  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Any of you have a headliner/sunroof noise issue?

Please keep us posted! Loose fasteners was the first sound that came to mind for me

I think we might be talking about two separate noises, because mine is definitely heat-related and sounds more like the water-bottle-crinkling described a bit further up this thread.

Also a bit late to prevent me from stuffing things up there, but I definitely haven't done any damage to anything.

I hear a little creak/pop when driving at a slight angle either leaving or entering my driveway.

Question/poll about this issue: Since some/many say this is heat related, how many with this noise and or sunroof issue leave your car in the sun during the day, at work or home, any day of the week?
Is it an extended time in the sun?
I park in a garage nearly all the time. Limited time in sun. I wonder what the duration of time in the heat of the day is required.

It’s definitely heat related for me, but opposite. I hear it more in the morning when after it’s been parked inside all night. I park it outside at work, but hear it less when I head back home.

I talked to my dealer service manager and the Platinum Tech and they do not believe it is heat related. I know mine isn't because I first noticed it in late April when temperatures were only in the 50s at best. They're saying that based on the construction of the sunroof frame (and components) it is most likely an issue with metal fasteners being loose. And they also DON'T advise stuffing material up there, as some have tried or suggested. Doing that could cause damage of some type which would affect your warranty. And IMO the reduction in audible noise in that case is nothing more than the sound being muffled. Which doesn't solve the actually problem. My service manager wants to reach out to the Genesis regional rep to see if this issue has been reported by other dealerships/customers. They understand my reluctance to remove the headliner. I am confident that if and when I leave the car there for a fix that they'll do it right. I am fortunate to have such a good dealership on the service end. They really want to help me with this, and get it resolved. I'll report more when I hear back from them.
look forward to hearing more on this (tho it is def heat related ;) )

Read my post again Dillon. Happens even with temps in the 50s. That is not hot/heat related. As someone pointed out, we are probably talking about two different issues. The metal/plastic creaking is what I have, and my dealer believes it is a fasteners issue, and not related to heat. On a day in the low 90s, my rattling noise stops after 15-20 minutes usually. Explain to me how that is then heat related. If anything, it should continue to rattle since the heat outside hasn't reduced.

So here's my theory at this point. Half of us don't know how to describe the sound. In my mind, a creak is more of a high pitched sound (like some door hinges) than a rattle, which would be a shaking/tapping sort of sound. I'm guessing that one set of these sounds is from the headliner (likely the creaking) and another set is from the sunroof assembly (likely the rattle). But hey, I'm not a HMA tech, so what do I know

I would have to say based on your description of the two, what I hear is a rattle then. Not a constant rattle but only occasionally when driving over a bump or entering/leaving my driveway.

Hope Genesis USA will come out with a fix for those of you who have a constant creak/rattle.

Hello from Kia Land. As noted in post 186 of this thread, the Stingers are having what sounds like the same issue, including mine. I have very similar symptoms, as the ambient warms up (or sun heats the roof), the sunroof becomes more noisy. The noise is best described as crinkling a water bottle, more or less a popping or sorts. For my car, the noise is reduced with the sunshade closed, noisy with the shade open and glass closed, noisiest with the glass tilted up, and a different kind of noisy with the glass slid all the way back. As for poking and prodding to aid diagnosis, it seems almost everything I touch on the roof makes noise of some sort so it's hard to nail down. Pushing the front edge of the glass up when tilted up creates a loud clicking noise, pushing up on the headliner at the edge of the sunroof surround on the passenger side makes popping noises, pressing other areas makes other noises. I also noticed some looseness in the sliding mechanism, when the glass is slid back, I can move the glass and it's attached parts in the track about 1/2 an inch front to back. I've made a poll in the Stinger forum to see if this has any relevant frequency and leads us to any solutions.

I've had my car with Kia 4 times for this issue. The first time in the winter, they "could not duplicate" which might be true. The second trip, they dropped the headliner, played with bolts, adjusted glass and added padding and thought they fixed the problem - they did not. The third trip I lost my mind (nearly) since the tech could not hear the noises coming from the roof even though it was clear as day (second ride along with him) and he said it's just the leather squeaking. I told the dealer I don't want him working on my car if he has no idea what he's looking for. The final trip, I dealt directly with the service manager and he seemed fair and respectful. He took the car out with a tech and they definitely acknowledged noises. They took another Stinger off the lot (new) and found it made the exact same noises. They forwarded their findings to an engineer that deemed the noises normal considering the ambient conditions (about 25 Celsius and sunny).

I definitely need to find a more ambitious dealer, but I am also closely watching this thread since I see that our sunroofs look very similar and our cars share the same chassis, thus there are some similarities that might lead us both in the same direction. I think there would be value in keeping an eye on our Stinger thread(s) for this issue.

