If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi guys,

What's my least expensive way to get a remote start for my car. I'd prefer to use the OEM fob and I'm aware of the yearly fees with the blue link.

TIA!

Pretty much comes down to two choices. Use BlueLink with your phone and associated charges, or get an aftermarket unit installed and use their fob as the original from the car has no function of it.

BlueLink is reliable and works where your phone works. Takes a couple of minutes to get out the phone, open the app, put in your pin. Pay a yearly fee, but you do get other benefits.

Aftermarket is pushing a fob button, decent reliability depending on location, easierst and fastest to use, no ongoing fees.

there are many systems that will interface with the OEM fob, Viper, Compustar, DEI , Clifford, etc.

however there are issues with using the OEM fob, every car make/model may or may not have these issues but you should be aware they exist.

  1. limited range of OEM fob, about 100 feet.. Viper range is 1000 ft. just as an example.. Some systems also have a monthly fee with phone app, so unlimited range.
  2. disabling of fob when engine running, many makes/models disable the fob functions if the engine is running, so if you interface the OEM fob to start the car (typically pressing the lock button 3 times), then you have to use the physical key to unlock the car when you want to get in, because the fob will get disabled once the engine is running.
  3. no feed back indicating the remote start engaged, most of the after market remote starters today send a signal back to their branded remote indicating the vehicle is running, be it a vibration or an LCD display.
  4. Lastly, most of the aftermarket remote starters will over ride the key sense (rfid) key features, they have to in order to start the car, typically they use a module that will tie into the keyless feature making the vehicle capable of being started without the OEM key present, this presents a risk in that the vehicle can now be "hot wired" or started without the factory key.

Thank you very much for the info!

I have a G80 Tech 2019 in Canada and the BlueLink system is not available … But it's available on the G70 model. It's very disappointing for a Tech model !!! Do you think that an update could make these services available?

If it is a software update it would be easy but you have to have the proper hardware. I'm surprised it does not have it, but you do have the option of a remote starter in Canada.

I could have paid a dealership or a garage to install a starter but at the moment I do not think there is an option for that in my Genesis.

Remote start using OE remote is now available in Canada for $446. I just got it installed yesterday.

It's not the most convenient thing to work with as it responds to button combinations. It's also only one-way although on the Genesis Canada website it says it's a two-way system.

I don't know that Genesis has a separate remote start system available for any of their vehicles. I know Hyundai does but not so sure about Genesis. It's not offered as an accessory, so I seriously doubt it. You'll have to look on the aftermarket side of the house. Be careful what you select and ask your Genesis dealer what they recommend. You don't want to add a remote starter system that Genesis doesn't approve of.

HOORAY..............
Just want to add a little more info about remote start, based on today's experience.
I had a simple aftermarket remote system added to my '16 3.8 2wd Genny.
Been studying it for weeks; kept hearing and reading of things I didn't want to accept: ie: there would be an anti-takeover feature, hardwired into the Genny, so I would have to stop the engine in order to unlock the car, then restart it after entering. Also: the flashers would have to flash continually, because that is hardwired into the car too. And some more I'm forgetting.
So then I visited and interviewed my 4th local installer.
It's all good; none of the bad stuff is true.
$277 later, I have an Avital 4105L installed; I have 2 small fobs with 1000 foot range; I can use either the Avital fob or the Hyundai fob to lock/unlock/open the trunk; I can start with car locked or unlocked; and it stays running when I unlock or enter.
You can't move the running car unless the Hyundai fob is with you when you get in, so I think theft is not an issue.
Where does all the misinformation come from?
Anyways, there's a little more info for everyone.
Wish I'd finished this journey weeks ago, but maybe others can try the same path.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
Does your hazard lights flash at all while its running?
Thats one downside of the BlueLink version....

No, hazard lights don't flash at all; DRL's in front and tail lights in rear come on and stay on; tails go out after takeover.

it's not mis-information. according to you, you are using the supplied remote start FOB, NOT the OEM fob, my specific post was regarding integrating the OEM fob into an Aftermarket system, which can be done and can cause the above circumstances to occur, Every make and model is different so it may or may not occur depending on the make/model.

I saw all of these issues with a 2005 Chrysler 300CSRT, and none with a 2010 Avalanche, and a few with a 2012 Camaro, all of which I installed an aftermarket remote start and had it integrated into the OEM fob because I didn't want to carry multiple fobs.

Sorry Mr Incredible.......I wasn't referring to you!
Referring to numerous posts on here and elsewhere suggesting the takeover feature, the flashing lights, the need to have doors locked to start, etc etc could not be defeated by OEM or aftermarket means.
And: the first 3 installer shops I visited who said the same things!
I think 2 installers said, to the effect: Honda and Hyundai, they're the worst"

as I said, depending on make/model these issues do occur, been there done that. going 100% aftermarket and not attempting to integrate into the OEM systems is always the easiest with the least problems because you are relying on only the aftermarket system to do the work.

when you try to tie the two systems together is typically where these issues come into play. I prefer not to carry a separate fob for such things so I will always try to integrate, or simply do without.

This system is $48 via Amazon and I might find an installer and give it a try. Paying $20/mo for Bluelink is ridiculous. I do like being able to start the car with Alexa in the morning but my car isn't parked so far away that I couldn't start it with a fob.

Keep us updated on your progress.

More fun info for all about the Avital install in my '16:
Reading the booklet, I learned it has a programmable aux function, they suggest for turning on rear widow defrost; the function is programmable from the fob so your get the function every remote start; you push a button combination to turn the function on or off; park lights flash a certain number of times to tell you status; all pretty neat.
I called my installer and asked about using this function for seat heaters (since they lose their setting when you turn the car off); he siad sure easy, come by anytime and I'll add a relay and a couple of wires for you. So this AM I went by, he installed it in 25 minutes, and said "no charge".
Love it; works as advertised; in the spring I'll press 3 buttons at 1 time to turn the seat heater function off.
The basic Avital has only 1 aux function; fancier ones have several; for instance he programmed my wife's convertible with one button top down and up from the fob.

REMIX: be aware you will also need a "Datalink" box (bypass module); mine cost about same as the Avital; my guy used one from Idatalink.
Let us know how it goes.

Blue Link is probably really not worth what they're charging me for how I use it, but, today what is. Just spoke with a Blue Link Rep today about my account. I'll re-new in April for, according to the young lady, $198 for the 2 packages required for remote start. Haven't really paid much attention what's included so I took a look today. I can start my car from my laptop or phone plus all the other functions associated with that app.
Got a kid that says "I swear dad I never went over fifty five". Set a speed alert on your laptop, if junior goes over the speed you entered you get a notification.
" Dad, I only went to Bobby's house 2 miles away". Set a Geofence alert, if junior goes cruising you get an alert."
" I had the car back in the driveway a 11pm. Sorry junior, I set a curfew alert.
" Are you calling me a liar, I'm a Valet parker. Sorry Valet person, I set a distance, you went outside of it, I got a message, you got caught.
I suppose if everything worked as advertised, plus all the other functions available, around 50 cents a day wouldn't be that bad.
