Run-flat technology has really changed and they now many provide a ride pretty similar to normal tires. I have them on mine and they are fine, granted I have air suspension, but have also driven loaner non-air X5s and 540is with them and the ride was fine.

In the last three years? That’s when I traded in my Mercedes. Don’t they always have a much stiffer sidewall that enables them to run flat and thus always have a harsher ride?

Not saying it’s untrue, I just found them awful.

I'm not sure there were any significant changes in that recent period. A lot also depends on the vehicle's suspension and the tires you are using. The side walls are stiffer which would provide a harsher ride but that still could be an excellent ride since it is a matter of degree.

Thanks. Rather than run-flats I'm thinking they provide a repair kit with the goop and compressor since I haven't seen run-flats mentioned anywhere.

This makes sense, because I saw the tires and they were Michelin primacy tour a/s, and I don't think they come in a run-flat's. I'll try to mention/post only certain things from now on. Apologies for faulty informatin/guesstimations.

No need to apologize at all. You were just making a guess and not stating anything as fact so you weren't wrong.

Good on Genesis to stay away from run flats. Lexus started moving to them with their LS and it destroyed the ride of that barge (not helped by the poor inconsistent suspension tuning). I find it funny how badge suckers are quick to point at Genesis products as being derivative of Germans when the LS is more Germanic in its approach than anything from Genesis, but with much more of the negative aspects from the German vehicles.

Hate run flats. Hard ride and expensive. Rather have the goop / inflation kit by far. I'd probably change run flats to non RFT and get a goop kit (oh...I've already done that with my last Mercedes....) Glad the GV80 has normal tires.

They call it "Smart Power Tailgate", if you stay near the trunk for 3-4 seconds with your key, trunk will automatically open up -- only works when the vehicle is locked -- and this feature can be turned on/off. This comes standard btw.

When you say mobility kit I have a vision of one of the motorized scooter hanging off the back. Load up the flat tire and scoot off to the tire shop for repair. I've installed a couple of scooter lifts in cars so yes, it would work.

think this works when it's unlocked or locked. Should be the same as Hyundai tech which opens either way....

Not so, at least in the G80, and I believe others as well. Trunk opens on its own only if the car is locked. Bummer for me, so I have it disabled.

A compact spare is a simple solution for most who can lift a wheel.
When was the last time someone had a repair that was not repairable in a car with only a mobility kit while you were away from home. (If it is in my drive then the inconvenience is negligible). A compact spare is a simple solution for most who can lift a wheel.

Depends on the situation. You do get roadside assistance for a few years so you can call for someone to come lift the spare for you. That takes time so a kit can be a faster, easier alternative.

When I cut a sidewall though, a kit would be of no value. Took about half hour for the guy to show up on a rainy cold night. Put on the donut and got me home.

Last time I needed assistance, I didn't need either. Trunk was loaded on a trip so I had the guy pump it up and drove a few miles to have it repaired.

Gashed sidewall was 2013 about 20 miles from home, flat was 2018 about 600 miles from home. I can recall at least two other tire repairs before that but I did not have to change them as they were slow leaks I could drive to a repair shop.

I put this is this thread or another one yesterday. I blew out the sidewall on my wife's Q5 the day before Thanksgiving this year. I hit a pot hole on a highway about 15 miles from NYC (South Bronx). I was in the passing lane going 70 or so. Had to get over to the right side (3 lanes). I was on a curve (bridge). Called AAA adn they sent a sub contractor who was able to get me on flatbed and dropped me off at a gas station that 'sold' tires. It took them over 2 hours to go buy the right size and it wasn't even for an SUV. Cost me 250 and then I had to go buy the right tire. Nightmare. I had a donut that they could have installed, but they claimed I would never be able to get to NYC and then 2 hours back to CT on it.

I've gone through 4 sidewall slashed (on purpose during an ugly time when my wife left the insurance agency she worked at and started her own). Yes, the owner had our tires constantly slashed through sidewalls so we had to buy new (glad we had the full tire replacement through Audi). First and only car that was worth getting it for. Sorry for the long diatribe, but this is why I get so concerned about not having a spare. With my MS, I can't change a tire now anyways, but I alway shave AA premium as well as the roadside from Jag and Audi. Genesis will have the same I assume.

I'm with you. I want a spare. If not included I'd pay extra for it but there should be a space for it. Stuff happens and I still take the occasional long trip where a cut sidewall would be a problem. Yeah, its rare but has happened.

My last flat was 6 years ago, picked up what looked like a rivet in the tread. We driving back to Colorado from PA where our daughter had her wedding and were on the PA turnpike about two hours into our trip. I changed to the spare at a service plaza but unfortunately our car was packed with a bunch of stuff from the wedding. We had to make more room for the flat tire in the trunk so packed more into the back seat and my wife had to hold the wedding dress as we drove. The tire shop at the first exit wasn't really interested in plugging it and said they would order us a new one but it wouldn't be in for a couple of days. Needless to say we didn't stay there and got back on the turnpike and the next exit had a Walmart. They plugged it and the tire was fine for rest of its life.
