other manufacturers and their backup camera is pretty decent even at night. Genesis's quality is like PS2 video resolution VS PS3 resolution. I couldn't believe how bad it was and looked for any plastic cover that may be covering the lense from the factory but there was none. Have you guys noticed it?
I know this 8s an old post but dormant makes an upgraded camera for the equus $120
