Oil light on

I own a 2010 V6 and I've noticed that my oil light comes on when I first start the car in the mornings and or if i let the car sit for a few hrs. It stays on for 1 or 2 seconds when I start it up. When the engine is warm it doesn't come on. Has anyone else encountered this problem or is it normal? My oil is full too.

Are you sure this isn't the "bulb test", like in the old days, when you'd first turn the ignition on, but not yet crank? All the indicator lights came on, which was part of the design to show you that the lamps worked. I'd assume there's something like this today, considering that you no longer "turn on" the ignition, you basically tell the car to start by pushing the button, and it powers the ignition and cranks.

Also, remember that the engine DOESN'T have significant pressure until it is either cranked for a few moments, or has fired. Most lights come on at about 5-7psi, so it may well be that this is normal.

Yes.....the lights come on not for a bulb check, but a system check to make sure all is well. If the light doesn't come on upon startup, then something is wrong.

Based on the OP statement that "When the engine is warm it [light] doesn't come on" it sounds like there may be delay in ramping up to normal oil pressure when the car starts cold. I haven't noticed such a delay on my Genesis, but I haven't been looking closely at the instrument panel for it either. I also use Mobil 1 Synthetic, which could make somewhat of a difference (synthetic flows better at cold temps), especially if the car is parked in really cold weather.

Mark, I like your attention to detail. I too have not paid close attention on my instrumentation panel for the oil light but I will certainly keep an eye on it. I also use Mobil 1 so perhaps it does have something to do with the properties of synthetic oil.

itsjustmatt23: Can you get a good reading on your oil level following the service manual to the letter? Engine hot, shut engine off, wait 5 minutes and check that level at that point?

My oil reading is just above the F mark like everyone else here. I think the oil light I was worried about is actually the test because the other lights on the dash TPS and others lights up as well when I start it up and go away after 1-2 seconds. Boy do I feel like and idiot. lol
