Genesis G70 Reviews

Love'em or hate'em here is TFL's "info" video:

WTF?!?!? They went against the embargo!!! Wonder what the consequences are?

What idiots.

They do it all the time. They just leave out their "impressions". They just list facts one could also get from the press release with pictures from the event. They seem to still get invited back to launch events so there really has been on impact.

Ah...caught that near the end :)

Ah...caught that near the end :)

They release these "everything you want to know videos" as teasers. Then after the embargo they will put up a longer driving impression video. They usually get some interviews with designers, etc. at these types of events as well (like that short clip comparing it to the Stinger).

a great example was the Honda S2000. most auto mags tested 0-60 in the mid 5's, but with a crazy ~7000+rpm clutch drop. owners reported closer to the 7 second range in 'real world' times by actual owners.

I worked for a guy that purchased an S2000 and only owned it for 2 months before getting a BMW Z3. Main reason was he said unless he drove the shit out of it he couldn't keep up with basic traffic flow lol

That was his one and only japanese car ever owned and he still thinks none of them have low end torque lol

In the video, they said that driving impressions were embargoed, so they would only show how the car drove (but not discuss it). Who knows what was or wasn't actually embargoed.

Its always the journalists "opinions" of things like how it drives (obviously), interior fit/finish, etc. that are embargoed. I would think Genesis or any other company for that matter would like tweets, instagram posts, teaser videos, etc. from folks that attended to build up the hype.

The embargos are supposedly put in place to allow everyone (from tiny to giant media outlets) a fair shake at putting together an article, video, etc. so that it can be released in the same time frame.

Correct. It's also done with things like video games. Because there is an embargo, the cars should be ready to purchase soon. Possibly next week after the embargo is lifted.

Well, seems like Cars.com broke the driving impressions embargo...

2019 Genesis G70 Is Legit, Bruh

By Kelsey Mays

July 16, 2018

Could Hyundai's new Genesis luxury division replicate the magic from its G80 and G90 sedans in its least-expensive car to date, the G70? I took to southern Maine, a corner of New England that's rife with antique stores, cottage rentals and lobster bars, to find out. I have no antiques to show for it, and the lobster is but a memory now. The G70, fortunately, is not.

Maine is overrun this time of year by summer vacationers, many of them tooling around in the luxury cars Genesis hopes to compete against. And the G70 should compete mightily, at least to the extent any sedan can in a market gone SUV. The G70 holds its own on the driving front — no small task in a class of sedans engineered for fun behind the wheel — but its greatest assets are the practicality and value many rivals hold in short supply.

Sufficient Driving Fun

The track portion involved an autocross course that Genesis set up at New Hampshire's Club Motorsports racetrack, then the track's main 2.5-mile, 15-corner loop, which boasts some 250 feet of elevation change. I piloted various editions around the autocross and a 3.3-liter G70 AWD on the big track. After all that, I can report the G70 is fun.

It's not buckets of fun like some of its best-handling competitors — the suspension allows a bit too much body roll even with sport-tuned hardware on the 3.3-liter car, and the steering ratio in all variants feels too slow for rapid direction changes — but it's otherwise balanced. The nose exhibits mild understeer as you near lock on the autocross or bomb into high-speed corners on the full track, but the chassis is reasonably neutral otherwise. With an optional limited-slip differential, steady gas application can slide the tail around a bit, and it doesn't move as erratically as the rear-drive Kia Stinger, which shares a lot of this hardware. (Kia is a Hyundai subsidiary.) The G70 is supremely planted on 100-mph straightaways and unfazed by rapid elevation changes. The optional Brembo brakes on our test cars handled 10 laps of hammering with little fade.

Back on public roads, ride quality shows a lot of polish with the base suspension, which is firm but comfortable. The sport-tuned setup is noticeably firmer; some may deem it too choppy, but it's controlled. Adaptive shock absorbers are optional with the latter suspension, but I didn't spend substantial time in a car thus equipped.

Props given to the 8-spd AT; not so much for the manual gearbox.

It's not the roomiest ship, however. The backseat and trunk are modest, even by class standards, and taller drivers may find insufficient knee space.

