  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Long term reliability of HTRAC AWD transfer case due to inability to change the transfer case fluid?

Was told by my service department there is a fill and drain on front and rear diff and transfer case. At 36K 120 to drain and fill the rear but for 399 they would do front and rear diff and transfer case drain and fill. Most expensive is the fluid they said and said it was easy. Thoughts? When the time comes do it all? The manual calls for rear diff fluid change with LSD. Inspect transfer case didnt see a front diff recommendation. Want to make sure they know what they are talking about do I need the forum pros who own them. Thanks
If you plan to keep the car then IMO, its money well spent. That is the same price I was quoted for my rear diff oil change. Like I said the old oil in my rear diff was nasty . That was about 32k on the oil.

Bought the car so great advice thank you. Any idea on letting them drain and fill the front diff and transfer case?

That I can not help with. However the transfer case has to be removed to be serviced if I am not mistaken. Unless the dealer has some tricks up there sleeve. I do know the riffs should be easy to do. Not to sure about the front diff. I have rwd. If you do a search on this forum you may find your answer. Good luck with your new ride.. 👍

It would be interesting to know if there is a way the dealer can get into the transfer case without dismantling the unit. It would be great if you could ask them to show you if possible when they change the transfer case oil. Would benefit us all.

Regarding the front differential, it is pretty straight forward in the 2.0T. Drain plug and fill plugs are easily accessible. I did gravity feed the front diff from the engine bay. Loads of room on the 2.0. Not sure if the 3.3 is the same.

It will be quite a bit before I can ask the dealer to show me I'm at 1800 miles but I definitely will share should they be nice enough to show me how or provide the tech docs which I'd upload.

Hi everyone- new to the forum but have relevant information to the topic. I bought my 2018 Genesis 3.3t sport HTRAC with 13,625 miles on June 27th and it had the AWD dash icon come on after a week of of ownership. Took it to Genesis and they determined the Transfer Case Assembly needs to be replaced. This was July 3rd, they ordered it... just got off the phone with them for status update today July 20th and the part still hasn't come in yet, I couldn't get an ETA. I just crossed 14k miles, so if this is a part that has the ability to fail at so few miles, I worry for the long term ownership. Hopefully this is something that may have been addressed in 2020 models and the new part will reflect that, so I'll update when it comes in and is replaced.

Please keep us updated and thanks for sharing. One of my concerns is part availability on these

Hey everyone... so after a month and a half of no contact I called the dealer today and left a message with the service advisor from my invoice and my invoice # on July 3rd saying, um... where's the part? Whats the status? It's been a month and a half already??

Got a call back 20 minutes later saying how sorry they were about the lack of communication, and asked me to bring back the car because there is a "firmware" type fix that could fix my issue. :/

So long story short, never ordered the part, never called me to state this update fix, not sure when the update came out or what was discussed, but they asked me to bring it as soon as I can and leave it with them for about 1.5 hours and after testing with the update and test drive, if it doesn't fix it (they're pretty sure it will) THEN they will order the part, so I'm heading up Saturday morning. It's about 60 miles each way so I'll update then. Wish me luck, smh.

No Joy... got there at 10am, left at almost 2pm and not fixed. They said that tech line was closed on weekends and they will have a discussion with them on early this week and I'll have an answer by end of week the lastest on how they'll proceed, he gave me his direct cell and card to call him directly if I don't hear anything. They said it is possibly not the transfer case hardware itself, but the ecu computer portion that controls it, so the computer may need to be replaced.

When I told him the 1st visit was determined that the transfer case should be replaced, he mentioned that Genesis doesn't like to just "replace" that hardware. He did say another Genesis came in in the past with the issue and had it replaced and it never came back, but this may have been before what they thought could fix the issue without replacing the hardware came out, who knows. He tried his best to explain, but you could clearly see he was just the messenger. Anyway I'm going to give it until Wednesday EOB to hear from Genesis with the Tech Line results. If I don't hear anything by then I'm calling him 1st thing Thursday morning. Essentially the car seems like it's operating as a RWD when I give it some gas.

Mine is a 5.0 RWD but when I purchased the car new it had a slight clunking noise under light acceleration coming from the back end. On the test drive my service advisor heard it. They gave me a g70 loaner and three days later the said that they can't find anything wrong with it. I took it to a highly rated independent mechanic and he found a very slow leak in my rear differential. Back to Genesis as it's still under warranty and I tell them I want the rear differential seal replaced and the oil drained and filled. They call me the next day and said they found a bolt in the rear differential that was stripped and they were going to replace the whole rear differential. 5 days later I picked up the car and the clunking was gone!

funny enough I have that clunking sound too when going slow, they should have heard that on the test driving they did while working on it I would assume. For all I know they are telling all this to tech line, I hope so.

Unfortunately they didn't find the issue until the rear differential was opened up

I interpret that to mean that Hyundai/Genesis gave the dealership quite a bit of grief over the repair recommendation and warranty reimbursement. Try the cheap fix first and hope for the best. It’s a logical method of managing warranty costs to offset the length of the factory warranty.

I took a peak at the transfer case, it looks like you have to get the exhaust bracket/hanger out of the way, just 2 bolts on each pipe and 3 bolts at the transfer case, all easy to get to. The fill plug is rearward facing and seams to be easy to get at. The manual says it takes .67 liter of shell TF 0879 B. . I have a liter of Ravenol J1C1125 coming which is a direct replacement and from what I have seen is the preferred juice among Porsche, BWM and VW owners that have AWD and the same active transfer case as the HTRAC unit. I'm having some slipping/grabbing feelings under some accelerating situations, mostly at operating temp, smooth when cold. I'll take some pics when I do the fluid change, hope I can siphon all the juice out, and I hope it the new stuff smooths things out, I had an 05 Chevy Astro AWD with a similar issue and new juice cured it.
