  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

SRS Winged Airbag Installation (Pictures)

Hard to know for sure, but I took a close look at the inflator and it looks perfectly symetric, I highly doubt inverting it makes a difference in the way it deploys.

On the plus side, the advanatage in the way I installed it is that at no time did I have to disconnect the airbag (other than the ground), that's why I didn't feel I needed to disconnect the car battery. Once the cover was separated form the inflator, I simply reattached it to the new cover.

I should note though, that the eBay unit seems to be slighly lighter in color than the original cover, not so you'd notice in most lighting conditions, but more obvious in direct sunlght. Wonder if you noticed the same thing.

One consideration of selling your inflator on E-bay. You are shipping a type classified gas generator. If it goes by air and accidentally deploys in the shipping carton a fire could result. Additionally the propellant is Azide based and could cause a toxicity hazard. You are regulated by FEDERAL law regarding the shipping of the inflator alone much more so than if the inflator is inside the airbag, even then there are regulations to observe. CAUTION legal and financial concerns should arise.

I did notice it at first on installation. In fact, the inversion of the inflator combined with that fact has motivated me to consider buying one (with inflator) from KDM. Right now, I'm fairly happy and comfortable enough to keep as is.

I purchased my winged airbag from Ebay. I didn't have a T40 torx bit but I was able to get by with either a size 5 or 6 metric allen/hex key. I too had to rotate the inflator 180 degree but don't worry, the fit is perfect. Since I had to replace the inflator from the orignal to the new unit, I didn't have to remove the two clips on the inflator. My Genesis almost looks complete now. Air bag, done. Trunk badge, done. Wheel caps, done. Next is to get the windows tinted.

Agreed, the eBay unit was an easy swap. On an added note, the slightly lighter color that I noticed when I first installed mine is a thing of the past. I picked up some McGuire's leather cleaner for my seats & wiped the airbag cover with the rag. One wipe was all it took, it's been over a month and it has maintained it's darker shade.

Just out of curiousity, what does the dealer charge for the replacement?

hey guys quick question.. If I say sell my airbag first and then drive around with no airbag for 2 weeks until the new unit comes in..

obviously my SRS airbag light on the dash will come up BUT will it turn off when I install the new unit or will it have to be reprogrammed or something?

It is recommended to disconnect the battery when removing and installing the SRS Airbag.

It is not advised or recommended to drive around with any part of the steering wheel assembly disconnected or not installed. Don't sell or disconnect you airbag without a replacement. Its only a couple of weeks so just wait for it. The UPS man will be at your door before you know it.

when they say Beige airbag, does it really mean beige interior, so that airbag is really gray?

The "beige" one is more like a brown one. It matches the cashmere interior of my white Genesis.

I was wondering about the same thing.
I have cashmere interior, and the steering wheel leather/airbag is grey, not beige or brown.
So it does match, huh?

Yes it is the exact same color as the OEM one. I'd take a picture but I haven't installed mine yet :-).

The airbag in the pictures is black.

Well folks, I've done it! I partially stripped one of the screws for the airbag unit. I will be heaeding to Harbor Freight to pick up an extention ...hopefully this will work. If not, any suggestions???

Problem fixed. Went to Harbor Freight and picked up a torx set with the handle and popped it loose. Change took all of 10 minutes, excluding the time to allow discharge of the airbag.

It looks dank right?
