  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Just got my oil changed at dealership. I checked oil after they change it and the tip of the dipstick is missing. Is the plastic tip prone to failure? If so what damage is it going to do to the engine if it remains inside? Can it be picked up by the pump or impede the pump from functioning properly? Will the crank shaft pull it into the engine and pulverize it into small pieces that will wreak havoc? They said they would replace the dipstick and drop the pan to look for it. Has anyone else seen this happen?

I agree with dropping the pan and getting that tip out. That said, the screen on the oil pickup should keep it from getting pulled into the pump. Unless you flip your car, the tip and the crankshaft should never meet.

Yes I agree have them drop the pan to remove it. The screen on the sump will prevent it from entering the oil pump. I think it will be ok to run it until they fix it for you. Have it done sooner than later is my opion.

There was another member that lost his tip as well. I'm now careful with mine to let the cable type shaft spin as it is pushed into place since it seems to want to rotate.

Thanks for your replies. it has about 4500 miles since it happened. The dealership was aware but failed to inform me until I asked.

It shouldn't cause any damage, if it makes it into the pump the next stop is the filter anyways. Anywhere else it goes will hold an impromptu "will it blend? Yes!" Youtube feature.

Same thing happened to mine. I haven't noticed any problems with mine, it's been about 15k miles now. Just ordered a new dipstick from dealership and replaced it. I assumed it just flowed out during the next oil change.

I probably will just buy a newer dipstick from a 2017+ G80 5.0 since the early dipsticks seem to be defective before my tip break as well. Hopefully, the newer models got an updated oil dip stick that corrects this issue.

For the OP, the tip should not be an issue in the oil pan due to the screen mesh on the oil pick-up. However, it would decrease the oil flow a bit if it does block the oil pickup when the oil pump pulls in oil for the engine. Hopefully the oil pickup is large enough not to be affected enough to matter.

Did the dealer break your old one?

No. I am proactive. I will just buy a new one before the old tip breaks. I do my own oil changes, so I use my dipstick often. I would not like having a piece of plastic blocking my oil pickup if i can avoid it.

Yes very good idea . I am going to replace mine as well. Thanks for the info.

Do you do all your own work on your Genesis car guy
The reason why I asked I wanted to do plugs in my 5.0. I am a heavy truck/equipment tech, build Cummins 15.0 LITER I S X engines and things of that nature . But when it comes to these new cars I find myself breaking the plastic stuff like clips and electrical plugs. I want to replace my plugs but was not sure how much of a PITA they would be to do? I have been taking my car to dealer for stuff. I really dont like someone else working on my car, if you know what I mean?

I understand. I will do my own spark plugs and transmission filter change before 100k miles. I like knowing that a job is done correctly as I like it so I do it myself when possible.

Most of my work has been on my 2006 Cadillac Escalade AWD. It has about 227k miles and I have changed the oil pump, timing chain, nearly all the engine gaskets, etc.

No problem. I rather spend about $20 on a dipstick than pulling the oil pan to dig out the tip due to my OCD issue I will have with the tip floating in the oil pan.

I purchased the 2015 C P O in april and have the Hyundai extended warranty. Well that being said I want to change out plugs and service trans. I realize these things dont need to be done as per service recommendations, but I like to start off FRESH. That is just the way I am. SA tells how I am wasting my $! But whatever that's how I do things.

I am the same way. My OCD cost me too much$ sometimes!!

The spark plugs look easy enough to do. The trans is a little different than what I'm used to I will figure it out. Can't be any harder than a 4000 series Allison.
You will have to change the entire plastic transmission pan to change the filter since the filter and pan are one unit. However, it seems simple enough like the spark plugs.
