Hi everyone. Newbie here with a new 2022 GV80, Alta White - Prestige. I'm a big car guy and couldn't wait to get this SUV. Took a while but finally got it the last week of December. Being here in the Motor City, you grow up loving cars and everything about them. I have had everything from BMW, Audi and Cadillacs the last 15 years. Just got out of 2020 CT6 w/ Super Cruise. Very impressed w/ what Caddy has done in the last 6 years. But.....Genesis takes their vehicles to a whole new level. It's pretty darn perfect. Few little quirks to talk about but overall they are on to something big here. Here's my PROs & CONs:
PRO's:
- Styling is over the top. Hand wash your car and you'll see the attention to detail, the curves and unique lines they have on this vehicle. All the seams line up perfectly. The attention to detail in the lights and their placement are noticeable. The grill and front are going to be Genesis's calling card. You'll be able to spot it a mile away.
- Technology and interface are awesome. There's multiple ways to do the same tasks inside the vehicle. Very easy to learn the interface and access all the rich features they put into this SUV. It's intuitive, easy to customize the interface etc. The fact you that you can customize the dash, colors, themes is another bonus.
- Interior is spacious and comfortable to sit in for long trips. The choice of materials are superior to most luxury cars in this price range. The Nappa leather, soft leather dash, plush top interior and the hand stitching are just great touches that sets this vehicle from others in it's class. Love the fact that it analyzes your body size and it chooses a custom seating configuration for you. It has made a big difference for me while driving.
- Ride is smooth and customizable. Love that you can customize everything and drive in different modes. Haven't really lit it up and put it sports mode to see how the torque and acceleration are. Can't wait to really open it up once I get it settled in. I'm thinking about a thousand miles right now.
- Media interface is fast to connect. It picks up where you left off when streaming. Love the nature sounds when I want to just disconnect. Try the rainfall when it's totally sunny out there! Sounds weird but it's worth trying. Wireless charging works perfectly. Genesis is using a high end fast QI charger and not a cheap 5Watt charger. It's super fast to charge your phone. Speaker system just rocks. I'm a big audiophile and I'm more than impressed how well my music sounds.
- Voice recognition is just as good as Siri and Echo devices. It hasn't failed me once in the last 3 weeks. I'm so impressed how intuitive it is and how it can find just about anything through natural speech. In past vehicles, it's been the achilles heal of luxury cars. My caddy was awful and I barely used it. I use the GV80 speech recognition all the time. I try to trip it up but it's spot on and knows what I'm asking. Way to go Genesis on a real natural speech recognition that actually works!
- The little touches. I'll try to hit on some of the more unique Genesis touches that you won't see on other cars:
- Blind-spot View is a great touch and it shows on the left and right side.
- Customizable buttons. Just brilliant. Makes it unique to the driver
- Passenger talk. Great if you have a 3rd row and little kids but still pretty cool feature
- Surround-view camera. So many to park your car
- Remote self-parking assistant.
- Remote forward and backward feature on the key fob. Another brilliant idea.
- Massaging front seats w/ multiple settings
- Power-adjustable second-row seats.
- Digital NFC Key card
- Adjustable back seats
- Adjustable Heating and Cooling zones for your seats. Love that you can put less in one area and more in another area
- 3D Cluster and customizable
- Self learning cruise control is just brilliant. Learns your style of driving. Doesn't assume every driver uses cruise the same way
- Lane assist is almost like a self driving vehicle
- Navigation system is better than Google maps and Waze now. I don't really bother with Android Auto anymore
- the little triangular window on the driver and passenger side is a nice nostalgic blast from the past
- Dual exhaust and the trim on the back are sexy. Really makes the car pop from the back. Even the exhaust pipes themselves are designed to fit in there. It's not like they just stuck some fancy trim around stock round exhausts
- Soft close doors. Can't live without them now
- Homelink is very advance and has features showing if your garage door is going up for down. Nice touch
- Connected app and digital key are fantastic. Use them all the time now.
- I could go on and on
CON's: (again this is just me and I know some of it is just nit-picking)
- Lot of chrome on the outside. Just a personal preference for me
- badging in the back could have been done a little differently. I'm thinking of de-badging or doing some white dipping to give a little extra customization
- Locking system could have been a little less restrictive. The passenger doors should be able to unlock the car
- Center console turn dial is a little finicky. You have to really pay attention to not go up, down, left or right by accident. I think it's gorgeous and fits in the frame of the luxury build but it's trying to do too much. It needs to be raised a but so you can handle it better. I like the fact it's multi-functional but the mechanics of it could be improved. I like the fact you can write on it etc.
- Phone interface. Unless I'm missing something, where's the simple dialpad when you press the phone button. It just shows me my history.
- Gas mileage has not been good. Averaging around 15MPG city. Haven't really gone long distance anywhere yet. I'm filling 93 octane since I got it
- No massaging seats for the passenger. That should be automatic in a vehicle like this.
- The really little announces:
- Outside temp is on the main driver cluster. Should be on main 14" screen as well
- Automatic engine idle stop is on the left side of the driver. Wish it was near the Auto Brake and shifter
- Climate control LED screen should be able to display other items as well
- Center driver cluster should have a little more customization options
- Same with the driver cluster RPM and Speedometer. Those are just fancy LCD screens. Genesis should have different themes and options. Other manufacturers have been doing this for a while now
- With all the features available in setup it would nice if you could do it from the Genesis app. That way you get to see all the options from your phone or tablet
- I know this will change but Genesis really needs to have their own showrooms and service centers. Right now the majority of the dealerships are tied in with Hyundai. The same manager/rep/service person does both.
- My dealership told me they don't have the concierge system working well. No loaner cars and no pickup or drop off. I'm hoping that is temporally but it just cheapens the brand when you're trying to compete w/ the big luxury boys
So there you go folks. There's my detailed analysis after a few weeks of ownership. I can't be more proud to own this car. Been having a lot of fun with it. I want to give a shout out to
KDM warehouse. They have some really cool stuff that I ended up buying for my GV80 that made it even more special. The inside door inserts should be a must on all Genesis cars and SUVs. I ended up getting a large center tray from Amazon that fits perfectly inside the console. Just gives you a lot of extra room to access your stuff without having to dig deep into the console. Here's some pics of some of the accessories mentioned. I posted my GV80's full pics in the Picture thread earlier today.
I'll defiantly be posting more as I learn more about the vehicle and helping new owners out as well.
Cheers and be safe out there!
Eric
