As alluded to in other posts, I let my G70 go. There are a couple reasons why...
First, the treatment I received at my local Genesis dealership after dealing with a broken turbo flange stud (due to my failed attempt at installing primary DP's). Their sheer incompetence, and attempting to charge me for tools, I ended up repairing it on my own by replacing the entire passenger side turbo with a brand new OEM part directly from Genesis. Despite using all new hardware and gaskets, and following each step as outlined in the FSM, Genesis - at the discretion of my dealership - revoked my full warranty down to a sort of partial warranty. The explanation that the Genesis rep gave to me didn't make much sense, nor did the reasoning; but, simply put, other than cutting down the length of the warranty to that of a 2nd owner/transfer warranty, they also told me they would have to have special authorization to complete
any warranty work in the future.
After completing my repair of my G70, I decided to give my dealership one more chance by seeing if they could do my first complimentary service on the car. After calling the service manager, she explained to me that my current warranty doesn't cover complimentary oil changes/services; but, ultimately decided to 'go the extra mile' and allow complimentary services for one year. Irritated, I eventually figured I would just go for it and let them at least change my oil for free. After getting my car back, I spoke with the tech who drove my car back to my house. He was a pleasant guy, so I chatted him up about cars, and eventually about
mods. He reinforced what the dealership had told me prior to this - ANY modifications and they will void my warranty. Anyway, later on, I decided to inspect their work and noticed a significantly overtorqued drain plug to the point where the washer was completely deformed and I was surprised the threads weren't stripped in the block. Also, the oil filter cartridge was crossthreaded and leaking.
By this time I had spent months going back and forth with my dealership, and Genesis corporate about my warranty - and to top it all off it was clear that my dealer was absolutely inept at performing even routine maintenance. I had completely lost trust in Genesis and my dealership.
Fast forward to a couple weeks ago, when doing my 10,000 mile oil change I noticed leaking fluid at the bottom of my bellhousing. Prior to this, I had seen increasing reports of leaking in this area both on the G70 and the
Stinger, either being attributed to a rear main seal leak, or a leak from the transmission side. When I saw that my car shared this same leak, I could only assume that my car had one or the other of those two aforementioned problems. Whichever it was didn't matter, as the diagnosis would require the same work - the engine and transmission would have to be removed from the car, and separated to inspect the interior of the bellhousing.
Considering my experience with my local dealership I knew that I would be taking a substantial risk to bring it to them for repair. First, there would be a significant chance that they wouldn't repair it under warranty, considering how much frustration I went through with them in the past which ended up with me losing my full warranty. Second, even
if they went ahead with the repair (whether under warranty or if I paid out of pocket) how could I trust them to complete the job properly? How could I be sure they wouldn't screw something else up, and weasel their way out of any responsibility? How would my resale value look if my car had new problems after a "repair" by my incompetent dealership?
It was clear to me that if I wanted my car fixed, I'd most likely have to be up for a fight. My state only has one dealership, located in the center of the state. The other dealership that is close to me is the one that I had problems with (Genesis of Vancouver, WA). So, if I wanted any chance of a repair being done right, I'd have to drive 4hrs away from home, then find a way back, and hope and pray that Genesis would honor the mistake of THEIR poor quality control during the assembly line. No seal should be leaking on a new car with only 10,000 miles on it.
I decided to remove all my modifications in preparation to bring it to that dealership... But, by the time I had everything removed I realized something. I didn't love my car anymore. In fact, I hated it. All I saw in my car was the reminder of how poorly Genesis USA has treated me, along with my local dealership. All I could see were the shortcomings of my car, all the things I wanted it to be but it clearly wasn't. After spending the last 1.5 years of using most of my free time on my car, instead of with the short time I'm able to see my wife each week, and ending up with this icon of frustration to show for it - I realized that, for me, this isn't worth it.
Maybe the farther away dealership could properly repair my car. Maybe even Genesis would honor it as a warranty service. Maybe everything would be fine. But, considering my experience up to that point I decided it wasn't worth it. It wasn't worth the anxiety, stress, and strain on me or my family, no matter what the outcome. I decided that it would be better to sell the car as soon as possible.
So that's what I did. I sold my car to a local dealership. I figured a dealership would have the resources and warranty to repair the leak in the bellhousing. Whomever buys the car next should have the comfort and reassurance that their dealership can fix what's wrong if it ends up causing any problems without having to pay for it. If I were to sell it privately, there would be no guarantee of that; but, by selling it to a dealer (non-genesis), there would be a surety of some form of warranty for the next buyer.
As for me, I lost a lot of money; but, I gained a lot of relief.
I want to say that I have truly appreciated everyone on this forum. I like the people here, and I feel that I consider myself to have very similar interests and values as most members here. I'll probably stick around for a little while, both to see what is going on in the Genesis world, and also to sell all of my
aftermarket parts.
