  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Any of you have a headliner/sunroof noise issue?

I have been following this thread for a few months now to see if anyone was actually able to find the solution to this issue. Based on what I'm reading, we are dealing with multiple noise issues (e.g. popping, rattles) coming from different areas. Furthermore, some people are having this noise issue during hot days or cold days. For me, I was having this popping noise coming from my sun visor area during a hot day. Whenever I drive over uneven road, I would hear this "popping noise" coming from both the passenger and driver side of the vehicle. I would also be able to recreate this noise by pushing up my sun visor area. But once the car is in the shade or it cools down, I wouldn't hear this noise anymore.

I brought in my vehicle for service last week to get this looked at while getting my second scheduled maintenance. I didn't have much hope on dealership to fix this issue because it's hard to reproduce unless the weather is hot or it's a sunny day. When I got my car back, the dealership told me they were able to look after this matter because they were aware of this issue. Here are some details I got from my service report:

Cause - Insufficient clearance between sheet metal and headliner
Correction - Removed head lining and insulated the area believed to be causing the creak.

Now, I have yet to hear this noise after getting it serviced. However, the weather here hasn't been that hot lately which might also be the reason why I haven't heard any noise. I will try to stay hopeful and think the issue has been resolved for now...

I know many of you are having similar if not same issue as me. Since everyone has been contributing to this thread, I thought I should do the same. Good luck to all of you and I'll try to give everyone an update if I hear the noise again!

Now, on to getting my steering wheel noise fixed. Yay?
Thanks, that does sound very similar. Please let us know if it remains fixed on hotter days. It's encouraging (in a way) that your dealer was aware of the issue. What dealer did you go to? (in case I need to put my dealership in contact with a service department that knows about this and may have a fix).

I went to Mississauga Hyundai service center (Ontario, Canada) to get this looked at. I think most members here on this forum are from U.S. though...

Thanks so much. I hope the popping sound stays fixed. Good luck with your other issue.

They removed your headliner? I think the most they could do would be loosen a portion of it and add insulation, which could also be an adhesive, from a tube, or a solid or foam type for manual insertion. If you have details please add.

Merci

Unfortunately, my vehicle was with the dealership for 3 days so I don't know what they did exactly. That's just the explanation I received on my service report.

I'm sure what they did was, they loosened a portion of the headliner to place extra insulation. I wish I had pictures I could share...

This sounds similar to the first attempt my dealership did to try and fix the issue. They installed some type of "service kit". I'll pull out my first service attempt and post a pic soon.

This is a known problem and affects the G80 going back to the 2015. My 2015 has the rattle and I agree is the clearance between the headliner and sunroof panel. I believe it is the liner and sunroof metal rim/pan. In the pictures below, the overhead light console if I apply slight pressure to the plastic or on the lights the sound goes away. Same if I fully retract the sunroof shade and put pressure on where the pan and lip of the liner meet. Press down while the retractable sunroof shade is open and the sound will go away, release the slight pressure applied and the sound comes back. You can even feel the slight movement when you put pressure on the metal lip (see the arrows in the pics). Something there is rubbing or contacting which i believe is the issue. By them using the kit or adding insulation I believe it buffers the space and stops the contact when the car is moving or going over slight to rough road which is when you here the noise.

I posted a few months back of having the same issue... Genesis dvp north (Markham, ON Canada) replaced my entire moon roof. Upon return the sound did go away BUT NOW it has come back and is even worse!! Before it only occurred when roof on tilt over bumpy roads now it rattles at a near frequent rate. I know Genesis has tried but this is not good enough.. I am due for service at the moment so I am going to have to address this again. Honestly I don't t think they know what to do or how to fix this so I am not sure what my next course of action is going to be but I am definitely not going to accept this. This drives me crazzzzzyyy and I am so focused on it now which makes it even worse.. I can see the dealer did not like up the glass panel flush as well plus they scratched the roof. 😡 I will post a pic of this shortly... If there is a solution please do share folks... Love this vehicle but this is turning the entire cake sour.

I wonder why they would put a beautiful and probably not cheap headliner in and then cheap out on securing it properly? Honestly, what could the cost have been to put in some better quality clips? a nickel per car? Even if they sell one million of them around the world, that's only $50,000.... obviously not even an afterthought for such a huge company...

