  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Long term reliability of HTRAC AWD transfer case due to inability to change the transfer case fluid?

This is my first time posting, but I figured I’d give some credit where it’s due to @Acpantera for kickstarting this whole thing! Kudos, good sir!

Just did the TC fluid swap on my 2018 G80 Sport. Was experiencing the dreaded shudder and I could tell the power just wasn’t getting to the wheels, and it was hugely noticeable in stop/go traffic.

Took me 45 minutes, exactly as laid out in post 81. Extracted 450ml of old fluid, put back 450ml before it started to dribble from the fill hole.

IMMEDIATE results in any driving mode. The power is there, no slips, super smooth and even the slight vibration I had over 110kph is gone. If you’re on the fence, but you have this shuddering and power delivery issue, do this.

Below is the ooze I pulled out, and the sweet honey I put back in.
I did the same thing about 1k miles ago also in a 2018 Genesis G80 sport AWD, and I also replaced the front and rear differential fluid and transmission fluid as well, no more harsh shifts when the transmission is cold!
This is my TC fluid

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
I have 2015 Genesis 3.8 HTRAC with about 85k miles on it. I had some rough shifting in lower gears, took the car to the dealership and they ended up replacing the AWD transfer case under warranty. I do have the extended warranty. Glad it got replaced. Hopefully it’ll have a much longer lifespan now.

Just curious, would that not have been replaced under the standard 10 year drivetrain warranty, or did you need the extended warranty to pay for that?

I’d expect it should be replaced under the drivetrain warranty - mine was. I had some other services done that were covered under my extended warranty at that same time. I just mentioned it because there seems to be a LOT of variances between dealerships.

Update: Just performed the transfer case fluid drain & fill that @Acpantera laid out on post #80/81... The result was immediate and quite noticeable - is driving veryyy smooth now!

I don't have the ability or set up to do this myself, but found a local transmission shop that was willing to help if I could source fluids. I ordered the Ravenol DTF-1 fluid from Blauparts - it was reasonably priced and arrived within two weeks of ordering, would definitely order from them again.

Technician said fluid that they pulled out was very dark and was obviously past is life. Said that they have seen the TC fail/shudder same way previously in BMW and Porches at their shop, so not surprised it happens with Genesis if also built on the Magna platform.

Really unfortunate they don't make this part serviceable or with a drain plug to make things a little easier at least, as it seemingly continues to be an issue through all Genesis models (mine is a 2015 v8 5.0L).

Before I purchased my 2017 G90, I saw on the carfax that the transfer case was replaced recently.. I asked the tech directly about and they did confirm its not all that uncommon for between 50-60k. I have family members that had a similar experience with BMW. But one thing I know for sure, would be a hell of a lot cheaper to replace on the G90 than my Jag F-pace with the SC 3.5L that I got out of lol.

The one I had was the 380 HP V6. Ride as a daily was brutal. Infotainment was horrible. But, if handled well for not just an SUV, but it handled well period. Build quality inside was also horrible, rattled and cheap.... though, they have improved this from 2022 onward. For the SVR, 100k new or 70k lightly used.... not how I would personally spend my money

View attachment 32527remove the triangular bracket, 17mm socket for the three, 14mm socket for the two lower.View attachment 32528once thats off, remove the plug with a 14mm allen.View attachment 32529fish the tube in as deep as possible, I got out just shy of 450ml.View attachment 32530Very EZ job, test drove and was extremely happy that my jerky acceleration disappeared. The manual says it takes 670ml and i replaced less than 500ml. Im going to be changing the engine oil in about 500 miles, so i think im going to repeat the process just for the halibut.
So, don't any one tell ya that the transfer case oil can't be changed in a G80 sport with HTRAC.
How do you get it back in? Pump in the new fluid? And if so, how does it not spill out?