Hyundai really should have kept another 1-1.5" to the wheelbase.

Officials told me the brand hopes to get a committed dealer network of several hundred retailers by the first quarter of 2019, but it'll still be a mix of stand-alone facilities and showrooms tucked into Hyundai dealerships, unique decor and staff notwithstanding.

Genesis estimates pricing will start around $36,000 including destination charges and top out — with options like navigation, wireless smartphone charging, Lexicon premium audio and heated and cooled seats — around $50,000.

Seems about right (tho, would be surprised if the top trim 3.3T G70 is priced below the Stinger GT2).

Taking out variances in equipment/packages - figured that the G70 would start several thousand higher than the Stinger.

While the Stinger is larger and has a liftback bodystyle (which costs more to manufacture), the G70 is from a lux brand w/ the requisite lux brand service and amenities (which aren't available to Stinger owners), has a higher-end interior and a little bit more sophisticated suspension set-up.

Even tho the Stinger GT2 was priced a little high for the US market (better Canadian pricing), still figure the top trim G70 (which will have a 3 of features that aren't available on the 2018MY top Stinger trim) to be a couple grand more than the GT2.

That would only be about $4k less than the price of the G80 Sport AWD - which normally wouldn't be enough of a spread btwn the 2 models, but figure the G80 will get a price hike (even if it doesn't get a substantial one until the next gen model).

It will really be interesting to see what the Canadian vs American reviews are like. In general...CA's reviews were excellent. Nothing but praise...blah blah.

So far above...already sensing negative attitude. Hmmm.

So it's confirmed that there are 3 suspension setups: standard (all 2.0T), sport-tuned (most 3.3T), and adaptive (3.3T Sport).

Annnd it's gone. Article is unavailable now. Didn't take long I suppose, I expect someone may have gotten a little slap on the wrist.

I think when it comes to price, we need to look at the competition more than the G80. The G80 seems to undercut most of its competition by 10k+ and I think the G70 will need to do the same. I don't think it's crazy if the loaded 3.3T comes in at $49,999 which would undercut most of the competition by 10k+ as well.

The Stinger is in a class of its own - the GT2's only real competition (and it still isn't a direct 1:1 comparison) is the S5 Sportback and the 440i Gran Coupe which are both 65-66k loaded, so pricing it at 52k undercuts them by over 12-14k. A loaded 340i is around ~62-63k and a loaded S4 is around $63-64k. If the G70 is priced competitively like the Stinger seems to be, that puts it right around the ~50k mark.

We need to stop comparing this car to the Stinger and start comparing it to the cars it will actually compete with.

It's the 16th and the reviews are starting to post!

I'm watching the redline review on the 2.0T sport and I can't believe it-cooled seats and LSD are standard! I can live without the sunroof and don't even mind the leatherette. Also I love the wheels on the 2.0T sport! Thank you genesis.

Edit: Well it's not all sunshine... the omission of rear vents is ridiculous in my opinion-it's 2018! Also according to motor trend, the mechanical lsd is an option on the 2.0T sport. I was hoping to not have to pay for that. Oh well; you can't win them all.

MotorTrends' review article is up. 2019 Genesis G70 First Drive: Image is Everything - Motor Trend

I think the G70s going to be a great car for Genesis, but only after the pricing settles in. Both the Stinger GT2 and Alfa can be had for low 40's today. Fingers crossed the pricing and competition in this weight class happens fast...Daddy needs a new car!

We need to stop comparing this car to the Stinger and start comparing it to the cars it will actually compete with.

While I share the same sentiment - basically, that the Stinger's main competition set are the 4 Series GC and A5/S5 which are larger and more expensive than their sedan counterparts, don't think we'll see anywhere the same type of spread when it comes to price due to the G70...

- being a lux-branded vehicle w/ all the amenities that go w/ it (which are baked into the price)
- nicer/more premium interior
- slightly more sophisticated suspension bits
- not as decontented as the USDM Stinger

So can see the G70 ending up being more expensive than the Stinger (in particular, the top trim), but wouldn't be by much.

But then again, Genesis USA may decide to be more aggressive on pricing than Kia America.