I guess it is possible that the Alcantara headliner is heavier than a traditional headliner so the installation is stressing the normal clips they use and they didn't even realize it would be an issue...
This is what happened with the Takata airbag inflator recall.. They fully well knew using a cheaper type gas could be hazardous but wanted to save about 3 cents per inflator.. Not until there were serious injuries and deaths was this brought to light.. Now look at Takata..lives lost, couple hundred injuries later, law suits, millions lost and now bankrupt... But of course the greed blinded all logic at the time.. So to answer your question,,yes if they can get away with it. They will pinch any penny they can

It's frustrating that Genesis has known about this issue since at least 2015. They most definitely can resolve it quickly at the factory but that mean money to fund the engineering required plus possibly an increase in production costs. So they choose to do nothing except attempt band-aid fixes when and if a customer brings their vehicle in for service to address it. If enough owners complain & protest, the pressure might be enough. Maybe!

I completed a J.D. Powers owners survey last month. I should have gone into deeper detail about this issue. Not sure what, if anything, it would have done, but nonetheless, the more we, as owners, speak up, the louder our voice becomes.

Sunroof hater here.
It's the reason I did not buy my 2015 lease return. That and the NVH at idle with the AC running.
I cannot understand how, with all the negative customer reactions, that Genesis is still delivering 100% of their cars for southern US markets with a sunroof. You have to drive one without a sunroof to discover what is being given up in terms of extreme annoyance.

Tdefrees,

Any updates on your headliner replacement?

Tdefrees,

Any updates on your headliner replacement?
Great timing! Good news and a sigh of relief..but not what many want to hear. The replacing of my headliner has seemed to resolve my issue. I have more testing to do on warmer days next week, and only a couple spots need cleaning. I had a great talk with the shop supervisor and advise that I was a picky person because I kept my car clean on a weekly basis. This is the ivory interior with ivory carpet. A monumental task to remove most of the interior in my opinion.

Today - I received the call was done and I thanked the shop. I decided to pick-up the car over valet because I wanted to look it over with all the work that was done. The new headliner was perfect, nice job to my shop at Genesis of Louisville, Oxmoor. But, there were a few areas of shop floor smudge on the carpets, seats, and rear window suede. The shop supervisor Steve was gracious and cleaned all the spots I pointed out. I could tell they did not cover the floor carpet while they worked inside the car, a bit disappointing there. The carpet under the seats is very dirty, something I'll clean at a later date. It's out of view right now, but my mind knows it's there.

I had spoken with the shop supervisor regarding the repair, and it was very costly to them as the headliner replacement process from the factory was not as designed by their repair guide from Genesis. The suede headliner is very stiff and cannot be creased. The took out all the interior pieces as the guide showed then, but the headliner would not fit through the opening and they had to damage the old one to get it out. So here it is........they had to have a glass guy come in to remove the front windshield in order to insert the new headliner.....

He informed me the Genesis reimburses their warranty work, but only at the hourly rates prescribed in the manuals of repair. They were several hours and a glass repair over that. Time they may not get reimbursed.

For the great news - The noise is gone and I have my 3.3t power back! My dealership did a great job with the repair in my opinion for being their first major newer model Genesis and will use my repair for future knowledge. Yay for being a training tool. Being a first year model for the US, I understand there can be small issues that need repair and corrections for future models. This in reality was a small issue....but required a major repair. I still love my G70 and would buy another.

I hope my experience and story help others a hope some of you mechanical geniuses find a way to fix the issue without a headliner replacement. I'll keep updating as the weeks pass to ensure the repair has resolved the issue. Happy motoring all!20190906_175543.webp20190906_175518.webp20190906_175510.webp20190906_175455.webp20190906_175432.webp

I have the same issue. So only solution would be to replace the entire headliner? I rather just deal with it. It's a lease anyway...

Hey tdfrees. Good to see that they manage to get the thing replaced without wrecking the car. Hopefully come warm weather the rattle stays gone. I spoke to my dealer today and was told that the rattle is coming from the adhesive rubbing against some clips (or something) and that they are waiting on parts that will supposedly fix it. Anticipated to be done by around Tuesday. Will keep everyone updated.

Honestly, I really think that an entire headliner replacement shouldn't be necessary to deal with such a small noise.

My dealer originally tried the factory "fix", some orderable repair kit. We thought it fixed it, but the popping became louder when the temperature outside was higher. I do hope it fix everyone else's issue and you don't have to go through what I did.
