  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Proximity Card Key?

Regarding the hard key, this may sound a little cheesy but can't I take the hard key out of my key fob and simply keep that on my key ring? It's small and lightweight compared to the key fob itself, but it does have a large head on it.

I'm assuming the key that goes with the electronic fob is a physical key that goes on your key ring.

I am curious about that as well?

I am not understanding your question.

the Smart card has its own physical key that stores inside the smart card, you don't have to have it cut, you can leave it as a blank and carry the key from your regular fob if you want.

to me it defeats the purpose. I have no keys and have no desire to carry keys. My house is all smart locks, the car is smart locks, everything is keyless. but I guess if you have to carry keys then it isn't a big deal.

You have it correct, I do carry keys and will continue to do so.

I was not aware the physical key designed for the card fit inside the card, I thought it just came with the card as a physical key to be on a key ring.

Thanks for the info Mr Incredible. I carry keys and have been trying to get away from keys. I am not well educated on these matters . 👍

damn first time I've pulled that key out in a year, man is it dirty.. yuck

Fyi there a number of aftermarket key fob replacement options availible for significantly less (over a hundred $) than dealer prices which include programming instructions, clearly a profit center for the dealer.

@Mr. Incredible How do you lock / unlock the car with the smart key? Do the smart key have physical lock/unlock buttons?

@Vpops Can you post some links to the aftermarket key fob replacement options?

the smart key stays in your wallet/pocket and is sensed by the vehicle as you approach, to lock/unlock you use the button on the outside door handle.

there is a physical key for emergency entry to door or trunk if battery dies. I also remove it and lock the glove box when handing it to a valet.

Did you get your card from the dealership or a third party seller? Here is Maryland it took me calling 9 dealerships before I got one that even knew about the card for 15/16 Genesis and only one said that they could program the card.
Hey man! Which dealer in Maryland did you use? Having the same problem and would love to get my key card working.

Two questions please:

How thick is the key card?
How much did the dealer charge to program it?

Thanks.

Looks like the card key is $67 and the blank key insert is $6. Dealer charged $150 to reprogram the card and required all the key fobs to do the job, but they were unable to cut my key blank apparently because there wasn't enough for the machine to grip to do the cut. I'm planning on calling a couple other dealers in the area to see if they can cut the blank but haven't bothered yet.

Hyundai Parts Deal is where I got mine (same link as above).

$150 to program the key? Nuts.

So basically the same price. Doesn’t seem any more unreasonable than a regular key fob to me. I’ve thought about getting one, and still might, but I’m not sure where to put it when I’m home since it won’t hang on our key rack and I don’t know that keeping it in a wallet where it can flex is such a good idea.
I keep mine in my wallet all the time unless I go on vacation.

$150 is downright criminal....

I can't seem to find out the exact dimensions of the card. It takes coin type batteries, so it can't be THAT thin. Just want to make sure I can place it in my (non-RFID) wallet.

I think some have said it's about as thick as three credit cards.

Oh. That's not bad.

THANKS!

Sure beats the monster key fob in the pocket. My former Infiniti M35 had a modest key fob in comparison.

I found a smart card for $66 online, but don't want to sell a kidney to get it programmed.

I ordered one on the 19th... Says it should ship out on the 27th.

I'm in the same boat, yes the fob is huge by comparison. Yes my G37 and QX50 fobs are skinny in comparison.

Let me know if you find a good deal. I need to call my DFW area dealers to see what they can do for me.

Here's what I found: https://www.hyundaipartsdeal.com/accessories/hyundai-card_key.html?vin=&make=Hyundai&model=Genesis G80&year=2018&submodel=&extra1=&extra2=&filter=()&partNumbers=B1064-ADU01

They're holding my car hostage while replacing the water pump (under warranty) and so I'll ask them about the cost of the card reprogram and key cutting cost - I should get it back tomorrow. (I live in the DC area...)

On the BRIGHT side, the dealership valet hooked me up with a new G70 3.3T loaner. Sweet ride; super fast, but still prefer my G80.

Any thoughts on tires? The dealership said my tires are loud (Michelin MXM4's w/24k miles on them) and was considering the Continental ExtremeContact DWS06s. I have them on my Infiniti with no complaints. (I tend to drive in a more relaxed mode - don't really crank it around corners, etc.)

I run The Continentals Extreme Contacts. DWS 06. I find them to handle well and they are quiet.
