  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I'm at a loss...

I really dont think they can justify having you pay for the tools they need to make repairs on the car they sell (and would need to buy on their own anyways because this is a common repair that WILL come up for other customers). I would do a report to the BBB and take the car somewhere else
Ok...I think you are off here. This is NOT a common repair...LOL. He broke it himself and this would never happen otherwise.

But...with that said...yeah...the need to accommodate this engine being pulled...since it also exists in the G80 Sport...and probably in the new G90 and GV80. They need to buy the "table" regardless.

Wow. Made me sick reading that. Can't imagine how you must feel.

It may be worth a shot to talk to the people doing the work rather than the lady on the phone. Maybe get some details on this table and just exactly what's needed. Might be something you can (like you said I think) rent and have brought it for significantly cheaper. I know when I talk to my local dealership I end up telling them what's covered under warranty and what's not. Meaning some people are just script monkeys and aren't very useful to talk to.

A bit apprehensive on trying to transport it various places. Might turn into a shit show that leads you right back to the dealership again, except now you've paid even more. Tough call.

i do understand that; maybe my wording was wrong. My thinking is that there are several reasons a turbo would need to be removed from the car (broken stud or not). In my last car I cooked the oil in my turbo which needed a manifold and full turbo replacement and that wasnt caused by something I did to the car.

Am I reading it wrong? It sounds like no matter if he did the damage or not the dealership needs to buy this table just to do any sort of turbo removal on our cars because of the need to remove the engine

Wow, what a mess! Huge note to self and others. Don't try to Saturday morning garage a new car and if you do and break something, be prepared to open your wallet to get it fixed. I can't blame dealer for wanting you to pay for your error. As for the table, not sure they can legally do that but I can see them charging you some kind of fee for the headaches involved.

I still don't get why folks monkey around with add-ons and other things to new cars.

Yes I agree. You made it sound like his specific breakage is common.

Damn dude. No sense in rubbing his face in shit when he's already standing in a huge pile of it. ;)

I feel for you. I think multiple posters have made some good suggestions and have good ideas.
Also agree that a dealer should bear the cost of the equipment for repairs--a portion of that "cost" is paid for by each customer because the cost of a repair is based, in part, on the overhead costs for the dealer; but the dealer shouldn't expect to recoup all of their out-of-pocket equipment costs on the first repair they do--absent the equipment cost being a non-recurring one and, does not seem like this is a non-recurring cost.
Keep us posted and hope one of the ideas turns into something that works out.

Unless you're taking that table home with you, in no way imaginable is it your responsibility to pay for it. They're a Genesis dealer; it's on them to have their shop ready to handle Genesis vehicles. If they can't pull a Genesis engine, then they need to take down the Genesis sign. I would definitely take that portion of the bill up with Hyundai corporate.
(Besides, I have a hard time believing that the V6 with turbo is that much heaver than a G8BE (5.0 V8) used in the G80 and G90).

Also want to say, man I know that sick feeling you must be feeling. Glad to see no one is taking the "Well, you should have..." road; stuff like this hurts and we have all been there to some degree. A few years ago I broke a pin off a brand-new, $1000 CPU. Not nearly as costly to recover from as this, but it certainly smote at the time. Good luck man, can't wait to see when this is wrapped up and you are enjoying your car again.

Agreed completely.

Just got off the phone with Genesis Customer Care and explained to them what's going.

She was nice, gave me a case number, and said she'll follow up, but it might take a couple days. Not sure if I can depend on them to do anything, though..

Debating on getting things in order to just pull the turbo myself. My anxiety and stress is getting the best of me, though, so it's hard to think clearly right now.

Genesis customer care can be a little slow; hopefully not in this case. As for pulling it yourself, kudos to you if you have the skills to do that (I certainly don't). If it were me, I would consider looking for a non-Genesis mechanic that specialized in modified cars.

You know how it's cool these days to take advice from internet strangers (it's really not)? ;)

Though I've never done anything at this magnitude of cost, I do know that the one thing that has helped me when I do screw something up and have to right the wrong is to completely and totally step away from it and regroup for a bit. Even if time is a factor. You run a terrible risk of just making things worse if you start to bulldog your way through something like this. I used to make it a habit of making things worse until I started to step away, ignore it, then reassess.

Could also help to write all your options down on paper with costs included. Can help with clarity.

If you have another car to use and you're not getting charged for parking the car at your Genesis dealer, take your time in making your decision. There's no reason that table should be your cost/problem and corporate should highlight (to the dealer) that dealers need to have the equipment to repair all issues for the cars they service. Ford had a similar issue when they moved to aluminum construction on their trucks. Whole new set of tools required by every shop that wanted to work on F-150's, but they couldn't just charge the first owner that walked in needing repair.

If you do decide to DIY it (or if a 3rd party shop pulls the engine), you do also have some interesting options as far as installing upgrades (ie bigger turbos and your downpipes). Either way, I'm sure something will work out for you. Keep your head up bud

This--I would step away for a bit. That gives you time to think about it a bit more; Genesis corporate a bit of time to possibly assist; and the local dealer a bit of time to figure out that they need to invest in equipment if they are going to represent themselves as a dealer.
And, in the interim, if it helps to feel like you are doing something, call local mechanic shops to do some interviewing of possible alternate solution (seeing if a local person can help out).

Personally, I'd try and do it myself. Get some ramps and take your time removing the interferences. We know it can be done without removing the engine.

It might be difficult without a lift, but if you can get access to one, even better.

If too daunting, find a good, private, performance shop (preferably one that does Asian tuner cars) and see if they can help.

Heck, even if you paid a couple of those Stinger guys including travel, it would cost you a fraction of that ridiculous $10k.

Also, do file a complaint with corporate on the unscrupulous dealership activities trying to get you to pay for special tools which they need anyway in order to be a full service, certified maintenance facility for Genesis.

No way should you have to buy them tools. If you do you own it! and you can resell it (for a small loss I'm sure).

I'd find a speed shop just as you did. Anyone can buy a part from the dealer. Labor is always the most expensive part so you want someone that can be efficient.

I spoke with the head service department lady again, she told me she was still working on finding a way to get this table/bench, also spoke about renting it. I asked her if I would have to pay for it, to which she replied "no."

That, in and of itself makes me feel a lot better. Looks like it will cost between 5k-6k for the repair. Even so, she said they still aren't sure exactly how to go about everything. She said that they won't do anything without my permission, first.

She told me she spoke to Genesis Corporate, or rather, they called her. I can't help but assume her change of tone was due to that phone call..? I also told her I'm considering doing it myself. She said to just let her know.

Either way, it still seems like doing it myself may be the way to go. But, I might need to take a look at it first and really soak it in and see if I am competent enough to do it.

The the turbo upgrade the better option on this case rather than replacing the stock turbo if it comes down to it?

At this point, no, not for me. There are reports of transmission problems associated with a bigger turbo upgrade.

I really just want it fixed and be done with it. Almost want to just get rid of the car right now to be honest because this is such a ridiculous ordeal.
