The 3.8 V6

This is probably going to be the most popular engine option throughout the Hyundai Genesis offerings.. It's got a great mixture of power and economy. With 306 horsepower, it doesn't leave much to be desired in regards to performance. It'll be a great competitor to the Nissan Altima Coupe and 350Z right out of the box - while the turbo i4 will likely need some modification to keep up.

For those more interested in the luxury experience of the Genesis sedan, it'll be interesting to see how NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) of this powerplant turns out...

I am all about...

..this engine in the Coupe convertible. Will buy one, and would even go on a waiting list for one in 2009 or 2010. Hoping that they are scheduled for marketing in the US ASAP.

I have a Mazda MX-5 Miata coming off a lease in June 2009, and am willing to wait a year for the Genesis Coupe convertible with the V6 as forecasted.

Welcome, Mike. So the convertible is due for 2011? Sounds good. Has anyone done any "chops" of a Coupe in convertible form yet? I bet it looks great!

Welcome Mike, well, I haven't heard anything about the convertible is on the pipeline. But it will be interesting. For, everyone knows, for a convertible to suceed, it has to be done right, otherwise it will end up with so many convertibles of the past that only created problems and complaints(I can't remember the names of those cars but). The convertible is one category where, more attention is needed in order to build, and being a Hyundai, who virtually have little to no experience in that field, they will have to find out some help from the experts and do some reserch first, unless they just leave the job to the company who speciallizes in dropping the top as an aftermarket work.

What I am wondering is whether a 3.8 turbo will be being ultimately offered. Prolly will become available as an after-market option, fer sure. At least... I hope! That could be so awesome.

I feel relatively sure that the after market suppliers will jump right into the fray with offerings for the V6 equipped Genesis Coupe. I would not expect Hyundai to offer a turbocharged version during the first production year.

I have read that Hyundai has larger displacement and Forced Induction options on the back burner for the Tau V8. I feel sure they have also played the "what if" game for the V6 engines as well.

Yeah, I'm pretty confident as well - that there will be a large aftermarket for the v6. Turbo, super charging, etcetera. And I've also heard a lot about forced induction and larger displacement from Hyundai for the Tau...

The company says the Coupe will be available by late 2009, with a V6 option reaching 306 or 310 hp, depending on whether using hi-test or low-test gas. Whether that's turbo'ed or SC'ed, I don't know. But you can pretty much count on a 300+ hp car. All Hyundai's major car show pronouncements have been consistent about that.....

I think that is right.... that the v8 would be made available.... over a turboed v6 like as not. And that would be something. I once had a Ford V8 powered British Sunbeam Tiger sports car.... and... it was really something.... a Corvette-eater.

Well, the Tau was developed with turbo and supercharging in mind. So it'll probably come eventually..

Just got back from some Genesis training at the district office. The Lambda II 3.8 V6 that is coming in the Genesis and Coupe is completely new. According to the training materials, "no parts are interchangeable between the two engines." The Lambda II gets its extra power and torque from Dual CVVT. Bore, stroke, comp ratio, etc are all the same. This engine has a "sonic chamber" mounted to the engine cover which absorbs and muffles engine noise to keep it from getting into the cabin. If you have specific questions, I will do my best to answer them.

Oh, I didn't get to drive it (yet).

As you probably know, horsepower = torque * (RPMS / 5252). So to increase horsepower, you either make more torque or higher RPMs.

The Genesis Sedan, from the specs above, makes peak power at 6200 RPMs. I'm betting the coupe just revs a bit higher and reaches the 306 or 310 at 6500 RPMs.

Plenty of competing V6s are making 300 horsepower or more. But the interesting thing is, the cheapest one is the Infiniti G35 at $32,000.

I'm guessing the Genesis coupe V6 will run around $25,000, since that's the price of the current 300 horsepower Mustang GT V8 coupe.
