  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Genesis G70 Reviews

From the MT overview of the new TLX as one of the contenders for CotY, mentioning the G70.

Great, but the new 2021 TLX can't overcome its issues of efficiency or performance of intended function. When we crowned the Genesis G70 our 2019 Car of the Year, the car wowed us with its remarkable balance—here's a small sedan that's engaging to drive but still has a good ride and premium feel.

The Acura doesn't inspire the same praise from our staff. The TLX confidently splits a couple well-stocked segments of smartly equipped luxury sport sedans, and we appreciate the TLX 2.0T for what it is—a good premium option with sporty styling and value but without the chops to back up its looks.

Well said and I agree. It's pretty good but not great. The car felt big, which is odd considering I just got out of my G70 3.3T and into a 2.0T.. Really surprising to me that a 4cyl model is heavier than my 3.3T... The SH-AWD does a good job making the car feel sporty but the question is why the extra and unnecessary wizardry to make a car feel similar to the way it would if it was a RWD based platform? Just make it RWD based for god sakes! Same with the double wish bone suspension. They wanted great handling but the cost was less interior space and more weight because the car is so big now. No one cares about double wishbone in this segment... The car also looks and feels really long.

It's not like the car is bad...It's good...and it looks great.. but it just seems like Acura went out of their way to make a car that pretends to be something else.. Like they were to stubborn to take the tried and tested blueprint for a car in this class and had to be different.

why?

The double wishbone suspension isn't the reason the car dimensions are huge without the interior space to back it up. A lot of midsize RWD sedans are actually double wishbone suspensions, like the new and previous gen G80 and the BMW 5 Series.

Lipstick on a pig (literally for the TLX).

With the new TLX, Acura tried to give it RWD proportions (longer hood, etc.) in addition to trying to make it handle more like a RWD sedan, but what they ended up with was a bloated sedan that still doesn't quite handle like a RWD sports sedan, and despite its midsize dimensions, has less room at the rear than the German compacts.

So why drive all that weight/size?

Just go for a German or the G70?

For those that want copious amount of space and don't care about driving dynamics, they'll just get the ES.

The Sonata N-Line and K5 GT are a good bit faster than the TLX and despite the absence of an LSD and AWD, seem to be pretty fun on the switchbacks according to the reviews.

Only thing going for the TLX is that some of the interior bits are nicer, but can actually carry taller adults/teens in the back seat of the Koreans (the N-Line also has tech that the 2.0T TLX doesn't get).

Anyhow, Charlie stated that he should be dropping his review of the FL G70 sometime (our time) this Sunday.

^ yeah, exactly. the TLX exterior dimensions don't match the interior capacity, so the size isn't justified. it is 5-series sized and weighted, but 3 series or less inside. makes no sense. plus it has all that weight hanging over its FWD-biased snout.

the G70 has tight rear leg/foot room, as we know, but this is more justified given the compact overall dimensions and much less weight than the TLX 2.0T...by several hundred lbs.

Not going to bother with that one. a) it's from Motor Trend, who already seems to have a built-in bias against the brand. b) I know the review is going to suck, well, just because we all know that the dealer experience (generally) isn't top notch.

You nailed it!

a new comparo review - all on paper - between the TSX and G70:

never heard of this guy and he's off base on several points. he even thinks the base TLX is "sportier" than the G70. i did not expect that. the TLX is heavy and hangs a bunch of that bulk over the front axle. i understand it does hide that imbalance well with its chassis tuning, but i'd have to drive it to believe it out handles the G70.

I drove the TSX A-Spec and while a good car, the G70 is simply better. The A-Spec 4 pot is pretty much the same price as my AWD 3.3T with less features. What really surprised me the most was that the TLX felt heavier and was heavier with a 4cyl.. Not good.

The Type-S is going to cost a fair bit more.. just not worth it.

^ yeah, the TLX 2.0T is actually heavier than the BMW 530i - both over 4000lbs. it's a big car with the porkiness to match which is unusual for a Honda product. seems tailored to the NA market unlike the original TSX which was a compact and sporty ride from the global market (actually, it was the honda accord elsewhere around the globe).

^ yeah i saw the AT awards recently as well. kinda surprised the G70 hung on to those two awards considering it is now a 3 year old model. i guess the overall factors at play and metrics that AT uses are different than typical auto mag or auto reviewer scoring criteria. they take a more holistic approach and look at a big picture, which clearly the G70 still holds up very well with. AT seems to love Genesis products in general, can't fault them for that!

clipped from the AT awards list:

  • Best Overall Car - Genesis G70
  • Best 3-Row Luxury SUV - Genesis GV80
  • Best Compact Luxury Car – Genesis G70
  • Best Large Luxury Car – Genesis G90

^ 3 Kias and a Hyundai also won an award.

Can't say that I disagree with Mari's critiques.