I feel bad for anyone else dealing with this and I find it completely unacceptable that some of us get brushed off with the excuse that this is "normal." Like the Genesis, Kia is using the Stinger as a vehicle to endorse the brand's quality and what they are capable of. Although this noise is ultimately a small flaw, it undermines the overall quality of the vehicle and is not something I would be proud of if I owned the company.

Good luck to all of us! The first one to find an ultimate solution will receive a gold star.

Welcome, Stinger-friend. I wouldn't be at all surprised if both cars produced similar noises and had a common issue. I just dropped mine off at the dealership yesterday so let's see if they do anything about it. I explained my theory with the sticky adhesive in the roof and the service advisor seemed to be listening so... we'll see.

They "didn't have a Genesis loaner available" (I'm seriously wondering if they have ANY Genesis loaners period), so my ride for the moment is an aggressively lime-green Hyundai Kona Limited loaner. Not gonna lie, as ridiculous as it is, I actually think the car is pretty cool, and pretty sprightly with the 1.6T and seven speed DCT.

My wife has a 2019 Kona Ultimate, and loves it. I've only driven it a couple of times so far, but yeah, it is pretty sprightly. Nothing like the 3.3TT (LOL), but better than her old 2016 Tucson with the 1.6. The transmission on the new Kona is SO much better than the old DCT on her Tucson.

Keep us updated on how you make out with your dealer.

I'm actually really liking the Kona, and being a couple years out of my Miata I forgot how fun it is to chuck around a lightweight car (not that the Kona compares to the Miata in lightness). I will say that the G70 is my first turbo car and I've never noticed any discernible turbo lag, but golly gee before this 1.6T hits 2000-some RPM's there's nothing there. Also there's no substitute for hearing that burly TT V6 fire up, the 1.6 barely makes any noise at all! Naturally, my wife loves this thing.

As far as the creak/rattle, I got a call from the dealer on Wednesday. He says they believe that the sound is related to the grab handle assembly and NOT to the adhesive (his reference to the adhesive at least shows he was listening when I explained it to him). I'm not sure I agree with that based on my experience, but he said they were ordering some parts and hopefully it would fix it. We shall see... Until then, it's Kona-time for me.

Edit: One more thing I have to say about the Kona; this thing is shockingly commodious for such a small vehicle. As far as seat leg room, it really doesn't seem appreciably smaller than the G70. I don't know if that's saying something positive about the Kona or negative about the Genesis, and I know that the packaging on a RWD-based sedan is inherently compromised relative to a FWD-based SUV, but it's really quite surprising.

^ I really want to like the Kona.

Those massive black plastic things around the wheel wells are awful. Car only looks good in black...since they are hidden.

Front headlights are cool and sleek...but they then ruined the front with the massive fog light assembly. It’s 3x the size of the headlights. When you first look at the front...you’re polarized and confused on WTF is what :(

Lose both items...you got a hot little ride.

Please keep us posted on what the dealer replaces and how it worked. There have been several here who have taken their G70s to their dealer and at least one has had the entire sunroof assembly replaced. Don’t recall anyone just yet finding the actual root cause of the noise? Dealers seem to be fishing basically. Some could be waiting for parts to show up from Korea too. I’m hoping when 2020s show up maybe the factory has changed something and this issue is gone.

Honestly the black trim doesn't bother me, but if they lost it I don't think that would be a bad thing. About those fog lights, that's actually where the headlights are! The top things which look like the headlights are only the DRL's and turn signals. It's weird, but then again the whole car is kind of weird. I like it, but obviously I like the executive-rocket image of the G70 a lot more.

I'll let everyone know what they do and how it works when I get the car back. I'm not sure it has anything to do with the actual sunroof in my case, but rather the headliner. In any event, I don't care if they do a seance and sprinkle pixie dust on the roof as long as they can get rid of that god-forsaken sound.

Mine was rattling again yesterday, and it somewhat sounded at times that if coming from the front portion of the headliner, nearest the windshield. But....when I reached up and pushed up on the center part of the headliner about 2" to the rear of the sunroof, the noise disappeared. As long as I pushed up, no rattle. If I dropped my hand from the headliner, the rattled continued.

I haven't yet been able to take it to my dealership for a test drive. No action, just a documentation of the rattle and how I can get it to stop. No way do I want my headliner dropped without them knowing for sure what they need to do to fix the rattle.

I initially thought it was coming from there but I eventually determined that it was around the little ridge in the headliner directly in front of the grab handle. I can push it there repeatedly and it will creak like no one's business. Seem to be focused around that ridge and up to the leading edge where the headliner meets the window on the passenger side. Push around that area and see if you can replicate the sound.

Edit: When riding with a friend, I also realized you can make the sound stop by pulling firmly down on the grab handle.

I guess this somewhat gives you an idea of the headliner assembly. Hope they figure out a fix for the rattle soon as well as a fix for the weak adhesive around the bumper/headlights.

The grab handle should be easy to remove. Usually a snap off cover plate at each end and a long screw at each end will remove the grab handle. Would be interesting to remove it for several days and see if the rattle gets better, worse or no change?
