  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Any of you have a headliner/sunroof noise issue?

From reading your older posts I know you’re convinced it’s the sealant causing your noise. Hopefully your tshirt up there does the job once it warms up. It’s just ridiculous how many different issues we are all having with these sunroofs. I too rarely use mine and wish we could option it out. Either way I still love the car.

Yup, love the car otherwise. Does your sound correlate with the heat at all?

Considering its been between 35F-60F since I bought the car, I cant say heat has anything to do with it. Once it started making the tacky velcro sound it just continued in any condition. I think after cycling the sunshade a handful of times is when it started acting up.

Do you have a 2019 or 2020? Seems most issues have been with 2019s but could also mean not enough 2020s on this forum yet so we don’t know how affected 2020s are? My 2020 have noticed nothing yet. Temps in my area have been from 35 to 75. Not holding my breath though that the factory did something different on 2020 models.

I expect my headliner popping noise to return in the coming weeks/months as we get warmer weather here in NH. When it does I'll have to do some digging. At least I have lots of old T-shirts on hand, haha.

I have a 2020 model year. I doubt much is different from 2019 to 2020 either.

Thanks. As soon as Texas summers kick in good I’ll probably be fighting the same issue. Keeping fingers crossed Genesis or their supplier made a change for the better somewhere in the headliner.

I'm in Texas, mine is crackling each time I drive it after it's been parked awhile. I guess if I can't get the crackle and pops from the exhaust, I'm getting them elsewhere. Lol

Last weekend we got lucky and got 70 degree weather and lots of sun briefly. I noticed that in the sun, the sunroof area, above where the passenger's head would be, had a metal on metal popping/sliding noise when I hit even the slightest road imperfection. Sometimes it would happen on a perfectly smooth portion of road. I opened the sunshade, put my fingers on the sunroof glass, and felt a vibration every time I heard the noise, as if a rock was hitting the glass. Has anyone here experienced that? I checked, and the felt tape I placed by the “foot” of the sliding mechanism is still there. The noise went away after sunset.

Old t-shirt is an extremely versatile tool. Still, I'm glad kirk provided another option to try and fix it if the noise comes back with the warm weather.

Genesis has a letter out to the dealerships on the issue. My 2018 G80 was repaired at no charge. The first repair was a cleaning and lubricating. When the noise came back they found a defective part that was replaced.

Do you know what exactly they replaced to resolve the issue?

I wonder which of the noise issues it fixed; the sunroof rattle or the temperature dependent popping/crackling (which seems like more of a headliner issue)?

I got tired of seeing the white foam up there and wanted to make the whole "fix" a bit more bearable. 1/2" thick, black neoprene, a pair of scissors, measuring tape and its a lot less noticeable. Good enough for now. Car is quiet and I can stop obsessing haha.

About how far into and under the headliner are you going? For example, all the way to the grab handle / window area, or more like an inch or two from the initial placement?

A little diagram to help whoever else may want to do this. It’s not 100% accurate, but it gives you a good guide line for precutting the pieces. The 1/4” strip in front of the foam blocks probably isn’t necessary, but I still added them for good measure. Also something I forgot to mention, loosening the two screws of the passenger grab handle just a little bit will help quiet the noise as well.

Thanks. May give it a shot.

As the weather in Chicago has been in the 60's and 70's the last couple of days, I'm noticing that when the sunroof glass is a little warm or hot from the sun, there is a popping noise (like a big raindrop hitting the sunroof glass) that happens every 20 seconds to 1 minute. It goes away on a 60 degree day after 10 mins of driving, as the wind cools the sunroof, but is persistent at temps of 70 or above. Often, at the very beginning of the drive the popping is accompanied by consistent rattling, much like you see in the Stinger videos, though not quite as loud. Sounds like metal on metal.

The felt tape fix I found on the Stinger forum, and @mrcleeaan 's fix no longer working, though it worked for winter temps.

When the glass is cool, it is perfectly stable, no movement, no noises. When hot, one quarter of the whole glass on the front passenger side corner has a little bit of give, and you can faintly hear a sound when pressing on it from the outside. Pushing the glass up from the inside yields the same movement, and little bit of sound. The movement is probably under 1mm. I tried adding more felt tape to the area @mrcleeaan and Stinger owners mentioned, and that did not help.

Other observations:

  1. The noise does not seem to go away when the sunroof is open a little, or even half way, but only when fully open, leading me to believe the problem likely isn't at the very front of the glass.
  2. The noise goes away after it has rained, even if the sunroof is still warm/hot.
  3. This is definitely NOT headliner related.
  4. All seals and anything resembling rubber on the sunroof have been lubed with Shin-Etsu.
  5. There is TONS of good white lithium grease on all of the metal.
Curious if you guys have any ideas, or experienced substantially similar noises/conditions. Any help would be appreciated. Especially if any Texas (or other hot state) owners had a similar noise and fixed it , I'm very curious about what ended up working.

Don’t want to jinx myself, but temps in DFW today were mid 80’s or more and thus far my 2020 G70 has remained quite. When it’s hot I keep the sunroof popped open most all the time. Leave it that way even in my garage. No noises today on the drive home from work. Keeping my fingers crossed. I also noticed from the factory the sunroof mechanism and rubber seals were lubed up pretty good. That lube will start to dry or disapate to some degree over time so not sure what differences that may make?

@AdriaticBlueG70

Sorry to hear that. Mine was quiet until I tilted the sunroof open and it must have moved my foam tape a bit, which caused the rattle to come back. I added new foam tape and noise is gone.
